James Cameron: “I’ll give them a villain everyone will hate!”
Unstable Avatar Fans: “I’ll love him forever”
So I have to talk about Recom Mansk.
He is alive and I won't be leaving my delusion until December. If they do not bring him back, we are being robbed of the coolest Recombinant out of the team, in my opinion(and to be honest, it sucks that they introduced such interesting characters visually and story-wise just to kill nearly all of them).
Mansk is the heavy gunner of the unit and he's got to be absolutely SHREDDED from carrying that massive gun around for almost the whole movie. He isn't seen without it until the team got their ikran and joined with CetOps. This means Mansk was climbing mountains and navigating the undergrowth with this gun and its ammo container, AND the nature of the military demands he can do this while running. In a deleted scene, we see Mansk running through the jungle canopy while holding his Hydra, keeping up with the light-arms team members.
His heavy gun is called the Recom Hydra machine gun. It has a very long rotating barrel with three "heads" which he props on a surface to fire the only time we see him use it, but we also see him swing it up and aim it at Quaritch when he startles the team by flying up on his ikran. I assume Mansk can also effectively use the Hydra while holding it, which makes a badass picture.
After bonding with his ikran, Mansk trades up the Hydra for a M-69 AR. I also assume he didn't bring back the Hydra while with CetOps due to the instability of ships on water. It's interesting to me that he still kept the long sleeves and pants while the other Recoms went sleeveless and cut their pants into shorts for more mobility. Presumably, the coverage protects Mansk from hot casings flying around when he uses the Hydra. Maybe he doesn't feel comfortable without it?
Mansk is not confirmed dead. The way he fell makes me believe that he was unconscious and went into the water, similar to Lyle. We already know Lyle will come back. But Mansk? I like to think he washed up on a beach somewhere and is either roughing it on his own or has been taken as a hostage by a Na'vi tribe. Since Kevin Dorman, epic actor that he is, is cast in Fire and Ash, I really hope we will see Mansk again. He's my favorite Recom for his unique style. While he only has one real line in the movie, he's still compelling to me. Overall, the Recoms have(had) so much potential and I hope we see the surviving ones come together as a team again.
And I really hope Eywa kicks their asses and/or leads them to freedom from being RDA assets.
So...the Ke'awa Kame'tire. It means "divided Kame'tire", which makes sense. On its own, that's all fine and dandy...
...however...I've noticed a few of the characters shorten it to just Ke'awa, and that....is kinda an issue 😅
See, the word for "divided" is not actually ke'awa, but rather ke'aw. The extra a at the end is added for grammar reasons. Adjectives in Na'vi can come on either side of the noun they describe, and to make it clear which noun they're attaching to, you add an a to "point at" the noun.
For example, if you want to describe a flower (syulang) as beautiful (lor), you can say lora syulang or syulang alor. The a is "pointing at" syulang to say hey, this is the noun that's "beautiful"! (on which point, grammatically speaking "divided Kame'tire" could also be worded as Kame'tire ake'aw). The meaning remains exactly the same regardless of which side you put the adjective on.
So shortening "Ke'awa Kame'tire" to just "Ke'awa" feels.....weird. Incomplete. It'd be like....hmm, what's a decent English example...let's say there was a group called, idk, the Hunters of Duskwood. Now imagine that it was shortened to "the Hunters-of" instead of just "the Hunters". Sounds kinda weird right? Like the "of" is just hanging there? That's how "Ke'awa" as a standalone sounds to me 😅 if you're gonna shorten the name by chopping off the Kame'tire part, that's fine, but it should be just "the Ke'aw" ("the divided"), not "the Ke'awa" 😅

This is my first/main save, Ne'atan. I can't describe every way that playing through this game for the first time deepened my love for Avatar, but a large part of it was finally being able to express myself in the unique way of playing as a truly Na'vi character. And if you like making more androgynous/"feminine-leaning" male characters like I do, I tried to show some tips for my process.
Aaaaand this is Ne'atan and his ikran Amputator now.

Small note on kuru vs. tswin: Both terms are listed as "neural queue" in the dictionary. However, the definition for tswin also includes the word "braid" while the definition for kuru does not. This has led some to speculate that kuru refers to the actual flesh-and-nerves organ while tswin refers to the braid of hair that encompasses it—so all Pandoran fauna, including Na'vi, have kuru, but only Na'vi have tswin. I like this theory and chose to reflect it on this chart; however, keep in mind that (as of the time of this post) this distinction is merely speculation/headcanon; it's very possible that the words are actually completely synonymous and interchangeable.
.
A few terms that didn't make it onto the chart for various reasons:
ta'leng - skin (wasn't sure how to label something that encompasses the entire body) snatxärem - skeleton (same reason as above) seyri - lip (wasn't enough space left on the face image) reypay - blood (wasn't sure how to represent it in the illustration)
.

