Perfect day for a 10 mile run through the city from Minneapolis to St. Paul. Even found a friend at the end of the race. #tc10miler #minneapolis #runtime
@runningmyownrace it was an amazing day! Run every year with my dad. I've been terrible about posting lately....just moved to Chicago and have been settling in there. May have to do some MN tris next year!

Really trying to convince myself to go ride....not working so far
Happy 4th! Happy to have kicked it off with a local race....even if local was just a town I was passing through on my way South.
Tropical Storm Bill.....AKA Ragnar Trail WV
I’m lucky enough to have an amazing group of friends that loves doing Ragnar Relays, particularly the trail runs. We’ve all done the regular Ragnar (12 people, 2 vans) and the Ultra (6 people, 1 van), but the trail is certainly the best (8 people, one campsite!). With the trail run you actually get to hangout with people, and sleep a bit more...a bit.
Last year we did Ragnar Trail WV and it rained. I was not quite prepared, no trail running shoes, limited rain gear. This year we were determined to be more prepared. For starters, I got trail running shoes :).
We headed out to Big Bear Lake, WV on Thursday. After picking up a friend in PA, we grabbed lunch and some cupcakes for the weekend....one of each kind.
omg, how good do these look
We got to the campsite late in the day, but luckily a teammate had been there earlier to snag a prime campsite.
We managed to get the tents setup and the gear inside before the Thursday storm came through. And by storm, I mean hail!!!! We all hunkered down in one tent, eating pizza, cupcakes and having a few beers. Two of our teammates were still on the way so we told them to just grab a hotel... setting up camp in a storm at 11 pm was not in the cards.
The tent felt like it was going to blow away despite having 6 of us in it!
scary stuff
The next morning we got prepped for the race. Our team started at 1 pm, so we had plenty of time to relax, eat breakfast and get the rest of camp setup.
pre-race team photo
I was runner 3 which meant I was able to get the hardest trail out of the way in the day time and first. Last year I ran it a midnight... not fun!
A look at transition between legs.
Last year the loop I did too forever - 2:40! It was the middle of the night, the trail was full of mud, and I was using regular running shoes. So this year, knowing the trail was tough, I figured it would still take me about 2 hours. As I got out on the trail, it was much easier with the trail shoes and the fact that it was early in the race so the trail was not yet trashed. It was definitely tough, but I was cruising along. Some how I looked down and I was planning to come in just over 1:30....which meant my team would not be expecting me for 20+ minutes!!! So I finished, and had to run back to the campsite to get my team.
Crushing the first loop
The second loop was tough - it was the second hardest, and I started at 10:30 pm. Running in the dark in the woods is a mix of scary and cool. It is beautiful and yet hard to see which makes it difficult to run.......but got it done.... only after stepping into a puddle of mud knee deep.
The third loop was the shortest and should have been the easiest, but it was the hardest. I was tired, my legs were tired. I was happy to be done.
However, the rest of the team still had loops to do and of course more rain was in the books.
A look at our campsite.. the Corona box is actually a lantern....
A look at the finish line.
Our medal
This was about 2 minutes before the storm came through....
Nothing like washing off mud in the storm
Looking forward to our next race in Tahoe!
I run because it makes me feel free. I run to have me time and to be with friends. I run so that I can set goals and then surpass them. I run for pizza. I run because God gave me the ability to do so. I run to stay healthy and fit. I run because I have an obsession with buying running clothes. I run so that I can inspire others to do the same. I run because crossing the finish line on empty hurts so good. I run because it teaches me so much about determination, motivation, and faith.
Why do you run your heart out?
I run to find that moment your mind goes quiet and the world fades into the background and you just are
Race Report: Nothing new on race day...except maybe 3 things
Second race of the season....I should have been ready. But I wasn’t. Not for the training - Coach Dave has been awesome - more for the life that gets in the way. May was a stressful and crazy month and consistency in my training has been lacking to say the least. I was getting in what I could, but with a trip to Guatemala and some work adventures in between, if I could get in a solid week of training it was a feat.
