[mass text to the Alpha Squad] [except for Maine] We're all going base jumping. Expenses paid by the Project because I filled out paperwork to make this a team building activity so none of you have a reason to ditch like babies.
[[S hit is there shore leave rn tAP TAP ALPHA SQUAD IS GOING BASE JUMPING OR WHATEVER NO TAKE BACKS im gomen life is crazy this will happen ]]
She didnāt know how to start, and she hated the hesitation building in her gut. It wasnāt like she ever hesitated over anything usually, but it was different. It was a sensitive topic, or at least, she wanted to go about it like it was one, try not to rile up Carolina, not after their last big spat. But she knew what she wanted to say, she had it all in her head to say, it was actually doing it that was being an issue. A dumb issue, one she was mostly forcing on herself to keep from kicking up more trouble with Carolina. She didnāt want a fight right now, she didnāt want another argument so soon after the last big one. She just wanted to spit it out already and not piss off Carolina or lose face.
"So," South started, casually, a hand lifting to wave vaguely as she shrugged, "I talked to the Director again, passed on the Beta thing." She kept her steps and voice smooth, light, as casual as possible because casual was good, light was good, light casual- good. "I mean, itād be pretty fucking awesome but, lets be honest here, you guys would be lost without me. I mean, holy shit, I told you guys about it and the whole shipās been in a fog since." She glanced out of the corner of her eye at Carolina, waiting a breath before adding, "Besides, Iād probably end up drowning half of any squad under my command when they didnāt listen well enough, pretty sure thatād get me some brig time."
She doesn't pause, there's no hitch in her step or sudden raise of her eyebrows, but Carolina runs the news over in her head a second time in something akin to surprise. South doesn't surprise her often, but this might go on the board as one of those times. Carolina never would have expected South to back out of it. Not this easily, this quickly, this anything. She'd been sure that, if South was going to be removed from the Beta Squad's position as team lead, it'd be by the Counselor's hand with the Director's order after something got fucked up one way or another.
"Huh."
Carolina stops to size up South. Not that South would bullshit her about something like this because South can be a dick but she's not a complete idiot and knows better than to pull something like that. "I could have sworn you've said before that you'd rather sit in the brig than wake up for some of my squad training exercises."Ā

Thatās not fair and itās not true either. Besides, itās not like he wouldnāt come visit and clean up anyways.
Screening process.
South had finally decided what she wanted to do about the squad situation, she just had to actually buck up and talk to Carolina. Not that she was nervous, just cautious, she knew not to crowd Carolina too much too soon, but being South, she wasn't about to wait forever. She just hoped it was long enough when she spotted the flash of red hair and decided to shimmy on up, falling into step with Carolina, opening her mouth to say something but shutting it instead for a moment.
Carolina's resolutely decided to just drop all the Beta Squad business from her mind. She still suspects that the reason she heard it from South without a single word or hint or question from the Director is because this is somehow another test. He gets weird about her duty and... connection with her squad. Taking one of them away and placing them into a squad of their own would provide opportunities to test her sense of duty and her connections. And since South went ahead and decided things on her own there wasn't anything Carolina could do without wading into insubordinate waters.
It's not like her to avoid or be crowded out of places because of other people, so she continues going about the ship as she normally does. Because, yeah, there's still work to be done and all that shit. She's seen South around briefly, but this is the first time South's gotten up the guts to actually get close and into her space and Carolina just continues walking without a single glance over to her. If South is going to lose the guts to say whatever she wanted to say or do whatever she wanted to do, Carolina wasn't going to help her out any.Ā

Oh please, itās not /that/ bad, plus itās not like the rest of our place is messy, you seen it, spotless except for my room, I mean, thatās gotta say something
I think is says "North does way too much around the apartment" more than anything.
[text] Carolina you're good with rules and regulations. [text] Are there any particular guidelines aside from the obvious "no drugs, don't kill anyone, no damage to public property" etc. that I should follow in regards to throwing a party?
[text] Are you being serious.
[text] Where do you want to have this party?
[text] Well, somewhere legal?
[text] If I had a house, Iād use my house, so I have no idea.
[text] Reasons why Iām deferring to your judgement on this because youāve also got an invite.
[text] It'd be a hundred times easier on you if you could find a place off campus. All the dorms are obviously out of the question. The university isn't going to want to be attached to it, just in case anything does happen.
[text] There are ways to throw a "party" on campus, but it involves a good pound of paperwork and that'll be where the obnoxious rules would come in.
[text] So find a house or something.
[Text] Hello again, Agent Carolina. I was wondering if I may ask you a few more questions, if it would not be a bother to you.
[text] You can ask, weāll see what I answer.
[Text] Do you believe an Agent should specialize as most of them do or be more⦠well rounded? The age old āJack-of-All-Trades, but master of noneā proverb. [Text] I am not asking if I should specialize or not- That decision has been made. Iām curious to know more about your ideologies and thought processes.
[text] It's good for team dynamics for the members of the team to specialize.
[text] Not only does it provide places of "belonging" for the agents, but it provides the well-rounded unit behavior while simultaneously allowing for a higher level of performance and skill to be displayed.
[text] Similarly, specializations create varieties of perspectives and considerations that are useful in mission planning and field responses by ensuring that all aspects are considered and all bases covered.
[text] However, an agent should not be limited by their specialization.
[text] Personally? I prefer specializations of thought, discipline, and behavior rather than talents. For talent-based or more "physical" specializations they should ideally be able to be applied in other performance areas.Ā
[text] For a personal example: I am an expert in martial arts. However, hand to hand combat is not the only instance where my expertise can be useful or displayed. It's useful with capturing targets, responding quickly to moves, fighting with weapons, and a number of other things. You're not an idiot, I'm not going to spell it all out for you.Ā

