Stop Cyberbullying (Kirk, 2018)

Artist Statement

For this project I firstly researched “Resolution” as a theme. I found that resolution can mean a number of things but I understood it as a “firm decision to do or not to do something”. Therefore I wanted to create my project around a decision based around the internet. I looked online at different examples and came across the term ‘Cyberbullying’. “Cyberbullying or cyberharassment is a form of bullying or harassment using electronic means.” This is a significant term in today’s world as there are many suicidal deaths because of Cyberbullying. It can destroy many young people’s lives and I think it was a relevant topic to choose as it has affected many college students of our generation. The GIF I wanted to choose was supposed to be different and unique; I wanted to show a real insight into what Cyberbullying is and the consequences for the perpetrator. I have shown a conversation of text messages on a mobile device. These texts were to show an act of Cyberbullying by communicating through a mobile device. I wanted to show the conversation as if the texts were just being sent as you can see the keyboard appearing. I added in a glitch font with text stating “Stop Cyberbullying”. This was done by virtue of showing the hands appearing at the end with blood on them. The hands were shown to symbolize the consequences which may come to the abuser. If the person committed suicide it would truly leave the perpetrator with blood on their hands! I think it gives the GIF an eerie finish and a moment of realism to the story I am trying to portray. This GIF was created in this way so that it can send a clear message to the viewer.

Artist Biography

My name is Barry Kirk and I am currently in my fourth and final year in Dundalk Institute of Technology studying Communication in Creative Media (Hons). It turns out to be my fifth year of college in total as I studied a PLC for an extra year before crossing over to a third level education. I studied Creative Media from the very beginning and have become very interested in design. At school I was thought Art as a subject but was not always the best drawer although I loved the subject itself.

Last year around the month of March I was on work placement in Dundalk at the towns very own tourist office. On the placement I was allowed to get a feel for how it would work with someone who wanted designs to be created. I was proud of this as not only did I create content for my employer but for the whole town of Dundalk!

I would love to work in a design studio when I leave college and hopefully focus on Editorial Design as it was once a module I undertook and enjoyed thoroughly.

Title: Old School

Artist Statement: The weeks before i created my piece, I had been shown a lot of retro types of designs. The one that stood out to me was the first mac computer. The reason it stood out to me was that it is completely different to computers nowadays in both size and what can be done on it. The first thing i did when on the mac was used the ‘paint’ application to compare the difference from what you could design on that compared to what you can do on design applications such as Photoshop nowadays. You could not do much on the first mac other than draw lines, shapes or free hand draw on the paint canvas and use simple colors to fill the shapes.The simple shapes i was drawing led me to the idea i came up with. The first thing that came to my head was that it was a very outdated way to design and brought me back to when i was younger and used paint for the first time on a computer. That’s where my main focus came from in my design. The logo in my design was something i always had drawn when i was younger and i felt it would fit well for a project like this. I used software such as GIMP, Photoshop, Premiere Pro and After Effects to create this piece.

Artist Biography: My name is Dylon Guinane. I am a fourth year student studying Communications in Creative Media in Dundalk Institute of Technology. I would consider myself a creative person. I enjoy doing design work although i would not be a very good artist in regards to drawing, i prefer working with design applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator or any Adobe software. Artist Statement:

The theme for this project was “resolution”. For this I wanted to create a piece that was topical, maybe slightly controversial while having some depth to it. I was looking at the word resolution and examining the different contexts it can be used in. I came to the idea of resolving crimes and decided it may be interesting to take this theme and apply it in the context of resolving trials in a courtroom. The way in which I related that idea to digital culture was how, over time the we are beginning to see a rise in trial audiences when you take into account those who keep updated with big trials in court on a daily basis. Although it is not a new trend as we can look back at how much coverage the OJ Simpson Trial received, there is now a different medium involved. I wanted to reference how it seems that in today’s society there seems to be two trials for any big case, the trial that takes place in the courtroom with the professionals, and a trial that takes place over social media. In the gif I wanted to portray this crossover and highlight how no matter what precautions are made for a case, that if it’s in the public eye, there will be discussions that occur outside of the courtroom that may affect the opinions of those inside the courtroom, or gain enough traction outside of the courtroom that if the public’s popular opinion doesn’t replicate the court’s final judgement then the complainant or the defendant can be subjected to their bias that has been created within a trial by social media. I wanted to create a TV style glitch effect which would feature some static effect and RGB glitching along with some text overlaying the background image which would draw the connections for the viewer because the background image and the message being portrayed in these glitches.

