I fucking hate this picture and everything it represents. Steve McCurry made millions off of this picture and its what launched his photojournalism career into the spotlight. While the woman in this picture got absolutely NOTHING and lived an awful and horrific existence. And calling her “Afghan Girl” is so disrespectful. Her name is Sharbat Gula and her life could have been made 1000X easier had McCurry shared his wealth with her - or even if he couldn’t find her, to share it with of refugees who he exploited. And honestly the idea of a white man going into wartorn nations (that are that way bc of american imperialism) to take pictures of refugees to profit off of their pain and trauma is gross

ok let me just say yes many white photographers are pieces of shit but boy this didn’t include several pertinent facts worth knowing:

“ More recent pictures of Gula were featured as part of a cover story on her life in the April 2002 issue of National Geographic and she was the subject of a television documentary, entitled Search for the Afghan Girl, which aired in March 2002. In recognition of her,[21]National Geographic set up the Afghan Girls Fund, a charitable organization with the goal of educating Afghan girls and young women.[22] In 2008, the scope of the fund was broadened to include boys and the name was changed to Afghan Children’s Fund.[23] After finding Gula, National Geographic also covered the costs of medical treatment for her family, and paid for the costs of a pilgrimage to Mecca.[24]

McCurry made several unsuccessful attempts during the 1990s to locate her.[11] In January 2002, a National Geographic team traveled to Afghanistan to locate the subject. McCurry, upon learning that the Nasir Bagh refugee camp was soon to close, inquired of its remaining residents, one of whom knew Gula’s brother and was able to send word to her hometown. However, a number of women came forward and identified themselves erroneously as the famous Afghan Girl. In addition, after being shown the 1984 photo, a handful of young men erroneously identified Gula as their wife.

On 26 October 2016, Gula was arrested in Pakistan by the Federal Investigation Agency for living in the country using forged documents.[15][16] She was sentenced to fifteen days in detention, and she was deported to Afghanistan.[14][17] The decision was criticised by Amnesty International.[14] In Kabul, Gula and her children were welcomed by President Ashraf Ghani and former President Hamid Karzai at the presidential palace. The government promised to support her financially.[18] In December 2017, Gula was gifted a 3,000-square-foot (280 m2) residence in Kabul for her and her children to live in.[19]

It has been likened to Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of the Mona Lisa[2][3] and has been called “the First World’s Third World Mona Lisa”.[4] The image became “emblematic” of “refugee girl/woman located in some distant camp” deserving of the compassion of the Western viewer.[5]
