Everyone has some slight character changes after the pilot. Fi drops the accent, Michael isn't as silly, Maddie doesn't have the blond wig, Sam gets his shit together a little more (though that is arguably an in character change since Michael showed up)

I definitely think he was a kid with dreams of space and flying - this is the kid who sneaked out of the house to see Star Wars 😁 But I imagine by 17 he would have at last outwardly moved away from some of that. Which isn't to say that it wasn't something he still loved internally, but societal expectations and Frank would have expected him to ditch the childhood toys and Be A Man. I don't think it's surprising that he ran off and joined the military.
