Out-take from a mini-rant in a gender studies assignment
“You have to tell her! You have to tell her! It’s your moral obligation, as a friend, as a woman, I think it’s a feminist issue!”
This is what Ross Geller, played by David Schwimmer, says in the episode “the one with the dozen lasagnas” from the first season of F.R.I.E.N.D.S when he finds out Paolo, the man Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) is currently dating, made a move on their common friend Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow). Of course he is just saying this so Rachel will dump Paolo so he, Ross, can make a move on her. I don’t like this quote – but I do think it’s an important one.
F.R.I.E.N.D.S is one of the most loved TV shows of all times, with all of its 10 seasons available on Netflix many of us, myself included, go back and re-watch it again and again. But that is not to say it doesn’t have its problems.
Set in the 90’s, its attitude towards many things are by now dated. Ross’s wife leaving him for a woman was considered a joke, as well as Chandler’s (Matthew Perry) stereotypically female interest (musicals, skincare, he is skilled at plucking eyebrows, etc.), making jokes about Chandler’s transgender “father” constantly referring to her as “he” and “dad” even though it’s pretty clear she presents as a woman, not to mention all the fat-jokes on Monica’s (Courtney Cox) expense. Yes F.R.I.EN.D.S is problematic, but nothing is more problematic than how it handles the relationship between Ross and Rachel.
It all began in the first ever episode. Rachel had ran away at the altar about to get married to a man she did not love, and Ross’s wife had just left him for a woman. When Ross sees Rachel he is reminded of his High School crush on her, and because of that decides to pursue that interest. The quote above happened when Phoebe revealed Rachel’s then-boyfriend had made a pass on her, and Ross decided feminism was a great tool for him to get what he wanted – Rachel. Remember, this is the show that gave us the “friend zone” (thank you Joey (Matt LeBlanc)).
All though out this TV series, this theme prevails – Ross wants Rachel and will do anything to get there with no consideration of her own wants or needs. Ross is the epitome of “entitlement”.
In season three, when Ross and Rachel had finally got together and has been dating for a while, the episode the one where Ross and Rachel take a break happened. Rachel is working at Bloomingdales, a nice clothing store in Manhattan, had has to work late because of a shipping crisis, thus missing Ross’s and her anniversary dinner. In a phone call to Ross she tells him she’s sorry, but she has no time to talk and needs to get back to work. Ross, thinking he knows best as usual, takes it upon himself to fix a dinner and bring it to Rachel. Unsurprisingly, she is far from thrilled. While taking phone calls from brands and shipping companies she tells Ross to leave and that she hasn’t got the time. Still thinking he knows best, Ross proceeds to light candles that eventually sets another employee’s sleeve on fire. When Rachel is mad at him later he is completely unsympathetic and stands by his actions, leading them to take a break. He, during this break, hooks up with another woman which is what eventually drives them to break up.
Even though they were on a break when Ross slept with the other woman, the show directs its focus on Ross and Rachel’s debate of if they were on a break or not rather than to highlight Ross’s problematic behavior that led to their break in the first place.
In later seasons we are shown how Ross does all in his power to sabotage Rachel’s future relationships, and when they get drunk and marry in Vegas, he refuses to annul the marriage simply because he doesn’t want three failed marriages on his ledger. He would rather disregard Rachel’s genuine pleas than the blow to his pride, his main argument being “who would want to date somebody with three failed marriages?”.
Fast forward to the end of the 10th season and the show finale, and this theme is still at large. Rachel has gotten the offer of a life-time – a well-paid job in Paris with one of the largest fashion houses. This is her dream. So what does Ross do? The selfish thing, of course. He chases her down at the airport just to beg her to stay for him, practically guilting her to stay. What is worse, the show treats this as romantic.
I selected this quote because it perfectly sums up this awful person that is Ross Geller, a man so entitled that he will do anything – even invoke a movement fighting for the liberation of women – to get what he wants. I’m not saying Phoebe should not tell Rachel, but that utilizing feminism for his own gain is wrong. No, it is not a quote I like, but it’s a quote I find important. Important because it shows exactly how non-feminist men will use feminism to get what they want, regardless of who it hurts.
Word-Vomiting
I’ve been in a giant writing slump this month (Goodbye to all my short lived new years revolutions) and I’ve been staring at a blank word document for an hour now, thinking WHY HAS MY BRAIN STOPPED WORKING. And I don’t know why this all of a sudden coming to me, but I think I haven’t written anything because I’ve been thinking too much. Really.
