I need everyone who is not in nursing to understand how deeply important the Digby/Emma scene is. Because those were the tasks that made me fall in love with nursing more than i already did. Calculating dosages and placing IV’s feels cool, but choosing to do those tasks that are not medically necessary make you a good nurse. Recognising the importance of it makes the difference. I have spent two separate shifts combing and washing out EEG remnants from an old lady she was transferred to my unit, i have shaved the head of an autistic man who isolated himself so much that his hair couldn’t be saved. I have given extensive showers, combed hair, tried to revive curls with the supplies we had(difficult, i tell you) and it made me the happiest to see these people feel comfortable in their skin again. Because as a nurse it doesn’t matter to me how you look, whether that is messy or sick or without makeup or your hair combed. What matters is if you are okay with looking like that; if not, well let’s get to work. So often nurses don’t do these tasks because they aren’t medically necessary, but i like to think that feeling better about yourself makes healing easier. I have been the person who’s hair needed to be braided after heart surgery, i have had someone comb it for me while i cried because it was so hard not being able to do it myself. I’ll never forget that kindness, and Digby also won’t forget the kindness that Emma showed him. This is the the part of nursing that isn’t shown, the part where you take the extra time if you can even if the patient would be fine without it. Because it does make a difference.
