THE BASICS

▷ Growing up Danny hated his name. Not Pink – though he certainly received his fair share of teasing – but his first name, his real first name.. Rupert. And so he decided at the age of twelve that when he grew up he was going to change it. ▷ All through his childhood he had this reoccurring dream about becoming his toy soldier – Dan the Solider Man – and keeping the whole world safe without ever having to use his gun. So it was no surprise on his eighteenth birthday when he legally changed his name to Danny and enlisted in the army. He did a lot of good during his time as a soldier, but there’s a lot about his time serving he regrets as well. He still keeps his toy soldier to remind him he’s got promises to keep. ▷  Founded the Coal Hill Cadets not long after being hired. While he has his own issues with the politics of war, he does believe there’s a moral dimension to modern day soldiery and hopes to help instill those values in his students And if can prevent even one of them from becoming a general, even better. ▷ Danny is basically an open book – he prides himself on his honesty and character – except when it comes to his family. Maybe it’s that he’s a bit more reserved, or simply values his privacy, but he’s certainly mastered the art of vague answers whenever the topic is broached. ▷ Suffers from a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease.

THE RELATIONSHIPS

◀ THE DOCTOR: To say Danny’s relationship with The Doctor is prickly would be a definite understatement. The Doctor calls Danny PE – all out refusing to acknowledge his position as a maths teacher (apparently in The Doctor’s world soldiers cannot teach maths). And Danny doesn’t trust The Doctor as far as he can throw him. Anyone who walks around calling themselves The Doctor, refusing to provide a proper legal name definitely has a shady past, as far as he’s concerned. And Danny is determined to get to the bottom of it. For the safety of Coal Hill, of course. Or at least that’s what he tells himself. ◀ MARTHA JONES: Danny and Martha get on like two peas in a pod. They have a similar moral code and sense of humour. Martha doesn’t ask about his time in the military, and if he’s being honest he appreciates the reprieve. He’s moved on from that life. And he’s happy to have a friend who understands that. ◀ RIVER SONG: When Danny first met River he wasn’t sure how to take her. She’s an absolute flirt, and he is painfully shy. But she has so much exuberance and life he can’t help but sort of get swept up in it. It’s refreshing, after everything he’s seen. And while he still thinks she’s completely mad, he actually think she’s quite brilliant as well.   ◀ JOHN SMITH: Danny called John Adrian for the first month they worked together. Mainly because the two look so similar he had a hard time telling them apart. Though he’s since learned to tell their eccentricities (mainly John’s) apart. John pouted at first – not a fan of being seen as anything other than an original, but he now likes to think of them as friends. Even if Danny does roll his eyes every time John calls him Pinky Pink. ◀ CLARA OSWALD: Danny basically fancied Clara from the first moment he laid his eyes on her… which coincidentally is also the story of how he walked into the closed door of the teacher’s lounge and earned himself a black eye. Which is basically a metaphor for their relationship. Clara thinks he’s cute, and sweet if not a bit reserved. And Danny thinks she’s about the prettiest girl he’s ever accidentally turned down (yeah, that happened). They did go out for drinks once, and while it ended with the promise of another it was painfully awkward. Still, Danny thinks he might like to take her out again. If he can ever actually get the words out (preferably in the right order).

▷ His mum was never meant to be a mother, and his father left for Spain when he was about eight and never came back – so Mickey’s grandmother stepped in to fill the role of parental figure for him. He knows now how lucky he was to have her, but feels as though he took her for granted when he was growing up an harbors a lot of unresolved guilt for it. In fact, he still kind of blames herself for her death even thirteen years later, seeing as it was the tear in the carpet he’d failed to mend that had tripped her in the first place. ▷ Grew up in the same council estate as Rose, having probably spent more time in her flat than he did his own and carries a deep affection and respect for Jackie Tyler. ▷ Is tired of being seen as the ‘nice guy’ or good friend – he’s got all this strength and goodness inside, he just doesn’t know how to let it out. He’s scared to change for fear of rejection, but he knows he can’t stay stuck for much longer. He just wants to prove he’s not as useless as everyone thinks he is. ▷ Has basically been a mechanic his whole life. It’s the only good thing his father passed onto him. He’s got a keen eye and a quick mind – what it might take other hours to find he fixes in minutes. He supposes he could have a job anywhere, but he likes working at Coal Hill. There’s a security there – it almost feels like home. ▷ Has an irrational fear of store mannequins.

