thinking about JTV today and i'm still amazed how badly they fucked up the main romance
They really should've just left Michael dead. I don't even care about either of the main men BUT fr imagine Michael's POV
Nearly get murdered by some super-villain, get amnesia and placed in some country-ass town with a new identity, confused for years about your past. Finally recover your memory only for your wife to treat you like an annoyance for getting in the way of her current love life, her new boyfriend (and past rival for her affection) begrudgingly lets you see her but there's no joy in that moment - it's just sort of awkward that you're back when everyone moved on already. your FIL who you thought was a close friend never makes arrangements to see you after hearing about it. your wife gives you a chance but ultimately dumps you for her current BF (who again, was a past rival for her affection). everything about your old life is basically gone and nobody wants you back. so you're basically stuck just living life as a hick named jason with some random rude cowgirl LMAO.
SORRYYY but it makes everyone look horrible!!! i loved the story so much more when they just kept him dead. i even liked jane/rafael, the themes of how to move on after the insurmountable grief of being a young widow, and by bringing him back they just trivialized all of that to the point I don't even want to rewatch it. And made all the main cast look like assholes. ESPECIALLY Rafael for letting their son disrespect Jane + then kicking her out of their shared home.
it completely ruined any rewatch value of the show for me, instead I just come on here and bitch every time I remember how badly they fucked it up
Ricky owes his valedictorian win to that kid he was paying to do all his schoolwork in the first few seasons.
Whenever I think about it, I just cannot see Jane and Rafael lasting. I also wince at Petramos, because the writers made Petra so awful to JR at parts that the relationship still feels tainted. Petra does not really deserve JR after lying to her.
All this to say - Jane V and Petra already worked through all of their differences and managed to genuinely love and care for each other in spite of their rough beginning. They have fun together! They bring out the best in each other! I can easily see those two getting together in the future, once their current relationships come to an end. Jane V is definitely bi.
Third wedding for Jane, and third time is the charm, eh?

ADRIAN IN 1X01
when i theorize about what could happen in a show, my brain strives for canon compliance. but when it comes to ben’s character that is so hard - he was a decent but troubled teenage boy the whole time but in season five he hacks amy’s e-diary, won’t drop the idea of them reuniting even after amy explicitly rejects him, and loudly proclaims to anyone who will listen that he’s only moving and going to college in NY to follow Amy. literally willing to move ACROSS THE COUNTRY to follow a girl who says she wants nothing to do with him anymore.(i’m sure she still had lingering feelings for him as her first love - but she was at least making it clear she didn’t want to pursue anything with him.) ben is a complete sack of shit in the late seasons.
season 5 would need to be straight-up rewritten to make ben’s character even remotely redeemable - all the same plot points could have stayed without him turning into a massive creep. he EASILY could have wanted to go to NY on his own, leo is such a new yorker (with a business still in NY too!) i am sure he would love for his son to go back there.
the way ben actually acted in season 5 - he really should have been reported for harassment. faced some consequences for being a creep. felt immense guilt and shame about his actions and gave amy an apology tour. but nah its all just shrugged off. the writers seemed to want us to like ben - but then also treated him like a cartoonish villain getting in the way of The Sacred Family ricky/amy/john. fluctuating from decent dude who strives to follow his heart and do the right thing - to complete creep who should straight-up be in jail
tbh ben and ricky both never really listened to what amy wants (ben in a much creepier way) and i can’t imagine her ending up with either of them. so the finale was right about that much lol
finished my re-watch of the show & read brenda’s interview about what happens after the finale, and wanted to think up my own interpretation of what happens to the characters after the show - based off a blend of the canon, the actor’s person opinions on what would have happened to their characters , and also my own opinion on what would have been realistic for everyone. just for fun! under a cut because its long and i cringe at myself
Ricky stays single for awhile after Amy leaves, focusing on his education and parenting john. Starts to reconnect with Clementine, as friends but also a sweet and innocent crush on both ends as they study together and hang out around the coffeeshop often.
