“You fought wolves? Wow, that’s actually pretty impressive. All I can do is sit there and take it. I might ask Roderick if I could sign up for some kickboxing lessons. Then I could be there next to you fighting.”

“What?” Roderick glanced around, and inhaled, they were alone and Connor was clearly scared, which meant one thing. “Connor! Open this door right now! What the hell?” he tried his best not to growl “I’m  not going to hurt you, you dumbass! You’re scared of me now?” he knocked again “Connor, open the door, you’re being stupid, I’m trying to get you home safely!”

Hearing him knock again, Connor was tempted to unlock the door. He placed his hand over the doorknob before hesitating again. “I-I can’t. What were...w-what were you doing just now?” He knew the longer he kept the door shut, the angrier Roderick would become, which prevented him from wanting to open it even more.

“Stepping in? Are you shitting me? Why would I do that? What if he threw me next?”

“You’re alright man,” Gage said as the other’s breathing started to increase. “Hey, Connor,” he said as he moved to kneel in front of him. Gage, the walking equivalent of a human panic attack, seemed to thrive when times were intense, when others needed support. He was careful not to touch the boy, his own master’s rules being what they were, but he did try to get his attention away from his fear. “Connor, look at me, alright? Take a deep breath in through your nose and push it out of your mouth slow. We’re safe, you and me. They’re not supposed to be fucking with Covaire citizens, any of us, slaves included. Besides I think we have the two craziest masters in the entire city, we’re gonna be okay.”

Connor closed his eyes, listening to Gage’s words as he spoke to him. Opening them again, he looked into his eyes and immediately felt his heart rate begin to slow. Breathing in through his nose, he exhaled slowly, repeating the process a few more times before finally settling down. He felt at ease with the other slave by his side, his mere presence providing instant comfort. “I saw…I saw someone…torn a part. Human like me, just ripped to pieces. L-Like he was paper.” The horrific scene played in the boy’s head like a broken record. The more he thought about it, the more traumatized he became. Tears swelled up in his eyes as he brought his knees to his chest, wrapping his arms around them firmly. “He begged, screamed…he looked at me right before…”

“I am,” Cameron nodded on his way up from the chair and towards the kitchen. “Your point?” He smiled at the act of locking the door. If anyone wanted to get in, that wouldn’t stop them, but he decided not to share those views with the boy. “Shaking and crying in a corner due to fear is not my style. And if I am doomed to die today, why would I want to spend my last hours like that?”

“That’s a very positive way of putting it. Except when you’re being followed, you don’t really have time for anything else.” His paranoia quickly set in as he turned to the window and pulled the curtain aside slightly, hoping to see whoever it was he saw was gone. Nowhere in sight, he backed away, although he still didn’t feel safe enough to step outside. He turned his attention back to the other boy, following him into the kitchen as he rather not be alone. “I’m sorry about barging in like this. Being claimed doesn’t always stop someone.”

The wolf was already on his third sacrifice when he caught Connors scent. He’d been so focused on hunting and paying respect to this new king, that he he’d just presumed Connor would know to stay inside. “Shit…” he picked up his pace and saw his boy pushing open a door and diving inside. He was knocking on the door moments later “Connor, it’s me, come on, we need to get you home!”

Pacing back and forth in the small storage room, Connor raised his head as he immediately recognized the voice on the other side. He almost turned to unlock the door before making his way to the window to see if it really was Roderick. His eyes widened once he saw him, instantly knowing he had been partaking in the sacrifices as well. He wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to open the door, fearing Roderick wasn’t in the right state. The boy ran back to the door and placed his ear against the wood, trying to see if he could hear anything on the other side. “N-No! I-I’m not letting you in! I-I’ll make my own way home!”

Gage’s eyes went wide when he heard someone open the door he was hiding behind. “Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck,” he mumbled as he stuffed himself further back inside. It was a madhouse out there. His first instinct was to hit the guy who walked inside, but refrained. He remembered seeing him once or twice when he’d been rented by Roderick, knew he was human, and knew he looked scared. He relaxed a little after a second and shook his head. “No, you’re good.”

Locking the door behind him, Connor immediately noticed the familiar face, who seemed just as shaken up as him. Taking a deep breath, he felt relieved not only to be away from the mayhem outside but to be with someone else who knew what he had just gone through. “Thanks, I-I picked the worst day to take a walk it seems. It’s Gage right?” A sudden scream made the boy jolt away from the door, walking in deeper into the room before hitting the wall with his back. He slid down to the ground, shaking his head as his breathing grew heavier. “I-I shouldn’t be here. This shouldn’t be happening...my god I’m gonna die.”

[Zoe has seen some very disturbing things while living the city but this had to be the worse. She’s didn’t have the money to go do what the others are doing and since she was human she was a tad scared if she was honest with herself. When she heard the voice it made her jump in surprise.] Oh shit! You scared me. I guess you can hid here with me.

Connor was relieved to see another in the same state he was in. Immediately, he felt a sense a trust due to the fact that she seemed just as terrified as him. “T-Thanks. I’ve never seen it this bad. They’re all losing it. It’s like a drug. Adrenaline mixed with the need to kill. The worst combination.”

Cameron was having a safe evening (considering how other people’s night was going), sipping on some tea and reading a book while the master who had rented him was out on a task (or so he said). He knew the one who entered the house wasn’t its owner just by the sound. It was way too noisy for someone inhuman. “Not at all, no,” he said after a second, deciding the boy wasn’t much of a threat. “You might want to ditch before the master of the house gets back though, but I think that won’t be for another hour, so you have time” The slave smiled – fast and insincere – and closed his book. “Want some tea?”