[email] oh Hey are the room rate a lot cheaper than an apartment, Iām guessing yes. Silly question, that and care cats allowed?
[email] I donāt know what the actual rate is for the campus housing but for my apartment youād be kicking in about $375 a month for rent. Cats would be allowed, but youād have to pay for the apartmentās pet deposit.
[email] Oh thats not bad. Iāll pay it for sure. Its a lot cheaper than my rent thats for sure. Iāll be a runner up if needed.
[email] Write up and send in your answers to the posting's prompts and I'll add you into the pool of candidates.Ā

[whispers this was for the college au]
((...... harold you ding dong you've gotta spECIFY but also her response still works so go for it))
Wash considers her out of the corner of his eye and smiles just a bit. At least itās not just about South moving up. But his eyes fall back to the track, one theyāve run a hundred, if not a thousand times. Training and training. All for CarolinaĀ because of Carolina. Not the project.
"You are our leader, āBells. We all know that." He says slowly, piecing together thoughts with each step. "But maybe this is⦠One of those situations where a mistake has to be made before thereās a lesson? Butā¦"
There has always been a fear of the Director in the squad, standing behind Carolina because sheĀ was a buffer. The reason they stayed together and werenāt assigned to other squads or missions. āIām sure sheāll be fine and you know that if anything goes wrong sheās still going to turn to you. We all would, āBells. Youāre our safety net and weāre yours.ā
Carolina counts the swishes of her ponytail behind her, focuses on the way the bounces feel because it still manages to add a little pep in her step. And she breathes. Keeps her head, doesn't let the hurt get one over on her cool head. Lets the venting with Wash be her emotional safety net like she lets her squad be her physical safety net on missions.Ā
"Still fucking sucks," Carolina quotes back at him. Maybe, with how mushy gushy she's been getting with Wash, she would have pulled him in for a half hug if they'd been in her room. But syncing up their footsteps here and a bit of a sighy, slightly resentful smile seems to work just fine here. It's all part of finding the right balance.Ā
He gives her a helpless little shrug and can only meet her eyes for a few seconds before he has to focus back on the track and keeping pace with or heāll end up ass over teakettle. āItās a⦠Big opportunity for her. And you know that itās⦠Weāre going to be monitored to, to see how we adapt.ā
A heavily sigh leaves him as he shakes his head. āIt still sucks. It just⦠Fucking sucks.ā The curse felt wrong on his mouth and he made a face. āIām trying to think about what a good opportunity it is for Sarah but I just feel so⦠Betrayed and left behind.ā
There's a grunt in agreement and the curl of Carolina's clenched hands tightens.
"I'm not angry about her moving up," comes next, in a defensive tone that comes out a little sharp because, yeah, there's selfish parts about why she's upset but she's still professional. Even in her emotions. (Most of the time.) She's a leader for a reason; she's the leader, her specialization is being the leader, for a reason. "I want you guys to get better. That's why we train. That's why I'll be harsh with you guys. I recommended you for Recovery even though it'd distance you from us because I knew you'd still be with us.
"I can't protect you guys when you're not mine. I can't prioritize other squads over mine. I can't be the buffer between you all and him if you're not under me. And she just took off."Ā
Thereās a certain nervous tension in the air that Wash can feel even before he sees Carolina on the track. Just something very wrong, a really big shift that shouldnāt be happening but it is. The team wasnāt a team anymore. And that was just plain olā weird. Only one of the Dakotas would be with them, watching their backs as always but not rubbing shoulders or literally back to back on the field.
He saw Carolina running and watched her for a few quiet seconds, hesitating as he stepped onto the track. He didnāt want a repeat of last time, that fight had taken too much out of both of them. But she had invited him and heād leave if she wanted. Boundaries were something he was definitely going to respect.
Waiting until she circled around to him he fell into step next to her. It was easier to just listen to her breath and the pounding of their feet for a few passes before he finally found something to say. Something right, or at least he hoped.
"Itāll be good for⦠Your rivalry at least, right?" He half teased, "now⦠Now you guys can butt heads over squads and complain to each other about trying herd cats on a battle field."
The track was where Carolina naturally gravitated when the rest of the ship started to get jumbled up. Wash had his little corner of space. This was Carolina's long before she ever took step on the ship in the way that she could find a place on any running track.Ā
Carolina's feet hit the ground a few times before she responds, looking to Wash as her priorities change from her time to... herself? Her squad? Something along those lines. "Our rivalry was just fine without her leaving."
