You see, in our movieverse Christofern isn’t just a plant- he’s a bio-engineered creation of Garmadon, created from Garmadon’s DNA, a random blood donor (who happens to be Vinny of NGTV News), and some plant DNA accidentally thrown into the mix. So in essence he’s oni/dragon/human/plant. He lives in the volcano and just kinda hangs out around there.
He serves as one of our movieverse versions of the bizzaros (of course we had to give Lloyd and Nya some too), though they weren’t all created from the same source here.
This is movie!Christofern!!
- Snarky, sarcastic, often bored; does not give a rat's ass about anything
- Can photosynthesis like a plant but is embarrassed about it.
- Technically can semi-shapeshift but doesn't care too; arms, hooves, horns, and four arms out at all time
- Is technically Green (Lloyd)’s half-brother through Garmadon; neither Green nor Koko know about him

wu has heard the phrase "it's all wu's fault" echoing in his head for thousands of years so it's so ingrained that everything bad that happens to him or the people around him is his own fault even when it's not
which is why whenever he's blamed for something he'll just stand there and not defend himself because he thinks they're right

Now, truth be told, I’ve always loved the idea of Wu having a love interest. His interactions with Misako are honestly cute.
I just wish it wasn’t with Lloyd’s mother of all people you know? The way it was handled certainly didn’t do either of them any favors with the fandom.

you know i just realized wu is an introvert.
we already know he's self critical to a fault and has a habit of pushing people away so they don't get hurt because of him, but i just realized that he's also probably not used to mass socialization.
he's spent thousands of years with it just being him, his brother, and their father. then their father died, leaving the two of them alone. then garmadon presumably moved out after marrying misako so wu was probably alone in the monastery for a lot longer than we thought.
he has all of maybe 3 living friends outside the ninja and garmadon. two of them were thought to be dead for YEARS, and the third is his brother's wife.
now he's around tons of people on a regular basis and i don't think he's quite used to that.
plus you also have his past experiences with other relationships to consider, which leads into his self-criticizing tendencies and probably his mentality of "i tried this and it ended badly so i'm not doing this again"
his ONE (1) canon attempt at a romantic relationship ended with his brother getting the girl first so he's never pursued a relationship afterwards as far as we know because if the one person he loved chose the evil brother over him then maybe he's the problem.
his ONE attempt at raising a child ended with the kid lashing out over ONE disagreement, leading said kid to running away and getting himself killed, so wu never took in kai and nya after their parents disappeared because he feared making them hate him and getting them killed too, because we ALL KNOW he blames himself for what happened to morro.
i mean, did wu ever actually KNOW for a fact morro was dead before lloyd got possessed? did he just assume the worst after he couldn't find morro again? how long had it been since morro left, even? the timeline's a bit murky but if wu met morro while garmadon was still studying under chen then morro would've happened BEFORE the serpentine war.
wu probably spent the last FORTY YEARS not knowing what became of the boy he cared for like a son, only to get confirmation in the WORST way that he'd been dead for a very, very long time.
and then you have morro's ultimate fate at the end of season 5. wu screaming his name while still reaching out for him as he dissolves still bothers me because that's still his son and he's lost him a second time.
where was i going with this, i had a point?
oh yeah.
wu's not good with large groups of people because he's not used to being around them for long periods of time. and he's not good with kids because he's scared of messing up with them.
extremely sheltered upbringing + trying something new going very badly + strong self-blame = awkward old man with a fear of socialization
and now, in hdwgh, the monastery has like 20+ people living there now, and a good amount of them kids. wu has NO idea what to do in this situation.

I find it kind of crazy how Ninjago accidentally gave every main character a badass mom because somebody in the writers room didn't think women were important to mention until season 7-14 and by that time they needed a backstory character who was a powerful ancient warrior and they'd used up all their dad characters.
Like, Lilly was most certainly not meant to have been. They made one joke where she existed in s1 and then forgot that she was supposedly alive in Cole's true potential episode because they were too focused on the father-son storyline. Then, they sudddenly told us elemental powers are inherited and clearly they couldn't come from Lou, so wouldn't you know it, it's time to do something with the dead mom.
They told us that Jay was adopted and decided to immediately give us his father's name and zero material on his mom, and in doing so, they almost certainly by accident promised to give us Superpowered Female Elemental Master of Lightning and Badass Mom Libber in order to explain how he came to have his powers.
They established Kai and Nya as orphans, briefly brought up Ray as a character like four or five times before his actual appearance in s7, and then they decided to actually give Nya a place on the team and they were like "well, I guess we gotta do something with their mom at some point" and made BOTH Maya and Ray to be masters.
I just find it amazing how all mothers in Ninjago are canonically war heroes with superpowers, because don't you try to tell me that shit would've happened in Seasons 1 and 2 when they still sidelined Nya in every important battle. They mentioned Ray a bit in the pilots and later seasons and I bet they had early plans for him and Kai, but I can't imagine them doing something like Seabound back then, when they couldn't even handle making Nya a ninja. Heck, Pixal didn't even have a body. You think we would've gotten badass ancient warrior mom elemental master of earth Lilly in 2011?