My name is Mary McKeever, I study Communications in Creative Media. I love creating content through different forms of mixed media. I have an interest in photography, but when it comes to design, I like to incorporate as many different mediums as I can. I enjoy creating work that has a deeper meaning than you might first assume, particularly through more abstract designs. I believe designers and artists have the great potential and, arguably, the responsibility to use their skills to highlight issues of their time, whether they’re societal or environmental, big or small. Artist Bio: My name is Dearbhla Brodigan. I am 22 years old and live in Dundalk, Co. Louth. I am a 4th year Communications in Creative Media student in DKIT. One of my passions is to create digital works online. My favourite modules over the past few years of college has been photography and radio production. I enjoy using premiere pro and photoshop as they are my strengths. I love to manipulate photography that speaks for itself. I hope to pursue a career in Digital Marketing after my level 8 course. I am hoping to do a Masters in DCU in 2019 as it will help me progress my future career. Artist Statement: For this assignment I wanted to look back the past 20 years on the internet and how it has changed. I had to incorporate the theme of Resolution into my work. This was a challenge at first as I struggled to link resolution with something interesting to do my net art on. I started to research, and I realised that resolution can mean to have an intention to do something. There is a lot of positive intentions on the internet but also there can be negative aspects. I decided to do my net art piece on the world of pop up ads and scammers. Scammers have the intention of taking your money. Pop up ads can show up anywhere online and you can even get emails with them in it as well. In my gif you can clearly see the beginning is of the Windows start up 98. I wanted to distort this section because the internet is not the same as it was 20 years ago. It has changed drastically. I also wanted the desktop of my gif to be the old version to contrast against the pop up ads. As the gif progress’ the mouse clicks onto one button and one pop up ad appears, then a lot more seem to appear. Until finally the mouse clicks on an actual pop up ad and the computer has been infected with a virus.

I wanted to end the gif with a scammers face, because nobody gets to see who is behind the criminal action. It is an anonymous person hiding behind their computer screen while taking your money, hence why I had the dollar bills behind the scammer. I created the GIF using a combination of Adobe photoshop and premiere pro. I then added the glitch aesthetic by using the website mosh. I am very happy with the outcome of my gif.

Net Art Artist Statement

The theme for our net art piece was resolution, after some investigation in the different meanings of resolution I decided to go for a more non-conventional meaning of resolution. I decided to base my net art around the definition of resolution in the terms of chemistry which is the splitting of a certain thing into its separate components. The net art piece I created is to represent the control that mobile phone devices have over ourselves. It first shows a mobile phone with “I control you” coming out of each corner to symbolize that the phone is the brain and the “I control you” is the nerves which are glitching and sending out singles to our bodies. It then switches to an exterior shot of someone holding their head awaiting the command from the phone whilst the face is also glitching and changing colour. The point of this is to show that our phones and technological devices are controlling us.

STRANGER DANGER (Ogundimu, 2018)

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

I have always been interested in Digital and Creative Art for many years but what I needed was a push in the right direction and that I found some years ago when I moved to Ireland, the world was so different with new smells, sights and conversations, everything was so much more digitalized and this gave me the inspiration to create rather than to use the created and I began dabbling in photo restoration as my starting point.

From having an Economics degree and alternating to Creative and Digital Art was a big challenge and a change for me, everything was so free when it came to art, everything was completely up to me, rather than the logistics of economics, I felt like I was finally free, like a bird who could soar to new heights and fly anywhere I wanted to go, there were no barriers.

