Summary: You open up a bit to Oliver and you start your job at the club.
Part seven of For the Kids
You chewed on your lip as you waited for Oliver to reply. You already felt your statement was correct with his lack of yes or no. Sighing, you wondered if he regretted helping you now.
That’s not something you should be worrying about . He replied.
Not worried. Curious.
Tell me more why you’d think it was me tonight at work.
You paused. You'll be at the club?
I tend to stop in yes. He told you, and you felt even more nervous.
You groaned, feeling you had to try harder for some reason now. And look even better. You had a feeling he hired the prettiest women he could...then there was you. Pushed into hiring you because you were Tommy’s friend. “Shit.” You sighed.
Unless you don’t want me to? He sent after a while.
I can’t exactly tell my boss not to show up, right?
If it makes you uncomfortable. He replied, surprising you.
Sighing, you leaned your head back against the wall you were sitting against. I’m just nervous, that’s all. First job in years and all that fun stuff. You told him. Don’t wanna screw up in front of my new boss.
I’m not that scary! He told you. I promise.
And I’m not like what I imagine your other waitresses look like.
His name lit up the screen as an incoming call. Your cheeks heated up, scared you’d upset him somehow. “H-hello, Oliver.”
“Hey. What’s this about other waitresses?” He asked. When you were silent for a moment, he sighed softly. “I hire based on ability.” He stated. “That’s it.”
“So, if I walk in, and those waitresses aren’t an 8...I’ll know why.” Not that you truly believed that. Hotter waitresses meant more money.
He sighed. “Okay. Bit offended you think I hire like that but…”
You hung your head. "I'm sorry. I'm getting caught up in my own head, and I can't get Mark's voice out of my head. And the way he acted like the world's best father today. Ugh."
He stayed quiet for a moment. “Hey, it’s okay.” He assured. “I’m sorry you had to see him today.” He really was. “Talk to me about it?” He offered.
“Tommy was there, so there’s not too much to talk about. He helped Maggie get some more of their toys.” You shrugged, playing with a piece of fuzz near your leg. “Mark told Maggie he loves me.”
“Do you feel like that’s true?” He asked gently.
“No.” You said easily. “That was gone a long time ago.”
“Poor Maggie then that he fed her that. He’s probably just being manipulative.” He said. “Just my opinion.” He added quickly. “I wasn’t there.”
“He accused me of sleeping with someone else. So I asked how Claire was.” You blushed, not wanting to voice that it was him that Mark asked about. “He called me jealous, and asked me what I expected.”
“The nerve.” He mumbled. “I’m sorry he was an asshole.” He shook his head, clenching his jaw. “At least you’re out of that house.”
“Yeah, now I just have to make it.” You said sadly. “I’ll let you go. Thanks for listening.”
“Anytime.” He promised. “See you later.”
After the two of you hung up, he was torn about what he was thinking. He really felt he was attracted to you at first sight. But he felt bad for even thinking that. Especially with what you were going through with Mark. He truly hated the man but knew if he did anything else as Arrow, you’d catch on. More than you already had. Which was slightly impressive.
He also didn’t mean to make you nervous for work and wondered if he should show. But, he also wanted to make sure the other workers were being respectful. He felt you were very attractive no matter how you thought of yourself and knew guys would be looking. Sighing, he decided he’d go, and try to keep out of your sight.
He felt himself dressing up just slightly and before he knew it, he was standing on one of the stairs, eyeing the empty club right before opening. He heard Tommy showing you around and stayed in the shadows. He listened to you ask questions, clearly wanting to make sure you got things right. He had a feeling you’d be a good worker. Most just did it for the money or the name. He leaned against the railing and watched you, smiling softly as you laughed.
When Laurel arrived at 7, the kids had already eaten dinner, and cleaned up. She smiled as Maggie had set up all of her toys and few polishes. “Party time?” Laurel chuckled. Maggie eagerly nodded, making Laurel smile. “First I’m gonna help your mom get ready for work, okay?”
“Okay! I wait.” She kicked happily. She played with some toys while Laurel went to your room with you.
“I brought a few things so that you can mix and match for the next couple weeks until you can get some stuff you’d like.” She smiled.
