Another Brick in The Wall

To those who want the wall, You will pay for it. Trump and congress can implement a tax on Mexico all they want. So you know what will happen then? Mexico will tax back. A trade war will ensue. Many goods come from Mexico. A majority of their cheap goods are purchased by the poor and middle class who will be paying more thanks to the taxes Mexico will apply back against us. So the tax on Mexico is intended to pay back what the American people pay up front, but once Mexico ups their taxes trust me you will pay. All of this will be pointless. As walls can be scaled or tunneled under. They can be circumvented by sea. The wall does not address the main issue. Why are people fleeing their homes for the U.S.? Is it a dream that no longer is true? Is it safety from their government and crime? Why are the legal means of entering the country so difficult? Reform on those things are the only things that will address your concerns. Not a wall. Sincerely, Concerned Citizen

The Inauguration is over… What Now? Part 1

To those who do not feel represented by the current administration,

The day after the Inauguration millions of women and men, on seven continents, marched for women’s issues, social justice, and against the tone deaf administration that would work to turn back the clock on the progress made over the last decade. Carry the passion you felt the day of the march with you. Carry the fire you have felt since November 9th with you. Speak to your friends and acquaintances about why these issues matter. Do so respectfully and do so intelligently. Screaming into the void will do naught but give you a sore throat. People often forget or simply do not care about the midterm elections since the Oval office is not on the ballot. Midterms matter. A vast set of power in congress and the states is up for grabs through the midterm elections.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives.

33 Senate Seats:

Democrat seat up for reelection: California, Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New Mexico, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Florida, Hawaii, and Connecticut.

Independent seat up for reelection: Vermont and Maine

Republican seat up for reelection: Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Nebraska, Texas, Tennessee, and Mississippi.

36 state Governorships:

Currently Democrat: California, Oregon, Colorado, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Hawaii.

Currently Independent: Alaska

Currently Republican: Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Maine.

Beyond these offices being up for election there will also be many local items decided by a midterm election as well.

Find a candidate you believe in. Stuff some envelopes, make some calls, and knock on doors. Do what you have to do to make sure that someone who represents your values gets into an office where they can do something about it.

If you feel as I do, that the current administration does not reflect your values, then you must take action. Do not sit idle. Do not wait for someone to do something for you. Stand up. Take action. March on.

Why They March

To the people asking why women and men are marching since Trump has only been in office for a day,

People are marching because of statements he has made his ENTIRE life about women.

People are marching because he plans to appoint justices who would work to overturn Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to choose what she does with her body.

People are marching because he has made some of the most abrasive comments against immigrants and speaks as though all people of color come from, or have experienced, the inner city.

People are marching because he and the republican legislature intend to defund planned parenthood which does far more for women’s health and reproductive health than just abortion.

People are marching because the republicans are working to repeal the Affordable Care Act with no clear plan of replacement on the table or what that looks like.

People are marching because they have the right to do so.

So when you call them “idiots in pussy hats”, I hope you never need reproductive assistance, I hope you do not have a pre-existing condition that would cause you to be refused insurance overage without the protection of the Affordable Care Act, I hope you don’t have to face the fear that others do, but understand some do…. and that… is why they march!

Open Letter to Those Who Elected Trump

Dear Republicans, Conservatives, Right identified, and independents who saw this as your choice,

“Grow up and work with trump” coming from the party of obstruction for the last 8 years is complete hypocrisy.

I will work and support him on the few things we can agree such as term limits for congress.

I will challenge and speak against roadblocks to the disenfranchised.

I really hope he brings back jobs, I’m not optimistic, factory jobs are gone. Gone are the days of $20+ without college or trade school. Those positions have been replaced with technology and labor markets America can not compete with on cost.

As a gay man in an education field my life will probably be more challenging and funding issues will continue to be a bane on my field.

To the future healthcare system: I hope it is great! In order for it to be so it has to cover pre-existing conditions otherwise people die or are buried under insurmountable debt.

I wish you luck Trump and those who supported you. But on every item we disagree I will continue to be a pain in your ass as long as I have air in my lungs.
