silence falls over the apartment, kyungsoo busying himself with the book he’s picked up from the library. some sappy romance novel that he can’t pry his eyes from. the rain falls quietly in the night with the city quieting as the hour passes. the world is swallowed by the clouds that cry tonight and people find shelter in their homes. it isn’t until his little pup, who isn’t so little anymore crawls into his lap with a soft whimper of attention. it gathers kyungsoo’s attention and causes an airy chuckle to pass his lips. “are you hungry now?” he sets the book faced down on the page he’s left off on, scooping the little brown devil in his arms before giving it a kiss atop of it’s head. “i just gave you a snack a little while ago, coffee, you can’t keep eating otherwise you’ll get fat.” these days kyungsoo occupies himself with the little coffee shop he has (that’s finally started to gain popularity) and his little dog, coffee. it’s quiet nights like these that makes kyungsoo miss any form of attention-- thankfully coffee knows how to cure his heart and saves him from drowning in loneliness. the dog presses its wet nose against kyungsoo’s cheek and whimpers once more, tail wagging furiously in hopes to win over his owner’s heart. it’s hard for the owner to say no to such a face and soon enough, kyungsoo settles for finally setting dinner out for coffee. “alright mister, eat your fill and we’ll go to bed after.” while the little dog is eating, kyungsoo busies himself with getting ready for bed, having already taken a shower, he just brushes his teeth and changes into something warm. the winter air is finally settling in and he’s not about to fall into the same mistakes as everyone else and get sick. the cafe owner sits himself in front of the television while his dog finishes its meal, eyes glued to the new drama that’s airing every monday and tuesday nights. something about lost lovers who find themselves once again after revisiting the same spot they met over fifteen years ago. it makes kyungsoo laugh and cry, a roller coaster of emotions that pounds at the edge of his heart and begs to take hold of it. when the episode finishes, his attention turns to his dog after turning the television off. he notices that once again, coffee is sitting by the door, cuddling an old pair of sneakers that belongs to his makes way as he walks over to the door to lock it before bed. “i know love, i miss him too.” he picks up little coffee and holds him close, “but he’ll come home soon. it’s just a matter of time until he stops by to say hi again.” they both make way to the bedroom, the somber feeling dragging kyungsoo’s chest to the floor. “he’s just been really busy, is all, and i’ve been almost all to busy to notice too.” it’s a bitter lie that he speaks to coffee, not even sure if the little one understands anyways. he just says it to make even himself feel better despite thinking about his lover every waking second of the days, weeks, months-- years. “he’ll return soon, baby. we just need to be patient.” the lights are off, both of them sleeping on the side of the bed that’s been empty for months now. “good night, coffee. and sweet dreams.” kyungsoo hopes his dreams tonight doesn’t result in him waking up in tears once more.
