Having an adult child gives you the right to say the following: to online scammers: “well, my daughter says not to give you my information." to telemarketers: “well, my daughter says not to talk to you anymore." to peddlers on the street: “well, my daughter says you’re a scam, bye." to all of the above: “my daughter told me to get all the information of people like you."

Juror B37 is the same lady who, after I was born, looked at my mother and said with glee, “why - he looks like a *white* baby!"

i know Juror B37, she is the girl who i grew up with....

i know Juror B37, she is the girl I grew up with in the south. she is the one who tells me that “she just loves everybody" in the her southern drawl while calling me every degrading name to her other white friends when she is not around. She is the one who eggs on the white boys when they mock black girls in school (though he dreams about us at night). and the one who fetishizes black boys, while simultaneously degrading and devaluing their lives ( something she would never admit in public). she is the one that believes daddy’s money, and her whiteness, not only protect her, but make her superior. that she deserves more than me, that she is entitled to more than me, that her childhood and preteen years are defined by being better, prettier, more valuable, than me because of her blonde hair and white skin.

this girl becomes Juror B37 as an adult. Supported, and empowered by years of systemic racism and classism, defined by the “othering" of black women and men. deluded into thinking that this is the way things should be. liking blackness only in as much as it provides her access to pop culture, more black men to ogle, and more black women to degrade and taking every chance to reinforce that she is prettier, nicer, more southern, more entitled, more loved, and more respected in any way she can.

this girl becomes the woman and mother who teaches her little girls to begin this process again, teaching them to degrade the Rachels and Trayvons of the world in order to assert her power. She takes their lives by mocking, by devaluing, by supporting white men, by standing her ground on white womanhood.
