Friendly reminder.
I was chuffed with my observed consult. Picked up the rumbling mitral stenosis in my patient, as well as hypothesised correctly that the cause was rheumatic heart disease. Now back to the wonderful world of obstetrics :P.
Advice please!
Agh you guys I think I’m pretty positive about my career path. I want to do adolescent psychiatry, which as I understand it is 13 years of schooling after high school: the usual 12 for med, plus an extra year for my sub specialty (adolescents). D: any advice?
Would inbox but your ask isn't enabled :P. This is my current dream. I'm almost finished with medicine and I have not clicked with many specialities except this one. It's not what I'd describe as easy, however, and psychiatry exams are difficult. Where I study, if your patient e.g. walks out on you in a state of delusion, you fail the exam. But it's interesting, and hell, if you don't go for something you're interested in within medicine, you will regret it. I don't know whether you're in med, but in case you aren't, it is a long time, so be prepared to devote your 20s to med and specialising. However, it's rewarding, especially helping adolescents in my opinion (I'm especially interested in teen depression and anxiety). If you don't want to do adolescent psychiatry, remember you can also do adolescent psychology. Think about whether you are more interested in the therapy or the counselling or both. Anyway, if you have any questions feel free to ask :). I can only help from a similarly interested POV.
Observed consultation tomorrow. Outfit planned and ready for tomorrow morning. *still waiting for the nerves to kick in*
A little table to how to get rid of all that negative self-talk. We have to learn look at the good in situations too, instead of dwelling on things we can’t change- because you know what? We may not be able to change what is happening but we CAN change how we view it!
Got a lot of work to catch-up on this weekend.
Today was difficult. Had to watch a woman's face fall whilst she watched her sonar, expectantly waiting for an image of her baby, only to be told she wasn't pregnant and instead had a uterine cancer (and that she'd have to wait 3 weeks for a CT scan, and indefinitely for a surgical theatre). It's one thing to deliver bad news, but to deliver bad news and then to tell the woman that the hospital can't do anything about it due to lack of resources and an overall mismanaged health care system...that is both infuriating and heartbreaking.
The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.
