Nowhere To Hide: Costa Rica's Eco-Friendly Image Shattered
Socially Empowered Consumers Are Gunning For Costa Rica's Tourism Industry In An Effort To Counter Corruption And Free Captain Paul Watson, Founder of Sea Shepherd.
For over decade Costa Rica has enjoyed a position as the leading-edge eco-friendly tourism destination. That position (and the revenue generated by it) is now in serious jeopardy due to the Costa Rican government's lack of conscience regarding the environment, lack of respect for international anti-poaching laws and, most notably, their unimaginable ignorance about the power of average people, in a globally connected society, to expose corruption and impose their own economic sanctions against those responsible.
In this case, Costa Rica has brazenly (and stupidly) flaunted the ugly truth of their illegal shark-finning practices and their cozy, yet corrupt, relationships with Japan (another barbaric offender) and the Taiwanese shark-fin mafia operating in Costa Rica by issuing a baseless warrant for the arrest and extradition of Captain Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd.
Last Saturday, Captain Watson was at a benefit for Wild Aid, another revered conservation organization, promoted by the likes of Sir Richard Branson and Bo Derek. He was joined by other respected conservationists like Louie Psihoyos who brought us The Cove. On Monday, Paul was in jail in Germany due to a baseless, politically motivated arrest warrant issued by Costa Rica (in service of Japan's agenda to cover-up and continue illegal finning, poaching and dolphin slaughter operations).
News of Captain Watson's arrest was slow to spread and generally confined to Sea Shepherd's website and two Facebook petitions to "Free Paul Watson" and "Boycott Germany (Costa Rica later added)." These demonstrations of public support for him to be released and have the charges dropped was impressive. While the signatures created pressure on Germany, the thing they lacked was consequence for Costa Rica.
That all changed early Thursday when Boycott Costa Rica Tourism for Sea Shepherd was formed. The Facebook group is rapidly gaining high-caliber support and illustrates the real threat to Costa Rica's corrupt government - economic consequences from which they have no power to escape.

It is a stunningly smart and simple premise - in the era of conscious consumption, people anywhere and everywhere can impose economic sanctions against any brand (or country) they wish - without the blessing or permission of a governing entity. If corporations, governments and other organizations behave appallingly (as Costa Rica has), someone's going to find out and they will face consequences - period.
Costa Rica's image is already taking a beating. Audience comments clearly demonstrate the grave reality of this tourism boycott: "Suffice it to say that if CR prosecutes Watson it may spell the end of their eco-tourism economy." from Brad Anthony on Inside Costa Rica and "I think all environmental tourists should stop spending their money in Costa Rica forever if Watson is charged and put on trial in Costa Rica. This is a travesty perpetrated by Japan, and carried out by Germany and Costa Rica."
If Costa Rica acts quickly and responsibly by dropping all charges against Captain Watson issuing an apology and granting him immunity, they can probably mitigate the damage. If not, news of their hypocrisy will spread among their most valuable tourist prospects. Those people have a great deal of integrity, wealth and influence and will happily take their adventure and their money to neighboring Panama the next time they're craving a Central American getaway.
*Sea Shepherd: Sea Shepherd's Mission Statement
Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.
Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.
WildAid's mission is to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes by reducing demand through public awareness campaigns and providing comprehensive marine protection.
The illegal wildlife trade is estimated to be worth over $10 billion (USD) per year and has drastically reduced many wildlife populations around the world. Just like the drug trade, law and enforcement efforts have not been able to resolve the problem. Every year, hundreds of millions of dollars are spent protecting animals in the wild, yet virtually nothing is spent on stemming the demand for wildlife parts and products. WildAid is the only organization focused on reducing the demand for these products, with the strong and simple message: when the buying stops, the killing can too.
With an unrivaled portfolio of celebrity ambassadors and global network of media partners, we are able to deliver high-impact, culturally-sensitive multimedia campaigns, leveraging well over $100 million (USD) in pro-bono media support, and reaching up to 1.5 billion people every week.