In my mind, I want solid characters and a solid plot before I even press any keys. I have a million story ideas but don’t write them because I don’t think there good enough, and force myself to wait until I have, what I think, is a good plot.
fuck that
I used to just open a laptop and start writing, no plot, no characters, barely a premise, and those were the stories I loved writing, and where all the words flowed naturally. So, I guess I just wanted to remind every one that you don’t need a best selling, seven book series novel idea to start writing. Write that shitty werewolf story that is made entirely of clichés or write that story where vampire pirates use artificial intelligence to kidnap sailors and turn them into zombies.
As long as you’re writing, THATS ALL THAT MATTERS
what if we’re all characters in a book
WHAT IF WHEN YOU FORGET WHAT YOU WERE GOING TO SAY IT’S THE AUTHOR BACKSPACING
guys why isn’t everyone reblogging this it’s a scientific breakthrough
and when you’ve had a sense that you’ve been through a certain day or moment before, it’s cuz the author is re-writing the same part of the story, just with better context
look…………….. write as much shitty fic as you want. nobody can stop you. you’re learning constantly and it’s better to write hackneyed implausible ridiculousness than it is to not write at all out of fear of fucking up. you’re good
There was an experiment a professor did. I think it was pottery students. He did an experiment of “quality” vs “quantity”. One half of the class he told; you have to make as many pots as possible. Good pots, bad pots, shitty pots, whatever. The more pots you make, the higher your grade.
The other half of the class were told, “you can make only one pot”. But that pot had to be perfect. The quality had to be high; the highest quality pot would get the best mark.
But when it came to the grading, they noticed something weird.
All the best quality pots were in the ‘quantity’ group.
The guys who were literally churning out pots, trying to make as many as possible, not concentrating on the quality. But every pot they made, made them better at making pots. By the end of the month (I think it was a month) - they had some pretty awesome pots coming out, because they enjoying finding all the ways and all the things they could do to make all their pots. Where as the ‘quality’ guys had spent their time reading up on pots, and technique, and researching and planning; which was all great but they’d had no further practice at actually making pots.
The best way to get really good at something, the only way to be really good at something, is to make lots of shitty attempts at that thing several of which will fail. If all you create are perfect things then you won’t improve, because how can you improve on perfect?
tl:dr MAKE YOUR SHITTY POTS.
I know I’m getting close to finishing my time machine because I’ve caught several older versions of myself attempting to sabotage my lab
I love this one bc the narrator sounds so unconcerned with the fact that their future selves are obviously trying to stop them
Anyone else’s blogs turning into a mix of lighthearted fandom content and deeply upsetting politics? Cause mine is.

alright i wanna talk about nazis and oregon for a moment. Oregon was known as the ‘ white utopia’ for a while there. the history of hate runs deep in oregon. the government in the 60′s was made of of mainly KKK members and prob nazis
oregon had something called the Black Exclusion Law in the 1800′s oregon is just as and in some ways more racist than the south.
a black woman walking her dog im ashland oregon, one of the most liberal hippy towns in oregon was told and i quote:
‘It’s still an Oregon law, I could kill a black person and be out of jail in a day and a half. Look it up, The KKK is alive and well here.’
American redguard has put up flyers and now we have neo nazi groups doing the same this.
not bringing attention to this dark underbelly of one of the most ‘blue, liberal’ states is letting them win. this needs to be talked about this needs to be addressed and oregon needs to do something to step up their game or shits gonna go bad fast.
this is the flyer
this is their twitter page
they show pictures of tearing down pro feminism flyer, posting their flyers on protesting signs
they have targeted a local theatre known as the oregon cabaret with the tweet saying :
your lights went out. Where is your safe space? What about the gaslight project? #Ghostlightproject
they are calling out antifa and activists in the area
this is real
this is scary
and it needs to be known
alright folks here we go again!!!!
same town that the nazi (cascadian national resistance) group is back at it again
only this time it is this
that is right folks. a nazi truck parked downtown main street. this is a high traffic area. its a theatre town with a international known theatre and shakespearean festival. so TONS of out of towners coming in to see shows. they fucking see this!
SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE NAZI ISSUE IN SOUTHERN OREGON. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. THIS IS REAL. THEY HAVE THREATEN BUSINESS AND NOW THIS. PLEASE.

I have developed a habit where when a character in a book dies I just assume they’ll miraculously come back to life later before the end of the book. Sometimes it happens. Most of the time it has not happened.
I want a sitcom which is just every single Shakespeare character as college students in a dorm building.