Fascination was a mere understatement when it came to the world of Creativity, I learned to appreciate color and see it in different ways, rather than the simple CMYK and RGB, color was like the foundation to a house I was building, strong yet stable, I saw the bricks as building blocks of my work and making my way to the roof, the peak of my efforts, the roof was mine and others evaluation of my work, the happiness and joy a person can feel after achieving something that they put so much effort into is unexplainable.

Inspiration has pushed me to work harder every day and my work is continuously developing, taking any chance to gain experience everywhere I go, including myself in projects that I may not have felt capable of in the past, has made me who I am today and presently I am in my final year in Dundalk Institute of Technology majoring in Communications in Creative Media and I couldn’t be happier. “Sky is the LIMIT”.

Adefemi Ogundimu is a Creative Designer, dabbling in Digital Arts for the past 6 years before becoming a professional, originally from Nigeria, Adefemi has been living in Ireland for nearly half of her life, immersing herself in the culture and taking inspiration from the scenery around her. As a mother, Adefemi’s work is experimental and creative using a range of ideas and multiple different software’s to achieve her final goal, this in turn has made her capable of being out of her comfort zone. As a Creative Designer, Adefemi not only wanted to gain inspiration but also give it which makes her work internationally available for everyone, this in turn gave her the motivation to continue as a professional Creative Designer instead of as a hobby.

I think my glitch enhances the girls’ thoughts and intentions to use the image for her website and then the reality hits where its not the right thing to do and people should just learn to protect their work against this happening to themselves

In school I was always the “arty one”. I am in my last year of Communications in Creative Media in Dundalk Institute of Technology. I love Film and watching behind the scenes footage of my favourite movies inspired me to go down the media route. I love seeing how things work!

I am very grateful of the opportunity I got last summer where I got to work on a real film set. I found a post on Facebook where a film company `Wild Stag Productions` were looking for an camera assistant for their film `Follow the Dead`. I travelled to Offaly and I stayed with them for 5 weeks while we filmed. It was the most amazing experience I ever had. I got to ask plenty questions and had so much fun. The film is currently waiting to be released in cinemas and I can’t wait to see it.

Currently I think I would like to go in to illustration, although I would also really love to become involved in character design for animation or concept art.

Artist Statement:

This piece is part of a college project, in which the student produces a piece of net art pertaining to the theme of resolution in digital culture. The 5 second gif is my own personal interpretation of resolution. My chosen theme is gaming and in particular, modern day retro gaming. I feel the chosen theme ties in with the theme of resolution in digital culture in the sense that even though the word resolution has many definitions, the definition described as the process of reducing or separating something

into constituent parts or components is one I felt was quite fitting to my net art piece.

The gaming experience involves several individual components brought together to complete the experience. These include:

A TV or PC Monitor to view the game

A controller such as a keyboard & mouse or a gamepad like the Xbox 360 controller.

The physical gaming console/PC

The coding and programming of the game itself and then to link it all together

All of these elements are present in all modern gaming but how does resolution and ‘retro’ tie in? The amalgamation of these individual components is generally limited to licensed hardware and software from an individual company i.e. the once popular gaming console known as the ‘Sega Megadrive’ was limited in the sense that a player of said console could only play games created and developed by Sega for Sega. This was common across many different gaming consoles from and still is to a certain degree. The Sega Megadrive, which was released in 1988 in Japan, is seen now as a retro gaming console, as are many once popular consoles, whose popularity waned in the advent of a newer, more powerful gaming alternative. However, software known as emulators can be downloaded and installed onto a PC that will be able to play games from the retro gaming consoles such as the Sega Megadrive and many more from that era and more modern eras too.

