Presentation Reflections.

Everyone’s presentations were good and a lot of work was put into everyone’s genres. I had three presentations that I really enjoyed: the one about larping, the diversity in Disney princesses and the one about LGBT community. I enjoyed the larping one because it was really unexpected and really funny to look at. It is a concept no one would even consider so I appreciated that someone went outside of the box on that one. The presentation about Disney not having much diversity among its princesses was great. I have noticed that there are not many princess of color or ethnic backgrounds and it is a problem for younger girls growing up. They need to see that a princess can be beautiful and smart no matter what race or ethnicity they are. Lastly I really enjoyed the presentation on the LGBT community. I am a huge supporter of the gay community and believe they deserve to be treated equally and receive the same rights as everyone else. I am happy that it had so much circulation because this an ongoing issue that is barely being fixed. Hopefully the person who worked on it keeps it up. Overall everyone did well but those were my favorites of the day. I liked this project and I liked this class, when it was not driving me coo coo bananas.

Presentations- Reflection

It was really great to see everyone’s presentations and learn how they marketed their campaign.  Seeing some other people’s failures was a relief because I came in thinking that I was the only one with a failed genre.  It was hard to pick a favorite- I had a few.  One of my favorite was Maria’s.  I was so surprised to see that someone campaigned for Uber, it just seems so random to me but I thought she went about it really well.  Although I did attentively follow each presentation, this one really caught my interest.  Normally I always weigh my options on whether or not I should take a cab or call an Uber, and I usually don’t consider all of the benefits that Maria provided in her infographic.  It organized everything I already knew about Uber and put them into a single visual that reminded me why I always prefer Uber.  When I first saw it on Twitter, I read the whole thing because first it caught my eye due to the layout and pictures; second the actual information was written in a way that kept me wanting to read more.  In addition, she was the only one that used a petition as a genre which I thought was really creative, and maybe with a little more marketing I think it could be effective to the cause.  On top of that, she was also the only one who created an interactive quiz.  Having such interactive genres is what brought her success, I wish I would have thought to branch out and use things like that.  I understood why she chose to focus her project on Miami rather than Tallahassee.  If Miami is anything like its neighboring county, Broward (where I live) Uber has been banned and having issues keeping its business in the area.  On the other hand, I haven’t heard much controversy about Uber leabing Tallahassee.  I loved her creativity and I think she did a great job with this project.  Everyone’s projects were inspiring and enlightening in different ways.

Presentation Reflection

I can’t choose just one presentation. They were all so amazing. One of my favorites was definitely the LGBT project, as that is a very important community to me. Not to mention, he totally went viral. After seeing how many followers and views he got, I wondered why I even tried to make a twitter. This is also a very popular community right now. I thought it was great that this was used.

Another presentation I loved was the Disney diversity one. I am obsessed with Disney (and, to be honest, pretty jealous I didn’t think of that idea). I never actually realized that this was an issue. I’m also pretty bummed I didn’t see this campaign before the presentation, or I totally would have helped promote it.

Assembling a Multigenre Project

A multigenre project is a collection of three or more genre competitions built around a single topic…. hmmm this sounds a bit like project 3…

When thinking about the different possibilities of a multigenre project, you must consider the rhetorical situation. For example, if the audience you are trying to reach is a bunch of politicians, it may not be the best idea to use a tumblr blog as a genre. The book says we should think of each genre as a chapter that contributes to a whole. If your genre seems a little random to your topic, it may not be the best for you. 

The steps to assembling a multigenre project should be:

1. Introduce your project and provide context (I think for our purposes, this will be the 1,000 word explanation of our project)

2. Sequence your genre pieces- i think this step will come in handy when making our presentation for the class, we will want to pick the order in a way that makes sense and builds to the general idea of our project.

3. Title your project- i think this is an important step a lot of people neglect

4. Create an Author’s or Artist’s Statement- explain why you made certain choices and why you conveyed your message in the way you did.