You know, I’ve always been pissed and dumbfounded by how so many people blame Wu for the Devourer biting Garmadon. But recently I’ve been even more pissed about it and didn’t know why until now.
Beyond the fact that it should be common fucking sense that it was a tragedy that was no one’s fault but the Overlord’s, it’s also because I have two younger brothers myself. Whom are now basically the same age Wu and Garmadon were when the bite happened.
It’s so easy for me to imagine that same incident happening to them. I can picture it happening in our backyard. The boys innocently messing around, loosing a toy over the wall, the older brother going to get it while the younger stays behind in fear of disobeying and angering our father (who can be strict when it comes to rules).
And just- the thought of my youngest brother being called a coward, a pussy, lazy, for a tragedy he couldn’t possibly anticipate, for acting like the CHILD he is, has me SEETHING with rage.
Now every time I see someone unironically blame Wu for the bite -labeling him the root cause of Garmadon’s evil and using degrading language while doing so- for a moment, I imagine my baby brother in his place. And it only reinforces how fucking stupid (and quite frankly appalling) it is to blame Wu, a child who had absolutely no way of knowing what would happen, who simply acted the way a child does, who simply wanted to obey his father’s rules and never asked Garmadon to get the sword for him.
ESPECIALLY when Crystalized gave us a SOLID BLAMEWORTHY PARTY in form of the Overlord. Who literally bragged about controlling the Devourer and making Garmadon evil for his own ends. Literally had a whole "IT WAS ME BARRY" moment.
The fact that these fuckers choose to blame the clueless child in this situation instead of the one that DIRECTLY CAUSED the tragedy with MALICIOUS INTENT will never not piss me off. And it’s honestly another reason this stupid ass take enrages me even more now. I’m never trusting these people to argue in good faith.
personally the fsm was more at fault than anything. he let his two maybe 8-year-old boys play with REAL swords and his ass was NOT watching them at all
i mean uses that exact same sword centuries later as an ACTUAL weapon and he SAYS it's the same one from before. GARMADON recognizes it from before.
neither boy would've had to go outside the walls to retrieve it if their father had actually been doing his job and, you know, watching his kids? he was RIGHT THERE and not paying attention to anything but polishing his own toys
No hate to the FSM but yeah I can understand that point of view. Like, if you don’t want your kids to leave the monastery you should probably keep a closer eye on them, especially since they’re directly within your line of sight. And Garmadon was taking more risks by that point soooo- ƪ(‾ε‾“)ʃ
That said, I personally don’t hold it against the FSM family at all because realistically speaking they would’ve been screwed over anyway. The Overlord wanted a vessel. One of the sons of the FSM to be his pawn and facilitate his return. (Whether or not it HAD to be Garmadon is unclear). So even if the sword had never been lost, the Overlord would’ve simply poisoned Garmadon (because it still very easily could’ve been Garmadon) another day. Probably the next time the FSM let his sons leave the monastery.
The family was doomed from the moment the Overlord targeted them.
obviously I don't think Wu is homophobic or transphobic in any regard but I do think some people overcorrect and act like he's the #1 Woke Grandpa of all time and that calling him a bigot is complete crazy talk as if a major plot point of the first couple seasons isn't him being racist and spreading racist ideas. like it's not subtle and he has canonically held these racist beliefs for thousands of years
I find it interesting that, to my knowledge, at least, the prejudice Wu has in the early seasons seems to only extend to Serpentine.
Like, we see him interact with other intelligent humanoids (like Nineko, even before knowing she was formerly human) in the Spinjitzu Brothers books just fine, no issues there. It’s just serpentine he’s got an issue with.
Out of universe this is probably because, say it with me now: Ninjago wasn’t supposed to last this long so other intelligent humanoids weren’t a factor in the writing until MUCH later on. But in-universe? Idk maybe Wu has more trauma from Aspheera than we initially thought. Making things even more confusing is Wu himself being 0% human. Something something stones and glass houses.
Anyway agreed that he’s definitely trying to unpack his beliefs. Though he’s absolutely the family member that said something dicey in conversation over dinner before and everyone else just stared for a solid 15 seconds before someone says something.