Shortly after they get together - bam! Amy comes back after their agreed upon summer semester in NY, and decides to go to school in CA. She wants Ricky back and to reunite as a little family - still confused and conflicted about what she wants in life. Fueled by a sense of obligation and some semblance of love, Ricky sadly dumps Clementine and gets back with Amy.
They make it official and marry with a courthouse wedding, bringing only John and their parents along - not wanting to waste time on planning a wedding for a third time. They convince themselves that they’re really in love this time, but ultimately, they don’t. Ricky misses Clementine and Amy finally admits there is no excuse behind it, she just doesn’t want to be married to Ricky. Maybe not married to anyone. They divorce just as quickly as they got back together.
Ricky realizes that Clementine was the first person he felt a real, genuine passion and romance for in a long time. He tries to get her back, but she’s hurt and can’t forgive him after being rejected by him for Amy TWICE.
Adrian had dumped Omar for constantly pressuring her about her future and decided to stay and finish her studies here. Her, Ricky, and Jack had been a trio of friends throughout college. She took Ricky’s advice and started therapy. Her life took a positive, free-spirited spin, actually having fun and enjoying herself with casual dating and pursuing her law career! Just as she’s about to move on to law school, Ricky falls for Adrian yet again - after seeing her genuinely change and being her friend the entire time, always with a soft spot for her. They get together, and Adrian finally realizes that she IS genuinely over Ricky, and finally they are both genuinely content in just being FRIENDS.
Adrian, after finally getting to know herself and coming out as bisexual, realizes that she is in love with Grace - who realizes she is a lesbian during her time in college. Maybe only after school and years somewhat apart do they realize their feelings for each other. They get together and stay together, marrying and becoming a power couple of Doctor (heart surgeon Grace) and Lawyer (Adrian! immigration law). They have a bunch of kids - some adopted, two with sperm donors. Wealthy life
After dropping out and divorcing, Amy turns a new leaf and tries to discover herself and what she wants. She uses the money from the house Anne sold to travel the world instead of paying for school - with John in the summer, solo otherwise, and gets an artsy career of sorts while she lives a more nomadic lifestyle. Living a good life. Bisexual. Either John is her only kid or she has another accident baby with Ben in college - but her and Ben do not end up together. Maybe the Boykewich money can fund her lifestyle, lol. I imagine Amy finally just wanting to do her own thing and heal her inner child in adulthood. Not wanting to work a normal job at all, after having no free time in her teens.
Ricky manages to win back Clementine with time, trust, and romance - and they end up marrying, Clementine becomes step-mother to John and they have two more kids together. Happy, stable middle-class family.
Ben goes on to get a bunch of therapy and gets into a succession-esque plot as Leo’s businesses grow bigger and bigger. Idk if he’d be more of a Kendall or Roman Roy. I am choosing to ignore his S5 horrid cartoonish characterization for this entire thing lol
I like to think Henry somehow safely bailed out of joining the army and was Ben’s roommate in NY. Alice too?
Madison does end up a cocktail waitress in Vegas, single and living a hectic life for awhile, but her and Lauren still end up together after a gay rom-com plot pulls them closer together
Jack idfk what he does, stay in college football til he graduates and then ends up a personal trainer on instagram, moves to the valley. never settles down
Ashley gets married to someone completely new in Italy and decides to live in Europe with dual-citizenship, her and amy make up years down the line, and now she’s just the cool ass european aunty of john who visits for major occasions only
lord knows that on this show you are never allowed to move on from the person you had children with bc you are bound to them forever - unless the other parent dies or turns out to be gay!
BEN HACKED AMY’S E-DIARY???? he’s so fucking creepy. wtf.