5. Package your project creatively- if you want people to care, you better make it interesting

I fee like the hardest part about this project was figuring out how to circulate these genres, but once that was figured out, it got much easier

Ch. 10 BBG Reflection

When I first skimmed through the chapter I was in complete shock to what I was to find…a short chapter in the dreaded Bedford Book of Genres. I could not believe my eyes and then I became overjoyed with happiness. Anyway, the chapter was about Multi genre Projects which is interesting because that happens to be exactly what Project 3 is. This chapter will be very helpful to me when I get stuck on my project 3, I can reflect back to this chapter to keep me going in the right direction and hopefully to an A+. The main focus of this chapter is on the 5 steps to assembling a multi genre project. These 5 steps are:

1) Introduce Your Project and Provide Context. This is an overview/summary of your project around two paragraphs long.

2) Sequence Your Genre Pieces. This means to put each genre in order so that it make the most sense.

3) Title Your Project. This makes sense and should not have to be explained.

4) Create an Author’s or Artist’s Statement. Explain your rhetorical choices and to evaluate the project.

5) Package Your Project Creatively. Make the way the reader see your genre very creative and out there. Don’t be boring!

The dreaded Bedford Book of Genres indeed. Chapter 10 will probably help on the road to an A+, but I am not sure it will get you there all by itself.  The five steps are really going to come in handy when we begin to struggle with our genres.

Chapter 10 Reflection

This chapter was talking about multigenres. I found the reading very helpful considering that the project we are doing involves various types of genres. Multigenres are not just easy things you can thing of off the top of your head, There are 5 steps on how to properly make a multigenre project. You have to: introduce your project and give context, Put your genre pieces is a logical order, title your project, provide an author’s statement and then put it all together in an appealing way. The point of a multigenre is to connect with your audience and capture the reader’s attention. Basically show your project, out the genres in an order that is easy to undertsnad, label your work, give a statement about how you feel and make the material presentable to the world. Multugenres are meant to be fun and a new way to look at the way you present information. The recent reading we have had have been very helpful for our project and I have been taking in the information. This chapter is making me reconsider some of the genres I want to do for my project but in good way. I have better ideas I want to do now.

Readings for 11/17

I probably reacted the same way the other students did, I was like “Ugh, I really have to read three articles?? Like that is going to be a lot.” But then as I started reading I quickly realized it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, the readings actually proved to be helpful. They turned out to be relevant and helpful for going into project three, the articles were about how to really design documents and the different medias, which that is all the project three really is, using media to target an audience. The articles really showed what needed to be done and what is important for creating our different medias. The par where it talks about breaking up the long paragraphs into something smaller with color and images to make it less boring and more interesting for the reader. I know personally for me I like looking at pictures instead of of long paragraphs of information that I think is pointless. Another point that I find really helpful from the reading was that you need reduce the clutter, you need to make sure the flow is simple and that anyone can understand it. This doesn’t mean you have to make it like a kindergartner project but you do not have to make some complicated project that only NASA scientists will understand.

Reflections for 11/17 Class

I found these readings to be helpful for project three, especially because one of my genres is a fact sheet. Yesterday when I was in Strozier, I spent so long trying to figure out what fonts to use, how to format my document, how big to make my boxes, etc… I thought the first reading helped me find the answers to all of these questions. All of the picture and diagram examples made me realize how important it is to actually put thought into the layout of your genre. 

For example, no one wants to read a document that is all words and no indents and a teeny tiny font. I learned the importance of indentations and spacing before reading this because I am a culprit of making my paragraphs really long. It can be intimidating looking at a documents that has no breaks… sometimes, us readers just need a break you know?

I liked reading the difference between the serif and the sans serif fonts. it definitely made me reconsider the fonts I am using for my genres.

Make sure to make everything pretty! I know this sounds cliche but the reading stresses the importance of making documents appealing to the eye. Everything is a competition my friends!

Just like SFH Images and Photos says, a picture is a thousand words. Photos can help us at just a glance know aspects of our subjects that would require a lot of explaining if words were used. Adobe Photoshop, iPhoto, and Picture Man can all be used for editing photos. Copyright also comes into play with editing images, it is important to ethically change a picture. Images should be no larger than it absolutely needs to be for the reader to read and understand it. We can crop images, place images to wrap texts, color images, and modify images all to fit the needs of our genre. The biggest thing I learned from this reading is to select a color scheme that will best fit your writing situation.

