Okay but imagine a 4 year old Eli learning that Stiles’, aka his favorite daddy when he wants curly fries and chicken nuggets, name isn’t really Stiles. His little brain practically explodes because this changes everything. He could choose his own name and everyone will have to call him that! It’s the best thing anyone has ever told him. Well, second best, the first is being told that they could go to the store to buy more ice cream whenever they run out at home. But this! This! It’s almost first place! And because he’s still Derek’s kid, he spends an hour at the kitchen table, scowling with his brows furrowed, tiny feet kicking in the air, while thinking hard about what he wants to be called. He lets out a frustrated sigh when nothing good comes to mind and decides to get a juice box from the fridge, hoping that maybe something will sound good after.
He walks over to the refrigerator that’s covered in alphabet magnets and runs his fingers over the magnets that spell out Stiles name, mentally going over every letter just like his daddies taught him to. He goes on his tippy toes and reaches up to drag the name closer to his eye level, except that instead of pulling all the letters down, he only manages to get the ‘I’, ‘L’, and ‘E’ and as he reads the letters starting from the right out loud, it just hits him.
Eli.
That’s his name.
(Derek lets out a long suffering sigh whenever people ask how the nickname Eli came to be because there is just no way you could get that from his first, middle, or last name. Stiles, of course, loves it. Not only is his kid incredibly adorable, he’s also extremely talented. How many other kids can read backwards? That’s right, none.)

Stiles is on his back on hard-packed dirt. He's cold and there are leaves stuck to his neck and there's a four inch gash in his side that he thinks he can feel his ribs through. There's so much blood around him he feels like he's floating on a pond and everything is so much dimmer above him than it was a minute ago, which is saying something because he's in the dark center of the forest in the middle of the night. And the worst of it is that he's alone, totally alone with the smell of his own blood drowning him and the soft side of him run through by a tree.
