Gay marriage was voted on by the Supreme Court, and, even with Trump choosing three SCOTUS judges, Presidents cannot overturn the SC’s rulings. The SC takes overturning previous rulings VERY seriously. It’s not something they’ll do all willy-nilly. Someone will need to come forward with new evidence and plead a new case, and, while it can happen, I highly doubt it will.
Gay marriage is safe, Trump couldn’t touch it if he wanted to.
I cannot believe all the fear-mongering and straight up misinformation being thrown around. A few days ago someone told me Trump could undo the marriage ruling because it was an executive order. I had no idea how to respond other than to tell them that’s not true and then just disengage when they insisted I was wrong.
Without the electoral college, the determining factor of the elections would be California, Chicago and New York just because they have more people concentrated in one area. Our system is the best of the best and the people spoke. I’m hurt as well as most of America but the best thing we can do is keep an open mind, accept, and move on.
So what? Why does it matter if the majority of votes come from one area? If most of the people in the country want one person to be president, then that person should be president. Why should it matter where they’re from?
And that’s not even the reason the college was made in the first place. It was made for 2 reasons.
1. The founding fathers didn’t trust the citizens. They thought the citizens were too uneducated to make a good choice.
And 2. It’s easier to count the votes of a small group of people all in one place rather than millions across the country when there’s no cars or internet.
In today’s age, neither of those reasons are valid anymore. There is no good reason for the electoral college to exist. If the majority of people want someone as president, that person should be president.
As a non-American person, when I understood the voting system you had, I was in shock. I just couldn’t believe how un-democratic the system is. The most democratic way of voting is counting every vote there is an then see who got the majority. It won’t assure you the best candidate win, but at least you know your vote directly counts.
Perhaps, but without the electoral college so many states would have no power. It is about States rights. We are the United STATES of America. The electoral college guarantees that each state gets an equal say according to its population, much like our House of Representatives. And it DOES matter, not letting the majority of people who live in one place get the most say – why do you think we LEFT BRITAIN in the first place? To make sure ALL PEOPLE get an equal say.
Whether or not you like the electoral college, it’s not as if it were a surprise suddenly foisted upon the country on November 8th. It’s been here since the beginning, both parties knew the rules, and Democrats even went into election night rather confident of victory. The bellyaching we are hearing about the electoral college is solely because Clinton lost, not about principle. It would be Trump supporters complaining about it instead had Trump won the popular vote and Clinton won the electoral vote.
@my-name-is-long those are not the reasons why the founders instituted the electoral college. The electoral college was created to protect states’ rights, which was a huge sticking point while they were trying to ratify the Constitution. The smaller states wanted to have just as much of a voice in elections as the more populous states. In order to do that, the election is weighted so that three small geographical locations don’t get to decide every election for the entire country. In this way, a person in rural Iowa has just as much of a voice as someone in NYC.
@why-can-t-i-be-sherlock the reason you don’t understand our voting system is because you wrongly assume we’re a democracy. We’re not, we’re a Constitutional Republic. Democracy is nothing more than mob rule, which is what the electoral college is there to prevent. Don’t feel bad though, most Americans don’t know this either.
Yes it does matter because if a large population is concentrated in specific areas (ex: urban areas) then those areas are only going to think of themselves and vote for their own interests even if it isn’t in the interest of rural or suburban areas. This is similar to why we have a bicameral legislature. We have a senate to make sure big states or more populous states would not hold more power over small states or less populous states. And we have a House of Representatives to make sure the small states don’t have more power over the larger states since the number of representatives you get is determined by your state population. While with the senate, every state gets the same number of representatives.
This however isn’t even the number one reason why we have an electoral college. We have one because a PURE or DIRECT democracy is mob rule. Think of it as a very, very large oligarchy. Something Bernie Sanders talks against all the time. Pure democracies are tyrannical for the same reason oligarchies are tyrannical (since they are the same thing). And given how we are a country that is against tyranny in all forms, we decided NOT to have a pure democracy and instead to have a democratic republic that is constitution based.

I seriously wonder how any lgbt person can find fault with this. Like he’s not saying “no muslim can enter america.” He’s SAYING that he doesn’t want people from Muslim run countries, who believe that gay and trans people are worthy of punishment simply for being gay or trans. Like surely that’s a good thing. He doesn’t want you to die. Srsly.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that Trump has been pro LGBT for years? I read that somewhere, does anyone have sources contradicting and/or supporting it?
He’s the most gay friendly GOP candidate ever. But there are LGBT people freaking out on Facebook and twitter that Trump’s America will be full of gay bashing, etc, etc. It has no basis in reality, it’s just a bizarre conspiracy theory they’ve cooked up.
My main question at this point is, do his cabinet members have to pass the same test? Is he gonna deport his own VP because let me tell you he has my full support if he does.
To reiterate: If Trump makes Pence take a test, concludes that he’s too homophobic to stay in america, and ships him off to the middle of the Syrian war zone, I will become a Trump supporter. hell I’d even vote to reelect him if he didn’t do anything terrible enough to outweigh that. Yes! I’m all for a female president but I thought that with Hillary, we might never see a second one. She is so corrupt that she would reflect badly on women and honestly I want the first female president to be someone respectable who would do good by our country.
