"We're doing our best, at least. I just think it's fun." Dani was way too serious about it for how young they were. She was hard to keep up with — she just had so much more energy and drive than him, and he was alright with that until it was a pain for him. Mundane issues, for sure, compared to whatever Theo and Adeline were going through.

He wondered why he hadn't brought any of the siblings to his place before — probably an issue of time or the fact the Duval home had much more space. It'd be nice to change it up more often, like they were now — regardless of how weird and stressed they were acting. A walk into the city for food and the arcade sounded like a lot of fun anyways. He saved allowance pretty well for moments like these.

He had noticed Adeline's demeanor, of course, but didn't say anything. She seemed so — tired. Giving caffeine to a small child might not be a great idea. But it sounded funny.

Danny ordered himself some carrot cake and some coffee, giving Theo time to think for a bit. Gave him time to think as well, as he sat at a table nearby to wait for them. He was torn between — being outright annoying until Theo caved in and told him what was up, or being more subtle about it. Either way, Theo clearly had a lot he wanted to say.

Theo ultimately decided that now may not be the best time to find out what caffeine would do to a six - year - old — instead hoping that the overload of sugar that a large hot chocolate would provide would be enough to keep her on her feet . She accepted it , at the very least — perhaps a good indicator that she was , at the very least , okay enough for hot chocolate . Not that she seemed to be particularly excited about it . Not nearly as much as she should have been . Or rather , USUALLY WAS . It occupied her hands , at least — both wrapped around it , too small to hold with only one , keeping them off of him for the time being . For better or for worse . He would get black coffee for himself — pouring in a small amount of cream and sugar on his own after receiving it . With it , he got a cake pop for Adeline and nothing for himself — unsure whether or not she would even eat it , but still felt it necessary to attempt some kind of offering . Some recompense for what had happened . She didn't touch the cake pop — not yet , at least — but she seemed to wake up the smallest amount as she continued to slowly sip her drink . It gave him some hope about the possibility of her managing to keep herself awake throughout the rest of the day . So he'd call a taxi — which would be set to arrive in about five minutes . Quickly , then — thankfully . The less time they sat somewhere quiet and easy to speak , the more he could feel the unasked questions build further and further . Because of course there were probably at least a hundred that needed to be answered — none of which he wanted to answer , and most of which he wasn't even sure he knew the answer to . For the moment , he tried to distract from them as much as he possibly could . " So — what kind of games do you think we should we play ? Cranes ? Ticket games ? "

He was eyeing the two of them pretty much the entire quiet time they spent at the coffee shop. Hard not to when they were acting this strange. Adeline was clearly sleep-deprived, which opened up even more questions as to why. Not that Theo seemed any more rested than that.

He sipped his coffee, staring next at Theo as he spoke. "Both, maybe? There's a few that might be fun to play together." Playing more competitive games with Theo was fun — prizes were just a bonus, really. "Definitely at least a few cranes, though. I've been practicing."

He had realized it'd be harder to talk in a noisy arcade, but he could work it out. Despite Theo's clear attempts to avoid talking about stuff, Danny got the feeling he really wanted to talk about stuff. He was willing to try an coax it out of him — but it may be better at the arcade. With how Theo was trying to dance around talking about whatever was going on, it might be best somewhere harder for anyone to overhear. "You two look like you need some sleep more than anything. You're sure you're good for the arcade?"

