@staff i've been here since 2012 frankly i think i have every right to complain when you make terrible "improvements" to your core product.
corporate bootlicker voice: dont worry!! if you buy crabs tumblr will fix it!!! they're in debt 🥲😭😞 we have to save them!! 🙌🥲🦀
this website's moderation sucks ass and it has a terrible bot problem and there are an enormous amount of bugs but thankfully we have a staff team hard at work not addressing any of these but instead making shitty ui changes that nobody wants
.......why is tumblr desktop laid out like twitter now.
ah.
the font on the dropdown menus on the left are hard to read and eye-strainy
clicking "activity" gives you a dropdown menu first instead of taking you to the actual page
tag search seems slower...? (could be my bad internet though)
it's honestly less "comfortable" imo to navigate when everything isn't naturally on the upper right
oh this is so cluttered. i miss having empty blue space on the left; this feels... loud and annoying.
if i wanted to use twitter or facebook, i would use twitter or facebook. but i'm using tumblr.
tumblr, i've complained a lot about many of your changes over the years, but blatantly reskinning yourself as twitter is maybe the worst ones right next to the beta editor.
why are we changing for the new users? this website isn't hard to learn. it's charm lies in not being like every other social media website.
tumblr needs to realize that the amount of people coming from twitter does not surpass the amount of people who have been here and already like the fucking layout and general workings of the site
if we wanted twitter we would use twitter, there's a reason we use tumblr and that's bc tumblr is tumblr not twitter
they're going to end up losing users who have been here for over a decade bc they want to appease people who have been here a week
how does that make sense @staff
the "tumblr is hard to use 🥺" comment from staff is so funny bc like. its not untrue. but the solution isnt to make everything algorithmic, its to stop hiding the FAQ pages deep inside the site. just like. explain shit to new users. a concept. also obviously just fix the search function
'can i copy your homework?'
'yeah just don't make it obvious'
the like to reblog ratio being almost the same is so funny, people are NOT happy with at this update lmao
the way tumblr is trying to distance itself from being a blogging platform is fucking. infuriating!!
like do you not know this is your strength!!! I want to be able to visit other people’s pages that have been CUSTOM MADE for their purpose!!! ARTISTS HAVE LINKS AND TAGS FOR THEIR ART!!! COMMUNITIES AND HELP/TUTORIAL BLOGS HAVE TAGS FOR SPECIFIC QUIERIES!!! WRITERS CAN LINK ME TO THEIR STORIES!!! IT HELPS BOTH THE POSTERS AND THE CONSUMERS TO MODERATE THE EXPERIENCE TO THEIR LIKING!!!!
SENDING PEOPLE TO THAT UNSLIGHTLY “BOARD” OF A “BLOG” THAT APPEARS NOW WHEN YOU CLICK THE NAME OF THE BLOG INSTEAD OF SENDING YOU TO THE ACTUAL BLOG IS SUCH A DUMBASS MOVE? IT DOESNT EVEN ALLOW LINKS!!! I CANT DO SHIT ON THERE!!! I CANT FIND WHAT IM THERE FOR!!!! IT MAKES ME NOT WANT TO USE IT!!!!
TUMBLR IS/USED TO BE THE MOST FLEXIBLE AND THAT WAS ITS BIGGEST MERIT!!! YOU HAVE ONE OF THE BEST TAGGING SYSTEMS AND YOU WONT LET ME USE IT TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL!!!
YOU CAN FOSTER COMMUNITIES, YOU LET PEOPLE KEEP MULTIPLE SIDE BLOGS WITHOUT HAVING TO SIGN IN WITH A DIFFERENT EMAIL, YOU ALLOW VIDEOS AND AUDIO AND +4 PHOTOS PER POST!!!! TWITTER CANT HAVE THAT!! TIKTOK CANT HAVE THAT!! REDDIT CANT HAVE THAT!!! FACEBOOK CANT HAVE THAT!!!
IM SO SICK OF THIS TWITTERIFICATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What features do you want most from tumblr?
Split Dashboard
Fully functional sideblogs
In-App Storefront for our own works
Return of adult content behind community labelling
Direct line of communication between community and staff
Functional searchbar
All of the above
Other (tags)
Split Dashboard - The ability to categorise different people you follow into different lists, so you can organise what people post! (potentially also do this with tags, but for the people you follow instead of general tag sorting)
Fully functional sideblogs - The ability to ask, reply, seamlessly queue/draft posts, and all the standard features of a main blog
In-App Storefront for our own works - A personal "shop" feature that users can list their own works to, such as art, music, services like voice acting or anything like that! (Could work via the Tumblr subscription service or be a one time payment for the shop/other extra features? idk this would be cool but it needs workshopping as an idea)
Return of adult content behind community labelling - Tumblr now has the infrastructure to allow for adult content that complies with all appstores, and are actively shooting themselves in the foot by continuing to ban it. This should be implemented safely, and could even require some sort of credit/debit card confirmation to do so (w/ like a payment of a penny to just verify) but this would also ofc need work to implement.
Direct line of communication between community and staff - Currently at time of writing this, all Tumblr staff have closed their asks, and the Tumblr support tickets are poor at best. Rarely are Tumblr active in communication or community feedback. For a time the only way to contact them was via twitter. There should be a way to directly communicate with a human member of staff when there are issues.
Functional Searchbar - What it says on the tin, please fix this Tumblr. Also make it so we can easily search untagged posts.
Tumblr apparently has no money because they mismanaged their site, oh no! How should they fix it?
Better merchandise in their store (not stolen jokes)
Better offerings for their subscription service
Bring back adult content
Donation link a-la AO3
Platform for artists to sell their art with a sub service for more features
Dress-up game!!!!!