THE RELATIONSHIPS

◀ ROSE TYLER: Mickey has known Rose for as long as he can remember, and he’s probably had a crush on her for just as long. So it was no surprise when they starting dating in secondary school – he was even part of her bad wolf gang. However it was a surprise (to Mickey, at least) when Rose dumped him to start hanging out with John Smith. Or at least that’s how it felt to him at the time. But, history aside, these two have managed to maintain a sort of uneasy friendship. Try as he might, Mickey still sort of fancies Rose, despite the fact that she’s made it very clear she’s not interested, but at the end of the day there’s not much these two wouldn’t do for each other. ◀ JOHN AND JAMES SMITH: Mickey tolerates the Smith brothers (ofcoursehe’d have to share a late name with them). He resents them for breaking up him and Rose – even if deep down he knows it wasn’t really their fault. At the root of his issues with the Smith’s is jealousy, though he’d never admit it out loud. Not only are they smarter and more successful than him, they took away the one good thing he thought he had going for him. ◀ MARTHA JONES: Mickey kind of sort of has a total crush on Martha. And she kind of sort of thinks he’s charming, in his own way. But neither actually have the guts to say anything. Still, they’ve managed to bond over their feelings of frustration towards Rose and James – both having felt slighted by the duo. Maybe one day they’ll manage to find the courage to admit they totally fancy each other (even if it is against school regulations) but until then at least they’ve got someone who understands their woes. ◀ DANNY PINK: Mickey thinks Danny is pretty cool, for a maths teacher. Though that might have something to do with his time as a soldier. Mickey himself had always wanted to do something heroic like serve and protect his country, but he never found the nerve. But despite his personal hesitations about The Doctor, these two work pretty closely together. Just not by choice. Despite his eccentricities, however, Mickey knows The Doctor is good at his job. So while he might not be sure whether he likes the old caretaker or not, he definitely respects him.

THE BASICS

▷ Isn’t exactly qualified to counsel anyone, let alone young impressionable minds. It’s not that she’s a complete psychopath or anything (well, anymore)but rather that she hasn’t got the training. So what if she fibbed on her application? So long as Idris never discovers her little secret and the Doctor doesn’t rat her out, she should be in the clear. And anyway, how hard can it really be? They’re just children! ▷ Was part of the Timelords – a radical group responsible for several devastating terrorist attacks around Great Britain in the 80′s. Their goal had been peace, but when Miss realised no amount of preaching would ever change people she decided to change the game, ultimately leading her to betray her ideals and her best friend. What was left of the group after the Doctor was finished disbanded, many member finding a new cause to throw their anger into while Missy tried to atone for her mistakes. ▷ Kept an eye on the Doctor of the years, but has managed to keep her distance (and her efforts) a secret. And now that she’s back in his life she isgenuinely interested in reconnecting. She’s turned a new leaf… ish. Or at least she’s willing to try if it means winning her best friend back. ▷ That being said she hasn’t completely reformed. While she’s not outright evil, she does have a mean streak – that is a to say she gets a thrill from messing with people. In fact she credits that particular trait for her current employment (Idris can be just as cruel when she wants to be). Just because she’s given up her propensity for mass chaos doesn’t mean she’s opposed to starting drama among the staff. Watch out – any piece of information in Missy’s hands could be lethal. ▷ Has a collection of Victorian period costumes.