Lyle? Nah, Ly'al!
I have wanted to do a Recom-coded playthrough of Frontiers of Pandora for a long time now. Modeling game characters after myself or fictional characters that I like is something like a hobby for me, from Skyrim to Sims - and now in my favorite game ever, I've brought my favorite Recom to the western side of Pandora. Sorry, Quaritch stans. Lyle Wainfleet has that "FTW" tattoo for a reason. I like to think it means "For the Win." Beyond using the in-game customization(limited but still good) to match my Sarentu's features as closely as I can to Lyle's, playing around with shadows and lighting in photo mode helps to highlight what makes them look similar. It is a fun little way to kill time, take cool pictures, or start a fresh playthrough.
There are lots of resources out there! 😸 When it comes to creating names, or transliterating existing ones like Lyle, the thing you'll probably want to look into most is alphabet and syllable structure. This video is a good introduction to the Na'vi alphabet, and the Horen (big reference document that compiles all currently known Na'vi grammar) has this flow chart for making valid syllables!
If the chart is a little confusing, don't worry; Karyu Olly also has this excellent beginner-friendly Name Guide that explains all of it with lots of examples!
And of course, if you're looking to learn more about the language, I have a bunch more nifty resources linked in this post, including dictionaries, video lessons, and workbooks! 😸
I find it deeply depressing that every adult in Spider's life had children, yet he was never anyone's priority. every adult he could and most likely attempted to match in to. the adults he remembered as the closest things he had to parents since birth (Jake and Norm, even if they weren't acting as his parents, because Spider, genuinely, would not know better). down to his actual foster family (the McCoskers). essentially went out of their way to de-prioritize him.
like I'm not faulting them for having kids, for having a family. but Spider was their first priority. he didn't need to be adopted by any of them, per say, but he was their responsibility. he was their orphan, Jake especially, considering he was the chief of his people, but Norm as well, seeing as he's a prominent figure head of the clan/Hellsgate.
the McCoskers took him in, but over the years, as they had their own children, he was more and more neglected. he was now no longer his actually appointed guardians priority. and that only gets worse and worse as he ages until they become outright abusive (Nash does anyway, cause thats what I'm gonna call violently kidnapping his, throwing him in a room and locking him there, and trying to kill all of them, him included, when they run away. as abuse. and I'll get back to the whole "you have to turn yourself in to the RDA" x2 speech from Jake in a second). they also didn't really accept his culture. with their resentment towards the Na'vi brewing, Spider most definitely faced some heat for being more of the forest than of humans, in terms of culture.
3 times over, Spider came first and was put last. put last by parents who know damn well how much love, time, care, and attention a child needs. who should be able to see when a kid is being neglected. who dialed to advocate and protect him from neglect (instead of calling him a stray).
he was a child and they were his advocates. all three parties failed in their duty as advocates, to protect Spider. to ensure he always had a loving home that made him their priority. that fulfilled all his needs, not just the physical ones. but all put their own families first, and abandoned Spider to the scraps of their love, time, and affection.
imagine being Spider, an orphan who can't even mention his birth parents and is always treated like he is the physical rebirth of his father's sins by half the people around him. every adult in your life has kids and seems like they're such a good parent. you watch their kids being loved and tended to and having a steady home. they receive love and affection constantly. but your fosters pay less and less attention to you as they have babies. and now your a stray to the man you look up to so much. and the man who probably taught you how to put an exopack on has less and less time for you. no one has time for you. you're no one's child. no one's priority. just a stray. a nuisance. and you don't truly belong anywhere.
no one was putting him first. children need to be someone's priority. psychology. they need it.
and then the RDA returns. the McCoskers leave, Spider is expected to leave everything he has ever known, to join the very people he hates and has been trying so hard since he could understand what it meant, to prove that he wasn't like them. Jake, the man he once looked up to, was telling him to leave. sending him away. stripping him of the little amount of family he could somewhatly claim, that being his siblings.
once again, Jake is his chief, should be looking out for him. not even as a father, per say, but as his duty to Spider as his chief. a chief should never be sending away his most vulnerable ward, a child he should consider his own (as all of his clans children should be one with his own children), to the opposing enemy force.
this happens again when they're running away, Jake tells him ever more directly to hide in the forest alone until the RDA stops shooting at everything that moves and then turn himself in so he can his own children could run. once again, putting him last, instead of protecting all of them.
then for a year, Spider has no family. no one. the McCoskers are gone and no one has stepped up to bat for him. he's 15/16 and alone. his the big sibling to the Sully's. those kids are all he has, but they aren't really looking out for him. he's looking out for them. cause he's the oldest. that's just how it is. he is one with the clan. lives with them. does chores. watches out for his siblings, the whole nine. but Jake isn't doing his duty of watching out for his ward. he is once again giving and giving and giving, and not receiving.
and then he is taken, he is taken, and while Jake may not have had the means to go back for Spider, or been able to take the risk of going back for him, he abandons him without a thought for his safety, and puts his children first. it's the language and attitude be poses towards the situation that is wild to me. he has every right to be worried about his children, but he could not spare Spider an ounce of concern, even knowing the danger he was in, and is more concerned about him spilling details then anything else. Spider is, once again, not his first, second, or even third priority. he is a means to an end. a necessary loss.
people only care about Spider when there's nothing else they can put before him.

As much as I love the idea of Quaritch invading only Jake's personal space.. Its even funnier to realize this man gives NO ONE personal space.
Quaritch 100% lives by the rule 'all space is my space' Would DEF be the type of man to claim a entire bench on the train with a wide sitting stance.
