NOTE 2: while her ad infinitum verse is open to interaction, nothing written in it by anyone else than me or hime is considered to be canon unless one of us states otherwise. it is a very personal verse for both of us and while we are happy to share it with others, that comes with a lot of trust && it must be acknowledged that a lot of writing within it has been plotted for 5+ years and we are unlikely to significantly change plot points that we've established for a long time.

I wasn't around for Mother's Day in the UK but I just learned it's Mother's Day in other places today so !! In most verses, Yuko doesn't handle Mother's Day very well, though the severity of this does depend on which verse. What's consistent through all of them though is that she lost her mother, whether it be at a young age like in ad infinitum or still fairly recently like in Arknights. It was a defining moment in her life in every verse that drastically shifted the way her life would play out as she lost the person she was closest to in the world && generally ended up leaving the life she had before that behind completely afterwards. It's a very personal day for her && though she tries to push through the day with her usual smile, it's honestly very rough for her. The slightest amount of criticism or a comment that could be taken even a little unkindly can break her disposition with ease. She will still continue to push on, but the day serves as a reminder to a time that she very much wishes that she could forget.

Silence.

That was all that followed those words.  Words that tore through her heart as if it were nothing but a piece of paper.  

Nothing…  Was that all she was to him?  All she’d ever been?  All those hours spent together at the Clocktower, bittersweet memories that she’d cherished   —   that she’d cried over, desperate to return to purer times…  They meant nothing to him?

It was as though the rest of the world around the magus stopped completely, like time itself refused to move even a second further past that moment.  Any light at the end of the dark tunnel she’d been travelling down ever since That Day seemed to simply…  Fade away, much like that ever hopeful light in her eyes.

Of course.  Of course it couldn’t have been real.  It was all just a fairytale, a ficticious  ‘friendship’  she’d fabricated in her mind as a young girl longing for someone to care about her.

————    Why would anyone care about her anyway?

Dull violet hues stared at the projection in front of her, though she could hardly make out the now-blurred figure of the Crypter through the tears.  How long had passed since he’d said it?  One second?  Two?  Five?  Yuko had no idea, though it felt like an eternity.  Everything around her seemed like it was happening in slow motion, with the colours in the surroundings seeming to dull in an instant.

Eventually, the sadness gave way to a melancholic numbness, and an emptiness in her chest.  It was almost like part of her very being had been wrested from deep inside her, leaving the mage hollow and so, so…

Alone.

Opening it up, a photo of them would be held within. "Maybe this'll help us keep track... Happy birthday, My Love...Yuko~" unprompted | birthday asks !!

      Digits stroked over the ornate engravings, marveling at the minute details in the burnished metal. Over the almost countless years together they'd exchanged many gifts ( somehow each remaining different from the last ) and no matter how extravagant or modest the gift was, Yuko could always tell that they came from the heart. Each gift he'd presented to her was something that she treasured. They served as a reminder of the time they'd spent together ; the years of hard work they'd put in to building their life together && making each other smile.

      And what could symbolise all of that time better than this ??

      ❝ Oh, Otis ... ❞ As she opened it up to look at the picture within, her heart couldn't help but ache at the memory. Ignoring the sting of tears welling at the corners of her eyes, a warm, fond smile spread across her lips as the woman couldn't help herself but reminisce about the day the photo was taken. Her smile grew almost radiant && lit up the room as she stared up at him, hands clasping the gift close to her chest. There weren't enough words in the universe to describe how happy she felt.