THE RELATIONSHIPS

◀ THE DOCTOR: They were more than friends, not quite lovers – but there was something between the two of them neither had ever managed to find with anyone else. Which is why Missy is so keen to reconnect. The Doctor on the other hand is understandably more hesitant, he’s had to hold the weight of their actions on his shoulders all these years alone. If Missy really wants to make amends and bridge the gap that’s only grown over the years she’ll have to prove she’s changed. In the meantime hopefully Missy won’t get bored and spill his secrets. ◀ CLARA OSWALD: The puppy. That’s what Missy calls her. Cute if you look at her from the right angle, always eager to please, but ultimately nothing more than a pet one keeps to ease the lonely nights. Missy wouldn’t say she’s threatened by Clara’s friendship with the Doctor – that would imply the puppy was her competition, and Missy knows what she and the Doctor share goes deeper than anyone at Coal Hill could possibly understand. Still, she’ll play nice…ish, for now…. Doctor’s orders. Not that it stops her from having a bit of fun at the puppy’s expense from time to time, it’s mostly harmless and anyway, what the Doctor doesn’t know… ◀ JOHN AND JAMES SMITH: Of course she remembers these snot nosed kids from back in the day. Always loud, always poking their noses where they didn’t belong, and annoyingly perceptive – just like their parents. Unlike the Doctor she doesn’t feel any sense of duty towards the brothers. Their parents died for what they believed in, and really what better fate could a pudding brain hope for. Besides, they’ve made nice lives for themselves, so as far as she’s concerned they’re on even footing. Not that she’s keen to oust her involvement – she’d much rather stay on the brother’s good side. ◀ MARTHA JONES: She sees a lot of potential in Martha. Well that is to say potential for Missy to exploit. So jealous of Rose. So infatuated with James. So easily manipulated. Or at least that’s what Missy’s counting on. She needs an ally in this school, and she thinks Martha might just be it. And Martha? She’s just happy to make a new friend, and hopes to bring her into their little circle. ◀ JACK HARKNESS: Keeping tabs on the Doctor has often meant keeping tabs on Jack as well, so naturally she knows a lot about him which she hopes will come in handy. Jack is loyal to a fault, and to no one more than the Doctor – which is why Missy knows he’s the key to making amends. If she can make him trust her, the Doctor shouldn’t be far behind. Unfortunately for Missy, Jack will not be easily swayed despite his charming demeanor.

THE BASICS

▷ Born in Leadworth, England to two very loving parents’, Rory’s childhood would often be described (most notably by himself) as boring. ▷ That is until primary school when he was introduced to Amelia Pond and John Smith. The trio had an almost instant connection, and while it took them some navigating to find their rhythm – for as long as any of them could remember it had been Amy and her boys. Though sometimes, Rory wished it had just been Rory and Amy.   ▷ Becoming a nurse had been the easiest decision of Rory’s life. He loved to help and heal - to see people through a difficult time in their life and to know he made some difference in every patient’s life - without the demands of being an actual physician. ▷ Came to work at Coal Hill at Amy’s suggestion – she thought it would be cool, the three of them working together and Rory couldn’t argue (no one ever argued with Amy), and it helped that the pay was significantly better. ▷ Dresses up as a Centurion every year for Halloween.

THE RELATIONSHIPS

◀ AMELIA POND:  Rory is Amy’s favourite guy. Her dude. Her Bro. And Rory, well he’s pretty much fancied her since the moment they first met. But he would never presume Amelia Pond might actually fancy him back. Amy on the other hand is too clueless to see that the reason Rory’s never so much as looked at another girl is because he’s been too busy staring at her. Or at least he had been, until he met Clara. Now whenever she see’s him with his new flatmate she can’t help the little tug of something – which she will certainly not admit is jealousy - she feels in the pit of her stomach. ◀ JOHN SMITH: Rory loves John, he does. Really they’re more brothers than friends. It’s just that sometimes Rory wonders what it might be like to live outside of John’s shadow. To have the girl he fancied – hell, to have any girl – look at him they way they do John. ◀ CLARA OSWALD: Clara met Rory on her first visit to the infirmary when she decidedly (and slightly embarrassingly) dubbed him Nina and the two have been good friends ever since. They share everything – from banter and private jokes to dating horror stories and cups of tea. And while Rory would never admit it out loud, he kind of loves Clara even more for not being part of his childhood clique, it’s nice to finally be appreciated outside of John’s shadow. Which is why when Clara’s flatmate bailed, he offered her the extra room in his. They’re pretty sure Idris frowns upon co-workers cohabitating, but figure so long as they don’t announce it in the school bulletin they should be fine. ◀ JAMES SMITH: As one of John’s oldest friends, Rory knows James fairly well. And while James may not fit into their their little group, Rory still considers the elder Smith a friend. Often they can be found on the sidelines enjoying (and often shaking their heads) at their friends’ shenanigans. ◀ RIVER SONG: If Amy is like her mother, Rory is without a doubt her father.
