THIS IS ACTUALLY FACTUAL AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED MORE

“Knowing that they were losing “valuable product” due to their slaves’ propensity to swim, slave owners began taking drastic steps to protect their property. One of these steps was to instill a fear of the water by dunking disobedient slaves in water until they nearly drowned and by creating fear through stories of creatures living in the water. Thus it didn’t take long to excise or destroy the West African swimming tradition from African- American culture. The Jim Crow laws that were enacted after The Civil War prohibited blacks from the popular seaside resorts in places like Atlantic City, N.J. and Revere Beach, Mass. And by the 20th Century, as the swimming pool began to gain in popularity in the United States, the color line prohibited blacks from enjoying this pleasant recreational skill.
In addition, self-segregation also played a role in limiting those of African ancestry from getting in the water. I remember my Aunt saying to stay away from the pool because, “black folk don’t swim.””
Such a long and consistent history of anti-Blackness and swimming. Long before police openly assaulted little black girls in McKinney, GoodWhitePeople™ were enforcing White Supremacy and segregating swimming pools.
Motel manager, James “Jimmy” Brock, pouring acid into a swimming pool to drive black people away from a “Swim In” protest, in St. Augustine, Florida on June 18, 1964.
Next time you hear someone ask questions like, “Why don’t black people swim?” Or “Why are so many black people afraid of dogs?” And, “Why are there do so many black people live in poverty?”…..let ‘em know that those aren’t coincidences. These things didn’t just happen naturally, all on their own. There’s a reason for it, and you don’t have to be an historian to know they’re all interconnected through slavery, endemic racism and persistently racist cultural norms.

Throwback to this iconic tweet
It pretty much boils down to “I never had to think about it until it affected me personally”
Same anon as before. I don't mean legitimate criticism against white or straight people. I meant things like "whites think water is a spice". What does anyone get from prejudices and hateful comments like that, even if they were true?
White people finding water spicy is a mild joke targeted at a group of privileged individuals who regularly don’t have to deal with stereotypes that actually hurt them. While white people have to deal with stereotypes about not being able to stomach spicy food, blacks and LatinXs have to deal with stereotypes about being lazy, thieves, drug addicts, etc. While straight people deal with stereotypes of dressing poorly, gay people deal with stereotypes about being sexually deviant and ill with STIs.
Trust me, those poor straight white people will survive a joke about how yogurt is spicy. Chill.
and stereotypes about marginalized folks are used to OPPRESS THEM and throughout history have resulted in or been used to justify their rape, torture, enslavement and murder. i think most people can agree stereotypes suck because they reduce complex beings down to a few random bullet points, and no one wants to be on the receiving end of that, BUT it’s important to remember there’s a difference between stereotypes created by MAJORITY groups used to maintain their status in society versus stereotypes created by MARGINALIZED groups in response to their frustration with their status in society. punching up vs punching down
Happy #blackoutDay
I can feel myself getting happier as the days go on and it's the greatest feeling ever. Nothing is better than self improvement.

The secret to staying motivated: focus on what you’re doing, not what you’re trying to achieve.

I used to be focused and I lost a lot of weight but lately I just haven't been as focused and I've been slipping back into my old eating habits, how do I stay on track, please help :) xx
make a list with all the reasons you want to lose weight and be healthy. update it every day. make an inspirational poster and put it up on your wall so you can see it first thing you wake up. ignore negativity. repeat to yourself “i can do it”. it will become a habit and you will get used to being healthy and aware of the things you eat and avoid. it won’t be a punishment, it will be a reward because the reflection in the mirror will reflect a confident, beautiful girl capable of anything. you CAN do this!!! yes you can. go for it! ♥
