âThe gameâs not big enough unless it scares you a little."
âThen one could say that the game has gotten too big.âÂ
âYou must be Tal'kaela, then? Mika has told me a lot about you. Itâs a pleasure to finally meet you. There arenât very many Romulans interested in interacting with humans so I find your fascination with my people quite refreshing.â Cooper extends his hand to the woman, hoping not to offend her in anyway.Â
Talâkaela stared at the manâs hand, then looked back up at his face.  After a moment, she took his hand and gave it a firm shake.  âI am Talâkaela.  Seems you know more about me than I about you, though from your mention of Mika I can only assume you must be officer Cooper.â  She tilted her head slightly and studied him, waiting for his answer.  He could present a good opportunity to further her studies of humans, but before she gave him a charming smile and tried to get his guard down, she wanted to know just what Mika had told him about herâŠ
âYep, Iâm Lieutenant Cooper.â He smiled at her warmly. Cooper was never one to judge anyone based on their race. He didnât much about Romulans but he was willing to at least talk with her. âWould you like to have a seat?â He gestured to the chair in front of him. âI know youâre interested in learning about humans. I donât know how much help I can be but I donât mind a friendly conversation, but you honestly have to tell me, I thought Romulans wore their hair short? Why is yours so long?â
Talâkaela sat down and looked up at Cooper analytically. Â When he presented his question about her hair, she gave an indignant huff.
âIâ!  I can keep my hair how I please,â she said indignantly, âOne thing you ought to know about Romulan culture is that itâs considered disrespectful to ask strangers such questions.â
It was a harmless question, but it was a subject that Talâkaela tended to want to avoid for several reasons: Â The first being that because she had preferred to keep her hair long since childhood, she was often the subject of ridicule from her peers. Â A few nasty jokes made her decide when she was eleven to keep her hair short like everyone else. Â She joined the military shortly after this.
The reason she decided (and was allowed by the military) to grow her hair back out was also the second reason she wanted to avoid discussing it with Cooper; it allowed her to blend in better with humans when she wished to disguise herself as one of them. Â She wasnât about to tell this to the Starfleet officer.
âIf you want to know the answer to those types of questions,â she continued, âThen why donât you give me some information about yourself first? HmmâŠ?â
He stared at her in shock. âIâm sorry. I didnât mean to offend you. I didnât know that about Romulans.â He gave her a small head tilt. âMy experience with dealing with your people is very limited, youâll have to forgive my ignorance.â He slipped the drink in front of him. âIâm not very exciting. Iâm a communications officer, I like to go fishing on my time off, Iâm an armature photographer.â He shrugged, embarrassed by how dull his life actually sounded.  âI grew up in San Diego with my family and pretty much all my family is Starfleet so I knew I had to don the uniform eventually.âÂ
Though Cooper seemed to think that his life was boring, Talâkaela seemed interested. Â Her hardened, defensive expression softened into one of interest as he spoke.
âA photographerâŠinteresting.  What kinds of things do you photograph?â  The Romulan leaned forward, her eyes fixed on Cooperâs and filled with genuine interest.
âOh, well, landscapes mostly. When I go home on leave, Iâll go to places like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Hawaii or even Victoria Falls. Capturing natureâs beauty in a single picture is something Iâve always enjoyed doing. Itâs like youâre able to preserve that moment forever. No matter what happens to that place, it will always remain the same in the picture.â He smiled at the Romulan. âI could show some of my work. I just came home not too long ago and my family and took a trip to China. I got some great shots while I was there.â He scratched the back of his head, âSorry, I donât mean to monopolize the conversation. I just really like talking about that particular hobby. So, Talâkaela, was it? What is it about us that fascinates you?â
â
[text] Youâre such a loser.

"Dude, you seriously need to stop drinking so much. Where are you? Are you okay? Do you need help getting home?"

[Cooper] We only have fine officers on this ship, Lt. ;)
[thecaptain] yes, Sir. You did a fine job selecting your crew [thecaptain] I must have missed that class at the academy
[Cooper] Pike did most of the selecting. I just happen to have a heavy dose of luck [Cooper] Which class is that, exactly?
[thecaptain] whatever leadership class it is you took, Sir

âThis is the last time I volunteer to switch duty with Ensign Parker,â he muttered to himself, as he patrolled one of the isolated and deserted cargo bays. âAnd right after I had to watch that stupid horror movie marathon.â He slowly walked around, checking all the required areas when he though he heard something. âHello!â He called out. âIs anyone there?â Cooper carefully walked towards the sound and when he turned the corner was totally shocked to find what he did. âHey, are you okay?â He bent down to face the small girl. âHowâd you get down here all by yourself?â @firstxfherkindÂ
Elizabeth blinks up at the stranger. Cargo bay 2 was usually empty this time of day and was often where Elizabeth snuck to play, with her Momma on the bridge and Daddy in engineering no one was around to tell her not to. âOh um⊠I just kind of let myself in. The access codes are really easyâŠâ She plays with the hem of her dress and nods. âIâm okay yeah, just didnât expect to be caught, never have been before.âÂ
He blinked at her. "Ms. Elizabeth, you really shouldn't be down here by yourself. Especially if no one knows where you're at." He sat down across from her. "This is the first time I've had duty down here. I switched with Ensign Parker. My name's Lieutenant Cooper. Elijah Cooper. But everyone just calls me Coop." He gave her a small, worried, smile. "Is there a reason you're down here by yourself? Did you just want to get away from all the noise up above?"

[thecaptain] Sir, I am unaware of that phrase but if Lieutenant Uhura said it [thecaptain] Iâm sure it was the utmost compliment sheâs a very nice person