None of the above (tags)

If tumblr were to ask for community suggestions, how would you want it done?

Protest The New Tumblr Changes
ok so since everyone and their dog absolutely hate the new changes outlined in this new post from staff, I've been thinking about what we can do about it. HERE is the contact page on Tumblr's parent company, Automattic's, website. Please write FEEDBACK/WEBSITE FEEDBACK/TUMBLR FEEDBACK in the "What's This About?" section HERE is the Tumblr help centre link, please select the category FEEDBACK when messaging them. My recommendation would be to write something like this, but in your own words to mitigate any spam filters: "Hello, I'm contacting you today because of the proposed changes to Tumblr's UI. This is not what the community wants, and will negatively impact all users of the site. Users enjoy the Tumblr experience because it is unique, and a throwback to the days before all websites were algorithm focused. Employing this sort of algorithm will kill your websites usability, and along with it, drive away your current userbase. People will simply remain using their other social medias, as New Shiny Algorithm is not the reasons why people would flock to your site. Please reconsider these changes, and instead reach out to the wider community about changes that we need to use Tumblr more easily, such as: - A reworked search function on blogs and tags as the current one does not work/is not stable. We also cannot search for untagged posts. - Better toggle options for people with photo sensitivity, your advertisements often strobe and it makes the website unusable. Ads should be tagged as flashing, or with content warnings for users (i.e diet ads, ads for horror movies with gore in them) that actually work (advertisements are filtered out of the tag system).
- Options for 18+ and NSFW creators on your site; Your userbase would quintuple overnight if you were to look into options for NSFW hosting and safe toggle options for adult users. The community labels were a step in the right direction, please pursue this further. This is by no means an exhaustive list of things, but changing the very fabric of what makes Tumblr work is NOT the move that any of us want. Please, again, reconsider these changes and listen to the community. Thank you" AGAIN please add your own points to this to help prevent spamfiltering of your messages, and please spread this to everyone you know. If anyone wants to add more ideas of what to add to this list, please do so in the replies, tags or add a comment to this post!
you want to help stop tumblr from murdering itself? here's how!
click this link and go to the support page, then click "contact support"
click on the category list and click on feedback
now you need to tell staff WHY putting in an algorithm will cause the site to fucking die, and be sure to be detailed and not a dick in it. theyre not gonna listen to feedback calling them assholes
viola, if @staff listens, we'll be fine
i encourage you to reblog this so we can get as many people leaving feedback as humanly possible. we need to let staff know this is an utterly terrible idea
by the way, tumblr has turned off asks on all of their staff blogs, so this is the only way to tell tumblr how you feel
here it is again because uh. seems relevant.
Oh and that fucking crab day post sends shivers down my spine btw. I say this as someone who owns multiple pieces of tumblr merch — support them if you want, or don’t, I don’t care, but we are NOT turning a tech corporation into our poor little wet meow meow who deserves all our money uwu. We are NOT pressuring normal ass people into donating to resolve a company’s millions in debt as if it’s some important charitable cause.