The ability to be able to play these old games is a meeting of modern technology and retro gaming. The individual components are numerous when you think of how the Sega Megadrive, which is basically a form of computer complete with motherboard, microprocessor, soundcard that processes the code contained within a game cartridge can now all be downloaded and installed onto a modern day PC with a relatively small file size. Games can be played with a keyboard and mouse or several different controllers from several different companies, even the original controllers from old gaming consoles or modern interpretations of them. Emulation software is popular but the legality of it is questionable. Groups such as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) state that there is a need to ‘reassess the design and scope of international intellectual property rights in the digital age.’ The online gaming community came together to create and share the ability to play these retro games again, free of charge, and is available to those even without a high bandwidth due to its small file size. This ties in the chosen theme of resolution again as when we look at gaming, it can be seen as the process of reducing or separating something into constituent parts or components. The effort and knowledge of several individuals from the gaming community came together to recreate old gaming consoles in a modernized setting, for the gaming community, free of charge.

Artist Statement

I thought about a lot of objects that could be used to represent the original message, but in the end, I chose the white ball. The circle of different colours on the outside of the ball is intended to express different interpretations of the same event by media of different levels, times or regions. Each layer of the ring has a different colour, but there is no white. The circles spread out quickly, which means that the messages of different media convey the same thing to the public over and over again.

I saw a story many years ago about a young man who accidentally hit a jaywalker while driving his car. He had been so kind that he chose to get out of his car to save the person who had been hit. The young man became a street rat, and though the law did not punish him as he should, the angry people did not get around him and made him miserable for a long time. I don't think it was a mistake by angry people who didn't know what was going on, who could only judge by what was distorted. What is wrong is the media that disseminates information. For various purposes, they add additional information to the information or reduce the necessary information to mislead the public. In my work, the misguided public is not shown, because the public is not in the process of information transmission, they are just the recipients of information.

The white ball has stopped beating at the end of the GIF, while the ring continues to spread. Just like what I just said, although the original event is over, the media communication is not over, and the impact of content communication is not over.

As for the effect in GIF, I want to try to express the feeling of the Internet age. In the age of the Internet, information spreads so rapidly that a single event may have happened in just a few minutes, and various "facts" that have been adopted have been sent to every user's phone. This is why I use a slight Mosaic effect in the middle of the GIF.

I was born in Beijing, the capital of China. Every year since I was born, I have experienced many changes in the city. It is very modern, but it is also an ancient capital. Therefore, my works always want to express the two themes of change and tradition.I also live in Ireland for a long time, and the strong cultural atmosphere makes me prefer to present my ideas in a more introverted way.

As an adult, I chose to go to Ireland to continue my studies. My major is communication & creative multi-media. My study in DKIT enables me to use a lot of software skillfully, which gives me a way to turn my ideas into reality.

There are many opportunities to practice in the learning process, and the works of these exercises are occasionally put on the network by me. Through reading other people's comments on my work, I carefully improved my shortcomings and sorted out the omissions in my thoughts.

Artist Statement: For this assignment I developed a piece of Net Art with the theme of Resolution in a Digital Culture, portrayed with the use of gif-based artworks. My piece is referencing 80’s nostalgia as the history of the gif initially was formed 1987. I wanted to go at this angle for the project as I really enjoy 80’s elements and visuals. I find them aesthetically pleasing, but some viewers may find it tacky or outdated, with my creativism I always base it around vibrant outlandish colours With regards to the theme Resolution, it has so many interpretations and definitions to the word. My interpretation of the word would be ‘’Problem Solving’’. With that I did research on the word in visual graphics. The images that I obtained during the research where very diverse such images light bulbs, puzzles, gears and Rubik’s cube. That was the bases of my research I went more in-depth into the exploration of 1980 and gathered ideas from other gifs that were out at the time that had the 80’s ‘’feel’’ and ‘’look’’ , such gifs included neon colours, pixelated art pieces and grainy imagery of popular and classic TV shows such as Miami Vice and the A Team. I identified with the themes as four out of six of my siblings had grown up in the 80’s passing their knowledge of 80’s culture onto me. The four elements in my design include: The Skull - The skull is a pixelated piece that I created from an image that was found on open source. The Glitch - The was made by dividing the skull into three colours Blue, Green and Red integrating each colour with a underlayer which made the glitch effect. The Binary Coding Background - The binary coding background was to give a new matrix feel to the piece as it creates depth to the image and glitch and a ‘‘new wave’’ feel. The Bulb overlay/The Line overlay These two pieces were added in to give more texture to the piece to make the image fuller and state its point. The Text The text is layered dividing into three colours Blue, Green and Pink that is to match the glitch to give a 3D effect. Artist Biography: As I had been previously in Media Arts and Technologies course I have a good idea in the development of projects, including such projects/modules in graphic design, AV, editorial design, design in motion and 3D animation. My way of design always includes colour. Any colour palette I use if it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. From neon to pastels I enjoy using colour. It expresses who I am as an artist. I like clean and simplistic but also love crazy and eccentric pieces of art. I like new and old forms of art from 70’s psychedelic movement, new wave art in the 80’s and the rise of graffiti and street art in the 90’s. I have many favourite artists, and these would include Andy Warhol with his use of colour with double exposure, and Rick Griffin who collaborates and links his use of typography within images giving it a trademark design/era with a Led Zeppelin and the Grateful Dead feel. Artist Statement