I must say, it was very difficult for me to read Analyzing Visual Rhetoric on my computer which is really ironic because all of the readings are about making things easy for the audience.. LOL

When you pick a genre, think about the intended audience, genre, mode, medium, and accesibility… if your reader can’t find it… whats the point! Make sure your piece is organized in a way that will be easy to follow. Always have organization so your reader will believe your ethos.

Reflection

Since part of project 3 is presenting your material to the world, I found these passages very helpful in that aspect. When laying out pages you have to choose a manageable size and orientation. Unfortunately a billboard would not be something you should consider due to the high price to put it up and limited time we have to complete the project. Then you have to break material into readable units, the text should be easy for all audiences. The information presented should be arranged according to relevance because if you start with the less important or less interesting stuff; then the reader might not care by the time they get to the important info. The material should be designed to direct the readers’ eyes down and across the page, which is how we naturally read so it is helpful to put up the material that way. Avoid clutter, too much info or improper organization if information can turn a reader of. After everything is posted you have to revise it, make sure to keep it concise but without losing the main message. When creating a page you have to make it appealing. Playing with different fonts, colors and graphs is a good way to capture a readers’ attention and keep it throughout the page. But also you have to consider the audience and what information you are talking about. You have to ask yourself and consider the basic audience, purpose, genre, etc. when it comes to your visual. Overall these articles were very beneficial to this project.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is all the buzz right now in the marketing world. Viral marketing is kind of a gamble in my opinion if a company is relying completely on viral marketing as their only form of advertisement. Basically viral marketing is depending on people to share whatever is being marketed with their friends. Viral videos/pictures/stories are very common and at some point or another everyone has been exposed to something that “went viral” because popular social networking, such as Facebook and Instagram, are flooded with viral videos. Viral marketing aims at taking advantage of the way social media works and how people share cool things to sell a product while attempting to avoid the traditional costs of advertising on TV networks or buying advertisement space in magazines or on websites. Viral marketing works by creating some cool or interesting video or picture that people share on their Facebook, Instagram, or twitter accounts. Recently I have seen an increase of advertisements that have their one hashtag after the video to give people a common way of sharing the video or their opinion. When people use this hashtag they are essentially providing free advertisement for this product because as the hashtag gets used more and more it will start to appear on the “trending hashtag” sections thus reaching even more people. In my experience, viral marketing works very well when the marketing people take advantage of holidays and appeal to popular opinions or emotions. For example, I saw a video today on my Facebook feed called “On Killing: Veterans” the marketers took advantage of Veterans day making the video seem relevant to society and appeals to people’s emotions as the video is kind of sad, but interesting.

Viral Marketing Reflection

What is viral marketing? Viral marketing as Wikipedia describes it are “marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networking services and other technologies to try to produce increases in brand awareness”. Or more simply it’s putting an advertisement out into the world and allowing people to promote it and share it with each other.

What does it do? Viral marketing makes spreading information easier. It decreases the work load of businesses and advertisers by allowing people to share information and market their projects for them. The term “virus” is used to describe the scenario because as the campaign increases with popularity among the masses, the information is shared like a virus.

How does it work? It works when people pick up on an idea and use the readily available tools to share it. Social media has greatly increased this trend for advertisers to utilize viral marketing strategies. One of the reads included the Old Spice commercial from a few years ago, which most of us all remember and maybe even quote still. Another one that recently came out it the gum wrapper commercial that follows the couple throughout their relationship. I first saw it shared on Facebook and Twitter before I saw it on TV. I bet that company has more sales now that it’s had in a long time because everyone has now seen that one ad.

When does it work? Viral marketing generally works if it identifies with its target audience or makes them feel some sort of emotion. Whether that emotion is happy and evokes a smile or is more somber and makes someone feel sentimental, the ad has to reach people on some level. Boring ads or poorly timed ones that don’t reach the audience in the right way will never be candidates for successful viral marketing.