So of course I realized the day before the race all the things I was supposed to do...like put in my speed laces to test out and pack. And I thought the day before would be a good time to do both.
Pre-Race:
Rock Hall Oly is one of my favorite races. The town is great. The venue fabulous. The event super chill and full of friendly triathletes.
My friend and I headed out later than we wanted to....work... but were happy traffic wasn’t too bad.
We rented a house this year instead of camping - the last two years were super hot and miserable. As we passed through town to the house we saw that our favorite ice cream shop (a former pharmacy from the 1800s) was closed. Of course that was my first question to the property manager....who said it was not going to be open this year. WHAT???? Disappointment didn’t cover the feeling. But Rock Hall is a small harbor town so business is hard to keep.
We settled into the house - which had an amazing screened in front porch facing the beach.
I never sleep well before a race. I did my normal up at 11 pm, 1 am, 3 am, 4 am 5 am, 5:30 am, 5:45 am, 5:50 am. Since I was getting up at 6 am, I just gave and got out of bed at 5:55 am. The best part of all of my crazy wake ups... the realization I left my aero water bottle at home along with my salt tabs. Great, it was only going to be 80+ degrees.
Swim: 35:16
The water temp was 79 degrees, so no wetsuit. While most people hate that announcement, I love it. I don’t like my wetsuit so I kind of hate wearing it. Since Ironman, I’ve been working on my swim starts. Being more aggressive. And I have to say for this one, I nailed it. The swim to the first turn buoy was awesome. I was in the mix and sighting off the crowd. However at the first turn buoy I lost the crowd and got a bit off course. Apparently everyone had issues with the choppiness and sighting, though it didn’t bother more than any other swim. I kept my head in the game (which is usually a battle) but I wasn’t as strong as I started. All in all, I call the swim a win if I don’t get lost.
T1: 2:03
I didn’t try the flying mount, but managed to be quick about the swim to bike.
Bike: 1:16
This is an amazing bike course and the wind was at our back for the first 16 miles. I always have to remind myself that I can’t hammer it because I needed to save it for the run. The headwind was rough coming back into town, but the rollers and mostly flat course makes up for it. Other than my nagging left glute, the weird thing where I lose feeling in my hands and the fact I only had one water bottle, the bike was uneventful.
T2: 1:44
Tried the flying dismount... not quite though. This was one of those something new activities. I managed to get out of my shoes and to coast, but I never could quite get my leg over and just put my foot down. But hey I was close.
I also tried my shoes with speed laces and no socks. Two other new things. Wasn’t exactly fast at it (actually was slower than previous years of sociks + laces)...maybe practicing would have helped.....
Run: 57:57
OMG hot. It was insanely hot. I tried to plan for it, but being down a water bottle didn’t help. It was a two loop course and I tried remind myself when I saw some of top people flying by me. The course was flat with no shade, but most of it had a breeze which was critical. There was one section that didn’t and I thought I was baking in the sun, it was miserable.
I knew to hit the time I wanted I was going to have to run around 8:45 pace, which would be a push for me without the heat. My goal was to push, but keep it under the puking and passing out. Every time I started to get goose bumps, my sign I’m pushing to hard with not enough salt, I would back off a notch.
The run needed one more water stop on it, something to make it from miles 2 - 3 and 4 - 5. I pushed where I could, but knew it wasn’t going to be enough to hit the times I wanted.
Time: 2:53:45
I was definitely disappointed that for all of my training and new wheels I was a few seconds slower than as two years before (when it was just as hot and we had the same tail to head wind) and 2 minutes slower than last year (of course last year was 10 degrees cooler). While I know the inconsistency is really hurting me, I’m just not sure how to get around it.
2014: Swim (32:45); T1 (2:17); Bike (1:19); T2 (1:35); Run (55:34); 2:51:18
2013: Swim (35:23); T1 (2:04); Bike (1:14); T2 (1:24); Run 59:54; 2:53:29
Post Race: AKA the best part
After cooling down and showering we headed to town to grab lunch. The plan was to stop by the grocery store and grab ice cream - since shop was closed. But as we walked from the lunch cafe to the store, we noticed it.....