For my net art gif design I decided I wanted to have a musical theme as music is one of my keen interests. I thought computerised music such as DJing, would fit the design of a glitched art piece rather than any standard instrument like a guitar or drums as technology can be known for glitching out and crashing. I looked in to various black and white images first to get an idea of how my gif could look, then looked up multiple DJ gifs available online for inspiration.

When researching these gifs I found multiple images where the background would rapidly change colour behind the DJ and his decks, as if he was controlling the lights through his sound system. I decided to use this idea and placed about five bright aluminous colours for the background that would blend in together and change every second. I felt that this wouldcatch the viewers’ attention instantly and would help it stand out more.

I wanted to keep the image light both visually and consciously, which is why I decided to add a bright smiley face on to the DJ’s head, along with two bright lightning bolts on both sides of the DJ which would fade in and out as the background colour’s changed. I also placed two records both cracked down the middle on to the turntables to make it look as if the lightning bolts had damaged them.

As our theme for the gif project was resolution, I decided to go with ‘practice’ for my piece,which the DJ in the image is doing. I incorporated the word practice in to the image by placing it on one of the records on the left turntable and having it rotate as if it was playing from the set.

Artist Biography

As an avid music fan of all types of genres and sub-genres, I almost always incorporate an element of music in to my projects. For example, in third year Media Arts I designed a twelve- page magazine based on hip hop music and its artists. I have also designed a logo in the form of a colourful psychedelic boom box, and a pin badge with turntables and speakers on the cover. On top of that I am in the process of designing an album cover for an independent Irish artist. Looking at these projects it's no secret my love for music, this project is no different. I decided I wanted to give my gif a rave vibe to it as the glitch aspect would fit with the theme of that kind of music. This is where the idea of a DJ came to mind and I decided to go with that.

Artist Statement:

This piece to me is meant to represent the massive leap in video game graphics in consoles. The character and background I created are meant to symbolise are meant to represent the Super Nintendo/Sega Genesis era of gaming. The aim was to capture the feel of a game from that timeline. The character is then sucked into a black hole, symbolizing time travel, or a leap forward through time to the present day. Then the following four images are public domain street images, in which the character is seemingly continuing his game/level. This is because I want it to be clear that the character is still in a game, that essence hasn’t changed. Just how we view the games, graphics wise has changed. I used real images for the backgrounds rather than creating my own like I had first intended to hint towards the realness/quality of modern day video game graphics. Also, in some instances with such high- quality graphics it is hard to decipher between television/real life and video games, therefore adding pictures with the retro style character will symbolise to people how far console video game graphics have come. The overlaying text of ‘real’ and ‘game’ is similarly meant to symbolise the confusion between video game graphics and live television. The glitch effect is a nice way of showing the time travelling aspect of the gif in that after the character goes through the black hole, nothing seems ‘normal’ again as it keeps glitching and jumping to a new location or image. Also, it being a gif and the fact it continuously loops depicts the continuous advancements in video game graphics, as the cycle continues/repeats itself. The reason behind the mac logo at the bottom, making it look like it is being played via a mac is because in the gaming community, gaming on a mac is frowned upon or looked down on. So I thought it to be slightly humorous in that sense.

