How to Finish
I drew this poster for Jon Acuff and his FINISH book tour. Big thanks to Jon for this collaboration, his book has some great ideas about how to complete creative and life goals.
Love this, but reblogging it specifically for âGet rid of secret rules.â Thatâs one of the most amazing illustrationsâand pointsâIâve ever seen.
so important especially for perfectionists who procrastinate and never finish, or even start because they set such high standards for themselves.
âKill untilâ and âget rid of secret rulesâ are, I have to say, what really did it for me.

JOURNAL 3 BLACKLIGHT EDITION REVEALED! (Part 1)
Todayâs a special day! Today is not only Fatherâs Day, but Alex and Ariel Hirschâs birthday! Letâs celebrate by cracking open your copy of Journal 3, prepping your blacklight and invisible ink pens, and jotting down everything here in the special edition so you can have a copy for yourself without resorting to eBay or shady second-hand Craigslist deals!
I was lucky number 02149 to get a copy of the special edition of Journal 3. Well, lucky as in âI could afford to buy it and pre-ordered it back in March the exact day I heard about it going on sale.â Still, I am PSYCHED to share this with everyone! Admittedly I didnât take photos of every single page â only the ones with black-light effects that were more than ink spatters. Some I had to take [kinda big] pictures of individually, to be able to read the text properly, and others were multi-page spreads that I couldnât resist capturing in their beautiful glowy glory.
Of course Iâll be captioning them all for you, in case you canât download/read them. Also, thereâs a few secret codes in here! But did you really expect anything less? Also also, this is a 9 page word document (not counting pics), so Iâm splitting it up into 3 parts. Especially considering the size of these pictures.Â

So I saw this video on tiktok and since Kiddo and I are both super bad at remembering to do things and to do lists just donât seem to work I thought this was worth a try
So the key fobs came today and I filled them out.
As you can maybe see some are specific to me and some are more specific to kiddo but most are just general chores
The bracelet things should arrive Monday and then we can give it a go during this lockdown and I can report back how well it works!
ADHD reward system? Please tell me your secret!
My therapist has been helping me find a reward system that works for me, and as it turns out, gold star stickers are really helpful for making me feel like a tangible goal was met, and helps give me that sweet, sweet dopamine release that comes with completing a task, something which us ADHDâers really struggle to achieve and are already coming at from a disadvantage with our brains regularly not producing enough âhappyâ hormones as it is.
It was supposed to be âa sticker for every time you finish a chapterâ, but after some revision, my therapist said that was too tall of a goal, and that I should pick something smaller. So instead I now get a star every time I finish a 500-word milestone, placing the sticker in my writing calendar/journal thing that I use to keep track of my writing, and ironically, I have started to produce more work than when I was stiving for one chapter a day.
To give you an idea of how staggeringly effective this has been for me, Iâve written over 30k of original fiction in the last week. (75k total if you include my social media and blog stuff, which I currently do not but likely should.)
So this is what it looked like when I was attempting to do a chapter of edits and revisions a day during the month of December 2019 (note: I was supposed to start this in Nov, so you can see how well that worked out for me lol):
ID: A calendar showing days of the month with a shiny star sticker showing a completed task.
And this is what my writing journal looks like now that Iâm doing a star for every 500 words:
ID: an image of a handwritten journal with the dates mapped out, followed by a shiny star sticker for every completed 500-word milestone. There are 65 stars in total for the month of January 2020. Itâs also tinged by a green light cause Iâm doing a chronic pain experiment, so far with positive results!
So as of today, January 8th, with ever star = 500 words, then 65*500 = 32500 words totalled in 7 days. This does not include, like I said, my social media output where I am far more productive, this is just my fiction and some editing work for friends.
(Which side note: this is not to flex, or to say that others should be able to achieve this level of output. I am a professional writer, this is my main job and only source of income. And also, I was forged in the fires of understaffed editing hell where we would be expected to churn out 100k+ a week in edits and revisions to keep on track. I have the time and a learned skillset I have spent years amassing to be able to do this and am working towards a rigid deadline. I simply have not been healthy enough in a long time to manage it, and am finally working my way back up to speed after years of illness. Donât look at this and think, âIâm not achieving enoughâ, every victory no matter how small is worth celebrating. And I say that with the utmost sincerity, as someone who spent most of the last 2-3 years unable to get out of bed.)
Iâve also started using it to help keep track of bills and chores around the home. So every time something gets done/done on time, whoever completed the task gets a star on the calendar. This includes Oppy the Not-A-Roomba, who does a very good job of taking care of the house on a daily basis:
ID: an image of a chore calendar denoting various tasks that have been marked off with a holographic silver star sticker, including our robot vacuum who does an excellent job and deserves all the stars. (Our names got blurred out cause ETD doesnât want his real name out there in the world, so thatâs what is blurry.)
This system is useful for several reasons, the primary one being a sense of achievement and continued motivation, and the second, to allow you to review each month to see where you are doing well, and where you might otherwise be struggling.