I didn’t really think about the emotion aspect, but you’re right… It does work when the audience feels an emotion. We tend to pay way more attention to things that target our emotions, so that’s definitely a really important aspect of viral marketing!

Reflection

These articles were insightful and helpful on what techniques to use for project three. Viral marketing is a marketing technique that uses social networks and other technological devices to try to increase awareness in a brand or product. Viral marketing is basically using advertising to reach an audience to help promote a product. Viral marketing makes promoting products easier. It takes less time and work and still gets the job done quickly and efficiently. Sometimes it is referred to as virus because how much and how quickly information can spread to the people. Viral marketing works when people have an idea and use the tools available to share it with the world. Social media is the main factor that helps with viral marketing because it is something that billions of people use. Viral marketing works best when the person putting out the product knows who the audience is and does everything they can to get them to agree with whatever someone is selling. You have to make the audience excited, interested and grasp their attention so boring ads will not help the situation. I am going to use this information and apply it to my project. Gives me a new perspective on what I should do and how I should do it.

Writing Into The Day 11/10

Personally I love puppies. However, I have never actually owned a dog. I have played with a lot of dogs in my life time. Yet, I have been unable to own one due to family allergies. This has always bummed me out. I think puppies are great. Not only are they adorable but they improve mood as well. I know many people who say they would be having a bad day and it would be cured whenever they were playing with their dog. I wouldn’t know this first hand, but every time I’ve ever played with a dog I’ve felt a sense of carelessness. Interacting with a puppy is like interacting with a human child. The sheer amount of innocence in them is hilarious and fun. The only problem is I liked relaxed dogs. High strung hyper dogs can be a bit much to handle. Sometimes I just want to relax and sit down. If I had a dog that wanted to run around every time they saw me, I would probably get annoyed very fast. I have actually had experience with this situation. One time I was with a puppy and it wouldn’t stop jumping around and tearing at my shoe. I wasn’t annoyed by this but I would’ve much preferred it to just chill out. Another time I was with a puppy and like I said I was sitting down relaxing. All the puppy did was come over near me and lay down. This is the type of interaction that I enjoyed. I know this is unrealistic but as a non-dog owner I don’t get the appeal in hyper animals. I enjoy puppies just like everyone else but they also have their downsides. Puppies have to be taught everything and from what I’ve heard and witnessed they can be a little resistant to change. Some dog owners don’t even train their own dogs anymore. They send them away to training camps. I completely understand this. Training a dog in a dwelling that you don’t want messed up is somewhat of a paradox. The nature of an animal isn’t going to be that of a human. I’m not saying it wants to mess up a house but it will inevitably happen. Overall, I still think puppies are great and I wish I could have one. In fact I think puppies or any pet for that matter can be therapeutic for the owner. This information is all based off of my personal experience with puppies.

This is a narrative genre because the entry talks about the author’s experience with dogs and he could never have one due to allergies. The purpose of this document is to talk about how great dogs are and how the author does not have the luxury of being able to own one. He mentions how his allergies hold him back from owning a dog. There is a lot of pathos and this entry is very informal. The tone is very calm but joyful at the same time. The voice is of someone who appreciates dogs because he could not have one. The entry has easy vocabulary and it has simple concepts that everyone can understand. This piece was inspired by various personal experiences, not much research.

