Waiters in Germany

There are a lot of things about Germany that I've come to like, but I've found the waiting services at restaurants to consistently suck. It's possible that my experiences are strange outliers, but I've consistently received poor service at German restaurants.

Restaurants in Germany include waiting services in the price of the food, and therefore a tip is not required. I typically tip anyway, but on several occasions the service was terrible, and I gave no tip.

I'll share one example:

A few days ago my family had a large dinner in a traditional Bavarian restaurant. We ordered drinks; our order consisted of a mix of Spezi (a popular German soda of cola + citrus soda), beer and juice Schorle (a mix of fruit juice and carbonated water). We then ordered our food. For the most part things went well. Then my brother asked to exchange dumplings for potato salad. The waiter didn't hold back on his opinion.

Waiter:'That doesn't go together.'

Guest: 'That's ok; I'd prefer potato salad.'

Waiter: 'That's disgusting! I'm not going to allow that.'

Guest: 'I'd like the potato salad.'

Waiter: 'Typical American.'

I was dumbfounded.

okay I keep seeing this and I felt the need to point out that humans are in fact any shade of brown/tan on the outside, if you mash them they are red, and if you skin them they are pink. no I will not be including photos.