For example, if I have a bad day for writing or decide to take a day off, I write that down in the calendar rather than leaving it blank, so that I have a record of what went wrong (or right, if I am electing to self care that day and take a day off) and how my overall progress is doing.
In terms of house stuff, this has been especially useful for ETD and myself, as it shows us where we are managing to do a good job with the house, and where our executive dysnfunction issues really trip us up and where we need to make improvements. And I donât just mean in an âI should try harder wayâ, I mean you have to actively sit down and be like âhey! What is preventing me from completing this thingâ and trying to figure out effective ways to either get around it or resolve a larger issue at hand.
So for us, the biggest thing we tend to miss is doing dishes after dinner, meaning we get left with a pile-up of dishes to deal with first thing in the morning, and my ADHD canât handle that. It wonât let me eat until Iâve cleared all the mess, but I usually donât have the energy to clean up if I havenât eaten, so itâs this awful cycle of ineptitude. Weâre doing better with the star reward system, cause itâs showing us our progress loud and clear on the fridge door, but we are both usually so fatigued and exhausted by the end of dinner that doing dishes is just one thing too many for our mutual disorders. So, the solution for this would, of course, be a dishwasher, cause if we had one of those, we could load stuff in, turn it on, and let those dishes get done while we go to bed then put them away in the morning. We canât afford to do that right now, and we have other appliances we need to buy/replace before we can do that (still donât have a tumble dryer, or a washer I can access, rip) but it does give us a tangible goal to work toward, and also, the motivation to keep on top of things because it goes from âan endless task with no end in sightâ to âthereâs a solution for this, we can manage a while longer.â
Now you could be saying, but Joy, Iâm an adult! Surely I shouldnât expect rewards for completing every day tasks that I should be able to do?!
To which I say, neurotypical people get rewards all the time and get an unconscious dose of dopamine/serotonin from their brains every time they complete a task. Theyâre playing the game of life on easy mode, the gold star is your achievement for completing it daily on Nintendo 99 hard mode. IF THE STICKER WORKS, TAKE THE STICKER
YOUâVE EARNED IT.
Because I get asked this frequently: no, you do not need to be diagnosed with ADHD to use ADHD hacks. Whether you have depression, some form of executive dysfunction or are just going through a hard time right now and need a little extra boost, and you think something might make your life easier/more motivating, then please, utilize it.
In doing so you are helping to normalize the kind of tricks and tools those of us who are neurodivergent need, but are often criticized and looked down on for using. But also, and most importantly, you are helping yourself! And that is a wonderful, good thing. You donât need to suffer more to make your life better.
hey by any chancz do you happen to have any ace attorney fic rec?
I sure do!
(Also, if you want to just run through my bookmarks list on AO3, I would recommend anything on it, though mind your filters - Iâm an adult, and some of the stuff I read is aimed at the 18+ crowd, so please use discretion!)
The Invisible Lawyer, by happy_mystic
Leans beautifully into the magical-realism aspect of the Ace Attorney universe, and features some high-quality Pheenie-era content! A longer one-shot, this is a great choice for some lunch break reading or a nice slice of AA content right before bed!
.
Kristoph Gavin: Bastard Attorney, by Ravenoftheskyes
If youâve seen a thread with a title like this floating around sometime over the past half a year and gone, âGee, I wish someone would write a fic for thisâ... then youâre in luck, because Ravenoftheskyes did! A crack!fic in the grand old tradition of the genre, itâs five chapters and about 7k words of Kristoph Gavin and Dahlia Hawthorne being salty, terrible bros facing off against Manfred von Karma in court. A fun ride if youâre looking for some of that good AA-style dark humour!
.
Texts & Turnabouts, by Yanagikana
Multiple text conversations between the various AA characters, and actually done with a text-message creation program, so donât let itâs word count of zero fool you! It features a lot of the goofy fun youâd expect with text fics, but also goes unexpectedly serious at times in a really good way - this fic actually has my favorite Phoenix-Klavier post-AA:AJ interaction Iâve seen to date! Itâs on-going, but doesnât have any incomplete arcs as of the moment, so feel free to hop in and have a good giggle!
.
Turnabout Sole, by Collaberal Damage
Narumitsu post-Dual Destinies body-swap fic, do I really need to tell you more than that? ten chapters, about 17k words, and complete, itâs the sort of fic you read over a nice lazy breakfast or for an extended mid-afternoon break, drink it on down like some drink you like to drink, I was going to use a specific drink but âdeliciousâ is a highly subjective concept that I decided not to get into.
.
Fate, Choice, and Everything in Between, by The_Eccelctic_Bookworm
Narumitsu soulmates fic, and an interesting take on the soulmates premise in general. Uses the âwords on skinâ approach, but - and this is the neat bit - the words appear only after your soulmate has said them, they have personal significance to you, and they can fade if the relationship/feelings fade. Basically itâs the coolest thing Iâve ever seen done with soulmate marks, a bit more than 4k, and complete, so you should probably read it. Also, why arenât there more soulmate AUs in this fandom, I thought it would be lined with them when I first got here and itâs not????
.