also it would have made more sense for it to be, idk, an anonymous blog diary that he found or something but the writers are too committed to completely trashing his character
why did they make ben so creepy... they really had him want to move to NY just to follow amy??? 😭 he’s one character that would have organically made perfect sense to move to NY. he’s a rich-ass kid with tons of family in NY. him and his dad SCREAM new yorkers, I bet Leo would even love to move back - he does not seem like a California man lol. they could have had this subplot without him being a huge fucking creep. the writers really hate his character after season two
also if Amy just wants to be a high school teacher then it really doesn’t matter where her diploma comes from... she can avoid loads of out-of-state fees + dorm fees + other debt by going to school in CA then moving to NY. going to school with in-state tuition is expensive enough. just a relevant detail since this show wants to act realistic lol. amy’s future involves being haunted by MASSIVE student loans on a teacher salary!! anne was offering amy the whole-ass family house just for ricky/amy and nora, or to continue living in an apartment of their own. anne offering to sell the house and give her money for school is huuuuuuuge though - how does everyone have such wealthy and generous parents
so tired of omar pressuring adrian to rush into marriage and kids AGAIN. she is not ready to do that again, the poor girl went through a huge trauma ONE year ago and just got divorced!!! AND she is only like, 18? 19 maybe? there is no way these two don’t break up again after the finale. every episode all he does is pressure her - into a monogamous relationship, into getting engaged, into moving to NY when she doesn’t want to, and now into a marriage and children she doesn’t want. like why do you two like each other again?
brenda’s interview retcon ending makes less and less sense so i choose to ignore it completely in favor of the actors opinions. george married kathleen and just purchased a restaurant. why would he move to NY with his new wife and business being based in CA? is business going so well that he wants to be bi-coastal? why would he live with nora instead of the woman he just happily remarried, kathleen? lollllll
i hate every character in this show, adrian gets harassed by some creep and first clementine insults her WHEN SHE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT HER - then finally goes normal and offers to help her. then Adrian tells Omar about it, and he blames her and asks wtf she was doing - then gets protective of her.
everyone sucks (minus adrian and nora)
why is clementine coming at adrian, telling her that she MUST be after ricky because she’s staying late at the coffee shop to wait for him? wat? clementine just reunited with ricky and learned he was “married” today, how does she know anything about adrian and why does she care LOL
they definitely decided later on to make omar 22 because they realized ben was right that he was being a CREEP for dating a high school girl???? and making sure to really emphasize adrian being a legal adult. gross gross gross. also i did not know it was even possible to get a master degree at 22. omar fast tracked his education and now he’s ready to fast track his love life to getting marriage and having babies with a girl he met like two months ago apparently lol
adrian is right to not want to think about marriage for a long time - and to put her education first! she has literally been through a marriage, loss of a child, and divorce all in high school. let her live life for awhile instead! why is every character obsessed with rushing into marriage and babies? i wish there was at least ONE normal character who was consistently like “why tf are you all rushing into marriage in HIGH SCHOOL???”
i do still find it REALLY WEIRD and BAD that this show keeps romanticizing the idea of high school girls dating college boys. especially considering grace was still an underage junior dating someone in an unspecified year at college... that’s creepy as shit, she is a minor.
brenda: everyone is super straight and moves to new york to be straight married with babies actually, thats the true ending
the cast: wrong. actually all of our characters are gay and single with successful careers and a new gay love triangle
ricky is kinda annoying ngl, he’s a sex-pressuring douchebag + bigtime cheater for the first two seasons. and then again a sex pressuring d-bag in season 3 or 4 when he gets with amy. plus he was straight-up flirting with amy’s sister for awhile. they can try to spin it as ashley being crazy all they want - He was 500% flirting with her when that arc started. even when ricky/amy are engaged i get why amy starts to not really want the relationship anymore. every time she tries to open up about her friends drama, her parents separating, or troubles with adrian, ricky just does not want to hear it. shuts it down with “i don’t want to get involved” and tries to have sex with her instead of letting her vent. guilts her for wanting to play hooky for one day to go to the beach with her family. i would be annoyed in that relationship too!
he’s charismatic and a good father, good employee, good head on his shoulders now and all that, but it makes sense why all of his relationships fail
haven’t gotten to clementine in my rewatch yet but i am starting to think she might be the actual good fit for him, once he can internalize that he isn’t obligated to be with amy just cause they have a baby together. i would say it could be interesting to see him try again with adrian now that they’ve both been through so much self-improvement, but tbh i think there is way too much bad history there and they are better off just being friends fully over each other and acknowledging the hurt they mutually caused one another