Connor was confused at how calm the other boy was given what he had just seen outside. For a brief second, he questioned whether he made the right choice coming in. After the other made it clear it wasn’t his home, rather he was a slave just like him, he breathed a sigh of relief. He made sure to lock the door behind him before walking in further, a bit slower than usual. “Tea...you aware what’s going on out there?”

“Yes.” He said clearly without hesitation. “So best we avoid him as a subject all together. I’m sure our friendship can only take so much bashing of your beloved master.” Connor’s stockholme syndrome was thick. Lex say no possible way to break it so it was best to treat his brother as the elephant in the room they didn’t speak of. He growled when Connor reminded him they were brothers but quieted down to hear the story. Of course he wasn’t sure he was the best person to have such a chat with. “Maybe you’re right. The orphan probably isn’t the best person to talk to about how much you miss your family. But yes try to avoid talking to the Alpha about such trivial things. It’ll be bad for your health that’s for sure.” His attention shifted to the sky as he watched the sun begin to set. “Connor…you’re better off not worrying about the state of your family. You won’t be reunited with them anytime soon so fretting over something you’ll never know will be the death of you.”

“Sorry, I-I forgot...I didn’t mean to...” Connor realized how sore of a subject it probably was for Lex but nonetheless listened to what he had to say. He knew Lex was correct in this case but the need and desperation to know more information had grown in the past few months, it would be nearly impossible to drop it. Instead, a sense of denial swept in. “There’s always a way. This can’t just be it.” It was then that Connor came to the conclusion that he would have to tell Roderick the truth. “I mean I couldn’t give two shits about my father. He treated me and my mother like garbage. Hell, he’s the reason I even came to this place...but my mother...she was the only one who cared. I just know something happened. I-I can’t keep living like this,” his voice began to break the more thought of the possibility of his mother being dead.

Being human, the boy couldn’t help the overwhelming sense of disgust upon seeing the rituals being done throughout the city. He realized it probably wasn’t safe for him to be wandering around in the open once he saw someone be torn limb from limb inside an alley. The horrific scene nearly made Connor sick, thus making it his mission to get home as soon as possible. Walking down the sidewalk, he picked up the pace as soon as he sensed another being eyeing him from across the street. Upon turning the corner of a building, he opened the first unlocked door he could find and quickly shut it behind him. “You don’t mind if I hide in here for a bit do you?”

“I don’t know about painful, but .. uncomfortable maybe, motion sickness indulging highly possible, but yeahh, either way I don’t want to try that myself.”

“I don’t blame you. I’m having a hard time picturing it actually. You didn’t think about stepping in?”

With a roll of his eyes he waved in the air as if to deflect Connors words. “I heard that getting into bed with psychos can have the same effect. But please don’t lump my good common sense in with ‘holding a grudge’. Your master is the one who came calling for my head on a platter first…not the other way around.” Lex was starting to feel a different shift in the air between him and Connor. It wasn’t just the fact his brother had claimed his friend but that his friend was probably going to be speaking Roderick’s praise before long. And Lex wasn’t sure how long that would be something he’d stick around to hear. With a cocked brow he snickered, “Um…you’re claimed by my brother I know exactly what those dreams mean. Call it a cry for help from your own psyche. But I’m interested to hear what you think it is.”

“Are you gonna bash Roderick every time I bring him up? I understand you can’t stand the sight of him but we’re never gonna get anywhere with this.” Connor gritted his teeth together before looking away, frustrated that the tension between the two brothers was still as strong as ever. He obviously didn’t blame either of the two, seeing they both had different reasons for the resentment towards one other, however, it seemed like an endless cycle. “But Roderick is the same way whenever I bring you up. You two really are brothers. Anyways, the dreams aren’t about him. They’re about my family. My real family. I haven’t seen them in years and I never thought I’d have to worry about them again. I just know something’s wrong. I-I went to to the Alpha about it, I know it was stupid... and not surprisingly he told me he couldn’t give two shits about it.”

“You know? I’ve always known this city is preeeeetty cray, but like, using a slave as a football is kinndaa… something else. There’s throwing someone… and then there’s throwing someone.”

“Poor fella. I haven’t heard that one before. It doesn’t sound very pleasant. Actually, it sounds painful. It seems each day they find a new twisted way to treat the slaves in this city.”

Bad Dream | Roderick & Connor

Rodericks eyes scanned the boy as he sat up, sweaty and shaken, clearly in fear from his nightmares and he sighed, sitting up to and moving behind the boy. Kissing Connors shoulder he wrapped his arms around him and shook his head “It’s just a dream Romeo, your father can’t get to you here.” He smiled “And even if he showed up in this city, do you honestly believe he’d get within 100feet of you without me ripping his head off?” He asked and pulled the boy back down, to lay on top of him, where he could carry on holding the boy. “Youre alright, I wot let anyone hurt you!”

He knew Roderick was trying to comfort him, but he couldn’t shake the images of his father hurting him and his mother. What bothered Connor the most was the fact that he was having this vivid nightmares so long after he was brought to Covaire. He figured he never had to worry about his past life again. Every now and then he did think of his mother, wondering if she was okay and living a good life. It seemed she was the only person in his family that didn’t mistreat him. The boy laid back down, his body pressed against Roderick’s. The warmth of the wolf’s body easing his mood as he felt comfort in the touch. “He was going to hurt her. I couldn’t stop him.” The boy stared at a blank space on the wall, pondering his thoughts. He knew he had to keep telling himself it had only been a dream in order to stay sane. “Something isn’t right.”