Snowey’s Journey Home

It was a sunny day wherever I was. I was put in this dark box again with these shinny bars in front of it, I hated this thing. My owner is talking to a woman in the car and we are going somewhere. Why am I in the evil box? I am never in here unless I did something bad. I ate all my food and did not pee in the house all week, unless I did something that I did not know about. My owner and the other person are leaving the car. Why am I being lifted? Where am I going? Why isn’t my owner coming with me? I am scared, I am barking but no one seems to care. Now the other person has me and put me on this moving walk way. I am in a dark room now, it is so loud. I hear other creatures that sound like me. I do not want to be here, I want to go home. What did I do to deserve to be in the evil box along with being in a dark room? I do not remember how long I was in that dark place for but it felt like forever. I am put on another moving walk way thing. I see a light! Maybe it is my owner and she has returned to pick me up and take me home! I do not see her, now I am mad. I am growling at everyone that is not my owner. My growling was more out of fear than anger. I see the other person from earlier, she has saved me! I am in another car, maybe I am going to see my owner again. This is not my house, this is not my bed and this is not my food. Where am I? I hate when I get the shakes but I have bad anxiety so I couldn’t help myself. There is another person entering the house, though she is smaller and younger. I do not like her. I wonder how these people know that my name is ‘Snowey.’ I do now know them ye they know me. Maybe if I go to sleep this nightmare will be over and I will be in my real home with my real family. I miss my mom and my brother, they were not taken way. Why was I the one that had to be removed from my loving family? Clearly I did something so terrible that I had to be removed. Oh gosh, here comes another person, though he is a man. He gave me a treat so I guess he is nice. They keep picking me up and kissing me. I would not mind it if they were my actual family. Do they not understand that I want to cry and sleep my sadness away? This person is trying to make me walk but I am too sad. I should be more grateful considering she saved me from the evil box. Looks like I will not be returning home anytime soon so might as well get used to these people.

Chapter #9 Reflection

Back to the tumblr posts. At least this chapter was not terribly long to read. This chapter discussed things we have been talking about all year. You write about your genre do self edit and have a peer do some editing on it as well. Then it discussed remixing genres, which this project is all about. By remixing genres you are able to present your position or material to the world in various ways. Which is what project 3 is all about so I found that section very helpful. If only we knew about it before having heart attacks over what we need to do for our last project. The examples they used in the chapter helped, but I think Ms. Bradley's prezi presentation on Al Gore and climate change did a better job clarifying on the different genres we can use. I like that in the section of revising the chapter reminds us that the first draft does not have to be perfect and over time with revising our material gets better. I'm exciting to finish this project because it is surprisingly fun and interesting. And reading the chapter gave me some confidence on it. We will see how the final product turns out.

Chapter 9 BBG Reflection

Yah, this is really early.

The entire beginning of this chapter was quite predictable. I mean, I think we all know how to revise our work at this point. I know for my Project one and two I revised almost too much; using my own observations, the advice of a peer reviewer, the reading and writing center (more than once for just one paper), and yet another peer reviewer.

Gwen Ganow’s example was a good one, but it did not take long for me to get the point. By the way, my drafts look quite similar to her chopped up piece so now I don’t feel as bad about my writing process.

I think the most important part of this chapter – the part of the chapter I’m sure Ms. Bradley wanted us to really pay attention to – was the section on remixing your work into different genres. Can anyone say “Project two”? The checklist at the end of the chapter was really helpful; it is similar to what Ms. Bradley told us in class. We have to consider our purpose, audience, rhetorical appeals, modes, media, style, design, and even sources when re-mediating our work (psst, the “sources” part is Short Assignment 2… don’t forget to do it!).

Yah, I know. I felt like her when I saw Short Assignment 2 was due Tuesday.

Chapter 9 BBG

Back on the Tumblr grind and we’re finally hopping back into the Bedford Book of Genres. Thank god for short chapters am I right? This chapter mainly focused on revising your projects. It suggests that the use of peer review is helpful if you can’t make any more changes yourself. I personally love peer review because I always like an outside sources opinion on how to change things and how to improve them. I know plenty of instances where the slightest change made all the difference and if it wasn’t for a peer review I would have never known to change it. This chapter has greatly helped me in coming up with ways that I can use my topic into different genres and different forms of media therefore doing better on project three. The chapter even explained word for word what our final project is and that is remixing our project into different genres. It provided plenty of examples as to how projects can be transformed into multiple genres. The best example being seeing the adaptations of comic books into movies in todays culture which is extremely popular. This chapter has shown that it is possible to change projects into different genres.

I agree peer reviewing is good to some extent, but the person editing may influence your writing style to match theirs. Overall good reflection.