Artist Biography:

I am very interested in gaming and many of my on going projects are either video game based or inspired. I much prefer the design aspect of video games rather than the coding. My favourite things to design are characters, props or background scenery and objects. I designed a level for a 2d side scroller which I presented at FIS Exhibition 2018 which I received a 2.1 grade for. This GIF project was inspired by one of my dissertation topic ideas which was ‘the evolution of video game design’. I try to capture how far and realistic game graphics have become in a 3 second GIF.

This piece was created as part of a College Project, in which each student had to create a piece of Net Art. The Net Art had to follow a theme - in this case the Theme was ‘Resolution’. The GIF had to be 6 Seconds long, this is what was created with the theme that was given.

This piece is based on the mind and our focus on materialism within our modern society. It focuses on what goes on inside our mind and how these materialistic things like money and clothes take priority over living in the present movement. This seems to be happening more and more with the younger generation with the rise of social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat we see a lot more people posting about materialistic things. This is troubling as a lot of younger people will sooner or later link their self-worth with their material possessions.

It also demonstrates how we are so blinded by materialistic items that we don’t see what is happening around us. This is the case with War as war continues to happen in foreign countries the younger and older generation tend to think ‘Out of Sight, Out of Mind’, they then put their focus into what new sneakers or car they can get. It’s a vicious circle that is encouraged in this day and age with constant advertisements it is easy to get caught up in it. This was made with a selection of open sourced images and software. The theme ‘Resolution’ provided me with the definition “The Process of reducing or separating something into constituent parts or components”, in this case I separated different parts of the human mind to get across my message.

Jamie Mallon is Twenty Two year old student from Crossmaglen, South Armagh. He is currently a final year Student in Dundalk institute of Technology, studying Communications in Creative Multimedia – He has been working as a freelance photographer for this last 3 years. His main interests lie within Photography, Social Media, Video and Graphic Design. He hopes to work within the audio visuals industry whether that be as a Cinematographer, Photographer or a Graphic Designer.

Since he was young he has always found himself doing something creative whether that be making and creating different things or drawing and sketching different objects. Artist Statement:

The gif that I have created has a multitude of meanings. One of such meanings is social media addiction. This is represented in the design by the figure consuming the rotating emoji like a drug. This is a clear indication of social media addiction, along with that the emoji is rotating into something that is similar to a pill. The figure in the design is in a black and white depiction to make it contrast with the on-screen glitch, following such the man has a skull over his indicating that its eating away at who we are, causing us to lose our individual identity. Social media addicting is a big part of digital culture, everyone is always on their phone. When people hear a ding, they immediately check their phones, longing to see if someone messaged them or gave them that much needed self-gratification in a like or a comment. Along with that the consumption of the social media is meant to indicate a solution or a resolution to loneliness, making people find company in the digital realm and in the texts, they send/ consume. This can be again be brought down to digital culture, given that the people of this generation are so highly dependent on technology and the digital world.I did the “game over” in a binary like style to implicate the effects of code on society and how it is the backing for everything nowadays. I hoped this design would convey the message of addiction to the media in reference to the digital media. I hope that in some sense this design can raise some awareness to social media addiction and the possible effects that it could have.On top of that I hoped that the emoji, while also symbolizing a pill would also have some symbolic reference to the cryptocurrencies, indicating that it is now a primary method of fiscal transaction on the internet, for both good and bad.

Artist Biography:

Rían Morrissey is digital designer and a fourth year design student art Dundalk Institute of Technology. Currently he is studying Communications in Creative Multimedia, which is an add on year for his previous course “Media, Arts and Technology.” Which he graduates from early November. Rían has a great interest in digital design, preferring software such as photoshop and illustrator. Given that he has spent years working on both he has become quite proficient in how to work them. Preferring to work with realistic image manipulation, Rían has experimented in multiple ‘Glitch Art’ personal projects, and a lot of ‘double exposure’ works. Examples of which can be found on his Instagram which will be linked at the bottom. Alongside all that, photography is also one of his pastimes, in particular macro work. This grants him the ability to use his own photography in his creations giving them a more unique and personal feeling.

