We celebrated our last evening in Whistler at Araxi Restaurant and Oyster Bar. We ordered a shrimp cocktail, two oysters, fresh house made pasta with wild mushrooms and spinach, and veal tenderloin with tortellini. It was all incredible! The pasta was cooked perfectly and very flavorful and creamy. The veal was tasty and the tortellini was unique and delicious. We were pleasantly surprised and will definitely be back the next time we are in Whistler!
It doesn't look like much, but it sure is sweet! We tried maple taffy at the Whistler farmer's market. A bite is all we could really handle, but it was a fun treat!
We went to lunch at Merlin's. We split a poutine and a bacon burger with a side of the most amazing onion rings (the real reason we went here). It was the first time I had poutine and wasn't super impressed with it, but it may have been because it wasn't as hot as Ben said they normally serve it. Regardless, it was fun to try!
We celebrated our anniversary in Whistler and ate at Sidecut in the Four Seasons. We’ve been dreaming about this steak since last year, and was very excited to come back. I ordered the 6 oz. beef tenderloin and Ben got the 12 oz. ribeye with an Alaskan King crab leg. We also got the corn and jalapeño gratin. Everything was pretty much perfect. The steaks were just as good as we remembered them. Ben even thinks the ribeye is the best steak he ever had. So if you’re ever in Whistler, be sure to check this place out!
We went to Buzz's Steakhouse in Kailua to celebrate my parents' anniversary. Ben and I had never been there, so we were excited to check it out. My mom and I split the shrimp scampi, Ben ordered the crab stuffed ahi, and my dad ordered the 13 oz prime rib. Our entrees came with a salad bar or a soup. The dishes were pretty tasty, and it was a fun experience to check out a famous restaurant right in our backyard. Ben and I still talk about how fun this dinner was!
Tried a new dessert in Hawaii after a delicious ramen dinner at Yotteko ya. We went to Snow Factory and my mom and I shared the mango and lychee bowl, which was topped with mochi balls, lychee jelly, mango pop, and condensed milk. Ben ordered a white chocolate bowl that he topped with crushed Oreos. It was a fun change up from shave ice and perfectly refreshing after ramen. I would definitely go back!
We were in Seattle the other weekend and had to stop at our FAVORITE cake shop, Simply Desserts. We have had a LOT of cake, and this places is beyond comparison. The glare makes it hard to see all of the bites of heaven in the case, but trust us, everything here is amazing. We settled on their chocolate white chocolate cake and their strawberry white chocolate cake, complete with a glass of cold milk of course. The cakes are perfectly moist and the flavor is unparalleled. We enjoyed every single morsel and will continue to dream of having this shop in Portland.
Oops! I realized we forgot one of our big meals in the Seychelles. We ate at a local restaurant, Grann Kaz, which is set in a plantation house. The food was a blend of modern Seychellois spirit and the island's French and English heritage. We had the blue marlin and pineapple salad (Ben said this was the most delicious fish he had ever tasted), the blue crab bisque (not our favorite - tasted somewhat like just crab and water), red snapper with lemongrass, the taye chicken curry, and coconut nougat, rum, and raisin ice cream for dessert. Overall, I don't think we were used to the Seychellois flavors. It was a lot less flavorful than we're used to, but it was a once in a lifetime experience to eat here!
I was craving a refreshing chicken recipe so I tried making chicken piccata with fettuccine. I was surprised with how quickly I could whip this up, and it hit the spot! The lemon and capers were perfect for a hot summer night. We'll be making this again!
Tried a new recipe - balsamic roast pork tenderloins from the Food Network (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/balsamic-roast-pork-tenderloins-recipe.html). They were really easy and quick to make and tasted delicious with all of the fresh herbs! It was definitely a hit and will be a recipe we make again!
Probably one of my favorite meals in the Seychelles! We walked to Treasure Cove Hotel and Restaurant while we were waiting for the ferry to take us to Silhouette Island and split the fish and chips. The fish was so fresh and tasty, and the fries were surprisingly good too. The homemade tartar sauce perfectly complemented the fish as well.
Sometimes, you just need an enormous amount of wings from Fire on the Mountain after a long day of work. We had sweet BBQ sauce (top) and buffalo medium sauce (bottom). As usual, Fire on the Mountain didn’t disappoint! This is a staple in our house when we’re craving wings!
Uber had a Valentine’s special that delivered a free meal from Chef'd to cook. We made the recipe (beef bourguignon) with mashed potatoes and green beans, and it was delicious! It took a bit of prep and cook time (about 45 minutes), but we were pleasantly surprised with how delicious it was! The meal also came with a red rose and a mini red velvet bundt cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes (our favorite!). All in all, it was a delicious fancy meal that was fun to cook together!
Ben read about a top rated bento place right by our apartment (Chef Naoko Bento Cafe), so we had to check it out! We ordered a ton katsu bento and a chicken teriyaki bento. Both were delicious and very authentic! While the hours make it hard to go here often, we have been back a few times since whenever we're craving some good Japanese food.
We are back! After a hiatus due to busy season and travel, the blog is up and running again. While we neglected to update you these last few months, we have still continued our food adventures. This was dinner we had with friends at Higgins, a farm to table restaurant a few blocks from our place. We split a deliciously refreshing salad topped with steak tartare. Yum! For our entrees, I had the salmon special with brussel sprouts and Ben ordered a pork dish. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and went home quite full and satisfied!
Our last dinner of the weekend was from, you guessed it, Leaky Roof! Ben originally wanted to try their dinner menu, so we gave it a go. I was quite embarrassed to be at the same restaurant so much in one weekend, but Ben was happy to make this gastro pub more like home. I ordered the blackened chicken and mango salad and Ben got the shepherd's pie. My salad was quite tasty, but a little on the salty side. It was both of our first times having shepherd's pie, and it was great! We loved it, and it made for great leftovers!
Last weekend we went to breakfast at Leaky Roof two days in a row. I know, that's crazy. But trust me, it gets worse (stay tuned!). I had the classic eggs Benedict and Ben had the Yellow Card, which was ham, grilled onion, Swiss and cheddar cheese on a buttermilk biscuit. Both were amazing and kept us full for quite a long time!