It was probably inevitable that something seemed off . For as much as Theo had always been good at staying quiet about things , it had never been something like this . BAD , sure , but never so distinctly black and white in nature . And perhaps even worse was that their mother hadn't reacted nearly how he'd expected HOPED she would . She hadn't even really seemed shocked so much as betrayed . But perhaps it was only that shock looked different on people . Or perhaps it was only the denial part of grief . And then eventually — no , SOON — she would snap out of it and finally do something about it . Whatever that something might be . Because ignoring it couldn't possibly be the answer , could it ? So he only needed to hold it together for a little longer . Just until their mother got the sense to figure out what they were supposed to do . Then , it wouldn't be his problem anymore , and maybe things could begin to shift back to how they always had been — and even if they would only have one parent and less money , things would be better , wouldn't they ? In any case — they just needed to get through today , and perhaps tomorrow — perhaps even as soon as their father got home — he might have an idea of what would come of this . They just had to get through today . He wondered whether Danny would still want to hang out together if he lived farther away . For now , though , those thoughts could do nothing but fester within his overtired mind . To distract himself , he'd force himself to listen instead to Danny's description of what sounded like , all things considered , a relatively MUNDANE argument between him and his twin . A blessing , really . Of course , Theo understood how it felt to fight with siblings . He'd gotten in plenty of arguments with Elliot over equally petty things , after all — but now ? There was almost something comforting about the idea of fighting with Elliot over who got what seat in the car on the way to school . " If she does figure out how to solve everything with cooking , she could have a shot at a Nobel Peace Prize . " A dry , teasing tone . Believed it was possible about as much as he believed elephants could fly — but of course , it seemed Danny was on the same page , too . " Don't think I'd mind coming over sometime , though — if I can . Sounds like you're both pretty good at that stuff . " Theo definitely wasn't — could count on one hand the number of times he'd even helped in the kitchen with anything more difficult than making a sandwich . The cafe he'd mentioned was just down the road , and they would come up on it in no time at all — Adeline's grip at some point shifting from the end of his shirt to his sleeve's cuff . She looked half dead . Despondent . Completely zoned out . But perhaps that was largely because she was exhausted — and now Theo was contemplating how terrible an idea caffeine would be for a kid her age . When they arrived at the counter , he'd nod to Danny first . " What do you want ? You can order first . " Because now he was quite deep in contemplating this .

Now was certainly the plan . Unfortunately , if not INEVITABLY , it seemed Danny was already suspicious . He felt his sister's hold on the edge of his shirt tighten when that question was asked — only sending another sharp , jagged shard of guilt right through his heart . She's not . Maybe he's not , either — but he was trying not to think about how he felt about it all . His feelings weren't what mattered now . And yet , this escape had been his idea . He nodded . Forced himself to smile as he brushed it off . " Yeah — no — everything's FINE . " A lie , but spoken with a laugh , as if the thought that anything was wrong was absurd . " Just need to get out for a little while , you know ? Being home all the time is making me feel crazy . " Summer break had been wearing on him even before this — the tension always there even before last night . And now it was only even heavier . " Want to get a snack first ? That cafe up the street ? We can call a cab from there . " Anything to keep from waiting here any longer . He couldn't bare to face his mother right now . Only hoped that once their father was home she'd have somewhere better to direct — whatever she was feeling . It was still difficult to tell .

Of course he was at least a little suspicious. This was completely out of the ordinary for them — and he'd most likely question Theo more when Adeline wasn't within earshot. Far as he could tell, Theo looked stressed out about something even through that smile. Adeline was harder to read, but seemed especially clingy.

Still, he'd push it aside for now for the sake of leaving. Being stuck at home all the time was a familiar feeling, at least — couldn't imagine that much was a lie. "I get it. Yeah, the cafe sounds good.

Not that this was entirely new — they'd gone out before, to eat and play. It was more Theo's hurry that threw the mood off as much as it did. He wouldn't bring it up again until later, though, not wanting to make this entire walk awkward. He'd talk about other things in the meantime, to think about something else.

"I almost didn't make it out the door, honestly. Dani was trying to pull me into another one of her cooking battles. Girl watches too much TV, I swear. Thinks she can solve all our problems with cooking." Not that he disliked cooking, obviously, but it was tiring when she was in a mood like that. "I'll invite you guys next time. At least you'd get food out of it."