OPEN! The store was open.
It’s this the best ice cream place???
It was the best finisher price ever.
Post - Post Race:
The second best part of the town is the fact that there are waterfront bars in walking distance. Live music, beautiful views and good company make for a great night.
I know want to be here..right? So amazing.
We had already decided the front porch was much nicer and cooler than the house, it it make sense to crash out there..... two couches and a mattress later...
On to the next tri... in September. I should have plenty of time to test out those new things.... well maybe?!
Sometimes the best weekends are the ones you don't plan. Had an amazing time with my best friend I've known all my life.
Morning procrastinating
Just couldn't get out of bed early enough to ride my bike...so I'll hit it up this afternoon. My problem is that I always do some kind of exercise in the morning so I can't just get up and go. Today I felt the need to do a few planks, then the dishes, and vacuum my house. Pretty sure dusting may happen before I get out the door....not sure how all this cleaning got in there, but it might be the type A person in me....
Summer may be bringing heat and humidity but at least the sun comes up earlier so swimming at the crack of dawn doesn't feel quite so early. #nofilter #morningworkout #triathlontraining #swimming
After making some tough decisions this is definitely a good reminder to just let go of second guesses or questions.
So it’s been awhile since I’ve written anything here. Life has gotten busy - work, travel, training - and I’m hoping to be back blogging more now.
Last week I was in Guatemala, kicking back and relaxing. This week I was racing my very first sprint triathlon. Some how I jumped straight to a half ironman and never really looked back. I’m definitely more of a distance girl, it takes me a while to get in my groove, but I needed a tune up race and this is a fun local one.
It was great to race with friends and see a few others I was expecting there. Overall, the race went well. I would have like to been faster - but honestly consistency in my training is my downfall. It’s hard to make progress when I’m out of town so much. I know others do it, but I just can’t seem to make it happen for me.
So here’s the race run down:
Swim 18:32
The water was 74, and my game time decision was to forgo the wetsuit. I know the many reasons to wear one, but I just hate mine. I’ve never liked swimming in a wetsuit, and I’ve looked back at times and mine have been nearly the same from year to year with one or without one. For me it was a good swim, I stayed on course (a first) and swam without stopping to catch my breath. Was 33 out of 42... which for me is good. I’m a slow swimmer and have yet to figure out how to get faster. I really only have one swim speed.
T1: 2:03
Rocked first place in my age group for T1!! Of course pretty much everyone else was taking off a wetsuit, but whatever, I’ll take it. I had thought about doing some fancy mounts and dismounts for this race, but with a big hill coming straight out of transition I wasn’t comfortable making my debut here.
Bike 50:16
Hit my watch and come to find out that I was already in run mode....oops. Had to do the ride by feel. Was trying to balance pushing, high cadence and keeping things in check for the run. I thought I was pushing pretty well, but time was a bit slower than I had hoped for. Maybe I backed off in some places, maybe that is all I had in me for a hot and humid day.
T2: 1:42
One day need to actually get speed laces.... and try the flying dismount... maybe next race.
Run: 27:31
Of course there is a hill coming out of transition into the run. My goal was to keep a solid pace up the hill. Without an idea on time or pace I was focused on keeping up with the person in front of me who looked strong. It definitely got hot on the course, and I could feel it taking a toll, but refused to back off. I thought I was pushing pretty hard - the watch pace was saying 8:15s... but clearly that was not the case. I have to say I’m disappointed with my run time. I really did think I was pushing much faster than this.
Overall, it was a fun race and I executed a solid plan. I’m not sure I’ll do another sprint - I liked the short swim, but needed more on the bike and run to get my “game on”.
Hoping to push the next race, but with a lot of travel next week, I’m not sure I’ll have a solid week of training in beforehand.
It's race time! First sprint tri ever...first race of the season. @speedsherpa found those hills to burn a few matches on.