Fifty Flights of Stairs (Plus One), by theacegrace
Okay, time for a genfic! And hey, look, Raymond Shields! Takes place during AAI2, when Miles and Ray have to climb a lot of stairs to get to Kay. Itâs a great slice of interaction between these characters, and covers some stuff that it would have been nice to see in the game. A bit under 4K words and complete, one to read with a plushie or friend on-hand, in case of feels-induced hug cravings.
.
Miles Edgeworth and the No Good, Very Bad, Week of Cases from Absolute Hell, by mullhund
The events of Ace Attorney Investigations 1, as transcribed through the text conversations Edgeworth has with Phoenix during them. If you need a good laugh, give this one a read, I howled the first time I read it, and still giggle with every reread! Featuring perfect levels of snark and sass from our favorite legal duo, and a bit over 3k words, this features the parts of these two that make them a fun couple!
.
Everything that I, Green Trickster/tiedyedtrickster, have written!
Because of course Iâm going to recommend my own stuff! Besides Saturation, Iâve also got Teenage Rebellion (a cute one-shot involving Pearl), my Flock Together series (a small set of one-shot wing!fics set in the same universe), Fae Taken (my on-going fantasy/folklore involving Miles getting stolen by the faeries as a child and Phoenix going on a quest to get him back)! Those are all the things Iâve written in formal fic-format - I also have a bunch of stuff that are collected posts for various AUs Iâve done a lot of world-building for here on tumblr and wanted to organize better. These are easy to spot, they always have âAUâ in the title! ...except for The Ace Benders, because itâs sneaky like that.
Hopefully somewhere in all that youâll find something to your taste! ^U^
Thanks for the ask!
today i offer you some of my designs for the dsmp characters that iâm happy with, tomorrow? who knows.
(basically i like to change my character designs depending on where the story is and incorporating my headcanons too so this is pretty much a reference line up that helps me remember all that)
While cleaning out my room I found a paper that my therapist gave me some time ago to deal with obsessive and intrusive thoughts. Sorry the paper is a little crinkled and stained, but I figured Iâd post it in hopes that it will help someone like it helped me.
Here it is again with text for anyone who canât see the picture
That thought isnât helpful right now.
Now is not the time to think about it. I can think about it later.
This is irrational. Iâm going to let it go.
I wonât argue with an irrational thought.
This is not an emergency. I can slow down and think clearly about what I need.
This feels threatening and urgent, but it really isnât.
I donât have to be perfect to be OK.
I donât have to figure out this question. The best thing to do is just drop it.
Itâs OK to make mistakes.
I already know from my past experiences that these fears are irrational.
I have to take risks in order to be free. Iâm willing to take this risk.
Itâs OK that I just had that thought/image, and it doesnât mean anything. I donât have to pay attention to it.
Iâm ready to move on now.
I can handle being wrong.
I donât have to suffer like this. I deserve to feel comfortable.
Thatâs not my responsibility.
Thatâs not my problem.
Iâve done the best I can.
Itâs good practice to let go of this worry. I want to practice.
This was very helpful. I especially like the âI have to take risks in order to be free.â OCD can be scary sometimes (all the time)

any tips for if someone was gonna start making animatics? i love yours sm
Ohhh thank you so much, Iâm planning on making some sort of process video, but I can at least share some things I think about when making things
Storyboard!
I usually drop projects if I donât have a plan. The Simon video? I finished that suuuper quick because I sorta knew what I was doing.. even though I didnât board like half of it. I get bored of ideas real easy so if the video takes too long to finish im outta therrre.
Pick colours and textures ahead of time
I find that picking only a handful of colours and textures to use, itâll tie the video together, and also makes the process faster for me
Some colours I keep to colouring only the lines, but I think it couldâve still looked nice with out doing that lol
Background??????
I think they make things look more... finished, but Iâm lazzzy, so instead of hand drawing it myself, I grab an existing photo, cut it up and mash it to suit what I need it for.
I also try and match the style, textures, and colours Iâm using to how Iâm editing the photo, or else itâll be too distracting from your drawings!
Programs!
I use Paintool Sai and SonyVegas to do everything, but really all you need is a drawing application and a video editor. [Although I REALLLY wanna use after effects cause you can do more interesting edits!!!]Â
Took me a while to figure out that organizing my time line will make my life easier eeeeee
Audio
I try to make sure the pictures match to the dialogue beats [same with songs of course!]. You know you did it right when the video is still interesting to watch, but the drawings are scribbles. If you wanna see what the simon video in its sketch form check it out here. I feel like this is the most important partÂ
Iâll probably think about a lot more things, but heres a list of things for now!!
put together some sketchbook pages from practice stuff made over last couple of weeks.
Again this is my personal take on color! It really depends on the situation and what you personally value, and in the end practice is your best friend.

I thought he had one on John Wick too but I canât find it. If you like saturated colors though, check that movie out!!
those are only a couple of exterior references, thereâs lots out there!! so good luck & I hope this helped!!
Every Single Name in The Magnus Archives: Season 1
I just finished listening to season 1 of The Magnus Archives. As someone who is both terrible with names and also (probably) has some auditory issues, I decided to take note of every single name I heard from each episode.