His old fc is closer honestly, but Danny's hair is. Actually a nice reddish-brown. This dweeb is clearly very bright haired. If I knew how to edit that well, I'd just make it darker myself........

Thank God Danny was normal . Or at least , being normal about this . He definitely knew plenty of others at school who would scoff and accuse him of being stuck with babysitting duty . And as much as that had definitely happened before , he certainly didn't need his sister hearing it now . Where should they go ? He hadn't thought that far ahead . Somewhere safe for a six - year - old — not that he or Danny really had a tendency to do anything particularly dangerous most of the time . He sighed — considering it . Danny came over to play games — so perhaps the arcade . At least they could play games there — even if they weren't the same ones . Adeline probably wouldn't mind . Maybe it would even be good for her . She always eyed the things in those cranes when they occasionally went together before . Maybe he could see if he could get her something . ( Or maybe something from the prize store ? Anything to assuage the guilt that threatened to strangle him . ) " What about the arcade ? Then dinner , maybe ? I'll pay . " With the credit card his father had trusted him with for emergencies . But screw that . This small an act of rebellion was more than warranted enough . A couple hundred dollars wouldn't make any difference to their parents , anyway . He only knew he wanted to stay out as long as he possibly could . Not that he was sure how much longer Adeline would hold up , considering how sure he was that she had slept about as much as he had — which was to say , not at all . So perhaps today would be a lesson in just how long a six - year - old could go without sleep before passing out entirely .

Normal enough to not make it a scene, at the very least. Of course he was going to ask some questions later — likely not within earshot of Adeline, though. As far as he knew, she was better off not getting involved in drama, not knowing she basically already was without her knowledge — or consent.

There was plenty of places they could go that were six-year-old friendly, and really, the arcade was as good a choice as any other. They both knew Adeline would probably enjoy some of the stuffed animals they had in the crane machines — they weren't all impossible, anyways.

"Y — Yeah, that's fine. I was gonna suggest the arcade, anyways. I guess you wanna go now, then?" Was expecting previously to end up going in the house like usual, but now they seemed more in a rush to not go back in at all. It was weird. "You're like — okay, right? You've never been this excited to get out of the house before."

It was the worst day of their lives — but still the world turned on . The tension of the morning refused to ebb — didn't help that their mother had been oscillating between acting obscenely passive - aggressive and quietly sobbing in the bathroom . Meanwhile , their father had gone off to work before dawn even broke and Adeline had been clinging to him like a lost puppy since he managed to tear himself out of bed . Then Elliot's questions that he so badly didn't want to answer , because as the oldest , somehow he had to be the responsible one here . So when Danny arrived expecting their usual co-op gaming session , Theo raced to the door — his baby sister only barely lagging behind , clinging to his shirttail . As soon as the door opened , he stepped outside , closing the door behind him and his sister . " Hey — what if we just go out somewhere instead , yeah ? I need to get out of the house for a while . Mom's being — annoying . " Annoying perhaps wasn't the most apt description , but how was he supposed to explain the truth without saying everything ? At least his mother always did have a tendency to be overbearing . So perhaps he could just put it down to that . Then , almost as an afterthought — " You don't mind if she tags along , right ? "

Danny was, of course, hardly aware of anything bad that might have happened. But the tension was clear as day as soon as he looked at the two siblings in front of them. Had expected to be let in right away like usual, but instead they quickly rushed out of the house.

Their mom being annoying was hardly unheard of. Dragging along Adeline, however, was far less common. Typically she'd be left home whenever Theo and Danny went out. That alone was strange enough.

Not that he had anything real to base this weird vibe on behind just a — weird vibe. Could easily be nothing.

"Yeah, I don't mind — going out or taking Ads along. Where you wanna go?" Danny was mostly wanting to play games again, so he was hoping for a trip to the arcade. Though she wasn't sure if Adeline would want to do that — didn't know a whole lot about her in general, really. They communicated little, though their few interactions were pleasant. She's easier to deal with than Dani.
