Is Shepard religious? Do they have any key beliefs or moral motifs that guide them?
Shepard does not believe in any form of organized religion. She would most likely categorize herself as an Agnostic Atheist. Shepard sees most forms of religion in the Universe as a power structure and sees most religious leaders as con artists out for their own gain. She won’t begrudge anyone who chooses to believe in Religion and will respect their beliefs as long as they respect her own.
However, Shepard does have core beliefs that guide her to be a good human being. She believes that people should do good in the Universe in order to make it a better place. Shepard thinks that in order to live a good life, you should be the best person you can be. Shepard also has a strong belief in her crew. Shepard sees the best in them and knows that they are better than think they are. For example, she knows Garrus doesn’t particularly see himself as a leader, but Shepard knows that he is one of the best damn leaders she had known and wishes he could see that. They are the ones who keep her fighting and remind her everything that can be lost if she doesn’t win the war. Shepard holds each of her crew members in a high regard. Shepard also believes (and would deny this if you asked her), that if you give people the chance, they will do the right thing. Shepard tries to come across pessimistic, but is really an optimist.
Towards the tail end of the war, Shepard starts to hope for some sort of Afterlife in order to be with the people she has lost.
Yay! Another Thane Krios/Shepard fic! Basically, it’s them talking about her religious beliefs. Enjoy! Thane Krios belongs to Bioware. It’s also really short.
“Thanks, Thane. That was really interesting. I definitely have a lot to think about.” Shepard says, standing up and moving from her seat, stretching slightly. After the long talk with Thane about the inner workings of his religion, Shepard feels the need to get moving and process what she has just learned. His religion is quite interesting and it reminds Shepard about some of the older human religions she had read about.
“What about you, Shepard? Is there a god you believe in?” He asks, still in the same position, only turned towards her now. Shepard freezes slightly, hoping to avoid that question. It’s not that she is scared of what Thane will think, it’s more the reaction. The religious had mixed reaction to her faithlessness, anything from trying to convert her to sending her to hell to respecting what she believes. Shepard knows she should not be worried about Thane. After all, he seemed like someone, who would be more than happy to let her believe what she wanted.
“I don’t believe in a god.” She says, turning to face him.
Thane seems troubled by this. “Hmm…” was his only reply. Shepard took her seat once again across from him.
“You know, just because I don’t believe in a god. That doesn’t mean that there is nothing I believe in. I believe in being a good person in order to live a good life. I believe in my crew. I believe that they are better than they see themselves and they are the one thing that keep fighting when all is lost. I believe in the Universe and I like to believe that everything will be okay in the end.” Shepard replies, watching him.
“That is interesting, Shepard. I suppose faith comes in all different forms.” Thane replies, understanding what she means.
“That it does. Got any more questions?” She asks with a smile.
“Many more.” Thane replies and Shepard lets out a laugh, before the two launch into their next long conversation.