Artist Statement:

This is a Net Art project which aims to explore the topic of Resolution in Digital culture through an 800 x 800-pixel GIF. The idea behind the art is built upon my interpretation of Resolution. There are many different meanings to it, but in this project, I want to look into resolution as a purpose, determination and achievement.

In a digital world like ours today, it has occurred to me how much people live their lives on the screen. Online identity has become so influential and crucial to people’s lives to represent themselves on this huge digital platform that we start relying and depending on it. What people do and want or their purpose have shifted from the physical world to tie in with the online activities and the net art is the narration of that fact.

The GIF art is about a young girl waiting on the Like notification from Facebook and eating the Like icon. It is a metaphor to show how much young people specifically has dedicated their lives to social media. Likes for instance have become a form of online social status to people want to achieve. The emotions of the girl changes from unhappiness and impatience to excitement is also more or less a demonstration of how people feel when receiving any kinds of social media acknowledgement. The exaggeration action of eating the Like, which compares social media to food, something people can not live without, shows how much social media interaction matters to our lives. As the looping of the GIF goes one, it creates a cycle where we will keeping waiting and wanting for a taste of social media. That cycle never stops. It might be digital content but it matters to most of us like any other real life aspects.

Mi Thao Doan is twenty-one-year-old design student in Dundalk, Ireland. She was born in Vietnam then went abroad to study Communications in Creative Multimedia at Dundalk Institute of Technologies. She’s mostly interested in Graphic de sign, web design/development and 2D animation. She mainly uses Adobe Suite for design and HTML/CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Ajax for web development. She enjoys working on products that are visually demanding but technical as well. She is a big fan of clean design and working with colors. Besides the aesthetic side, she believes that the most important factor on a design is its functionality. Mi is currently in her final year and hopes to get a job as a web or graphic designer after graduating. Screwy (McGloughlin, 2018)

Artist Statement:

Resolution.

The word suggests three things to me: a final act or conclusion, standing firm and certain of one’s self, and viewing something in greater detail. My inspiration came largely from a cat at my grandparents’ house.

She’s technically not their cat, but she comes to visit often. She’s agreeable most of the time. My granddad feeds her a little and she spends most of her time exploring their garden or lying on their couch. When I visited one time, she jumped up on a table and pushed an envelope to the floor. Most importantly, she was looking at me the entire time. This was enough in itself to make me want to make cats the focus for my project. Cats are often poorly misunderstood, but they are by and large sure of themselves and aren’t afraid to mess with people, to see how far they can push us even when we’re ten times their size.

I couldn’t get a high-quality picture of her, not one good enough to use, but I decided to use a cat in both the background and the foreground, using some artistic software to light up the eyes into something unknowable and bizarre. I deliberately and cartoonishly exaggerated the iconic cat’s mouth, turning it into a wide grin to better convey the certain smugness a cat gets when it practically dares you to challenge it.

The glitch aesthetic was fulfilled by the error at the beginning and the falling black lines throughout the video, and another cat in text art forms the background, its startled expression acting as a counterpoint to the foreground cat’s smugness.

Artist Biography:

Scott McGloughlin is a twenty-one-year-old Irish artist originally from the small, seaside town of Skerries. He is currently in the final year of his degree studying Communications in Creative Media at Dundalk Institute of Technology. His main interests are creative writing, research, 3D modelling and creating graphics with unusual online software. He currently hopes to finish his degree to a high standard and continue on for a masters or find self-driven, fulfilling work in the creative industry. After or during that, he’d love to live and work somewhere with a little more sun for a few years.

Having lacked the confidence to really pursue art when he was younger, the artist has been relishing the opportunity to experiment with creativity through visual mediums and works to stand out from the crowd. Currently undergoing a phase of heavy experimentation with bright colours, soft outlines and psychedelic imagery, his works are memorable and unusual enough to draw the eye.