You widened your eyes as she took the stuff out. “I’m glad I managed to shave.” You mumbled. “Are you sure that will even fit me?” You asked, blushing. She was still fit, as you were sure she went to the gym. You had that mom body.
“I’m sure. I also brought shape wear just in case you wanted that. But I think you’ll look amazing.” She smiled. “I love shapewear.” She shrugged. “Hey, you stress eat an entire pizza before a party and not need it.” She teased when you looked at her in disbelief.
You smiled slightly at that. “True, I guess.” You went to get dressed. A little while later, you came out of the bathroom. “I don’t think I’ve even tried to wear something like this since before Clay.” You blushed brightly.
She beamed. “You look fantastic. Expect huge tips.” She winked, making your face heat up more. “Want me to do your makeup?” She offered.
“Oh, it’s already done.” You bit your lip, shaking your head. “But, yeah, you can fix it.”
She gave you a shy smile. “Sorry.” She went to look at your makeup and nodded. “I can work with this.” She assured you.
“Okay.” You sat patiently.
You were nervous as all hell when you pulled up to the club that night at 8. Your heels felt as if they were too loud as you stepped onto the sidewalk. Chewing on your lip, you blushed as Tommy came out, whistling at you. “Shut it.” You chuckled.
“If I wasn’t a happily taken man I’d get some thoughts.” He teased. “You look great.” He hugged you.
You playfully smacked his arm before hugging him back. “Yeah, yeah.” You chuckled. “Alright. Show me around, boss.” You teased.
He winked and led you in, getting into the basics. “You get two breaks, and a lunch.” He explained. “There’s usually food in the back, but if you want something ordered, that’s fine. Going out to grab something usually doesn’t work.”
You nodded. “Takes too long, got it.” You let out a breath. “Will you be around during the night? Oliver said he comes sometimes, too.”
“Sometimes.” Tommy nodded. “We both like to check on things. But he just likes to socialize.” He chuckled. “You’ll barely notice he’s here.”
You took a deep breath and nodded. “Okay.” You licked your lips. “I’m guessing now that the tour is over I need to fill out papers or something?” It’d been too long since you had a job.
“You’re ahead of the game.” He chuckled, leading you towards the back office. "So, how are the kids dealing with you being gone tonight? Getting home so late."
“I think Clay is happy.” You chuckled. “Maggie might cling to Laurel and never let you have her back.” You told him. "I left them playing princess spa."
He laughed. “I’m sure she doesn’t mind that.”
Oliver had watched the pair of you head into the office and smiled to himself. He knew you’d fit right in and he couldn’t wait to talk to you again. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he made his way to another part of the building. He looked forward to seeing you work. He was curious to see what you were wearing, as he'd only caught a glimpse.
He eyed the floor as people began to file in and Tommy showed you how to take a few orders. He then introduced you to the other girls. He smiled to himself as he saw your outfit, knowing it was Laurels. In his opinion it looked better on you.
It was an hour into your shift, and your nerves will still insane. You hadn’t been in a crowd this big in ages, and you weren’t sure where to focus. The music made it a million times harder for people to get your attention, which didn't help. When your break came, you rushed out to get a breath of air in one of the halls. Leaning your head back, you closed your eyes and focused.
Oliver came down the hall and wondered if to approach you. Would he make things worse? He cleared his throat. “I can pretend I didn’t see you and go to the office?” He asked.
You jumped slightly and looked over at him. “Are you a ninja?” You asked.
He smiled. “Possibly.” He nodded. “You look nice.” He complimented. “You seem to be learning fast, as well.”
You blushed brightly. “Thank you.” You said softly. “How long have you been here?” You were curious.
“Couple hours.” He shrugged. “Just wanted to make sure you were okay.”
You sighed. “Overwhelmed, honestly.” You pushed off the wall that you were against. “It’s loud, crowded, and very attractive.” You chuckled.
He smirked slightly. “That’s a really good explanation.” He nodded. “I’m sure you’ll get used to it. I mean, you wrangle the kids all the time, right?” He joked.
You nodded. “Yeah, but I can lift one of them up to carry her to another room…” You smiled.
“Yeah, can’t say that works here.” He chuckled. “I mean, you could try, but I don’t think that would go over very well, honestly.”
You giggled. “No.” You agreed. “I better get back.” You motioned to the door you had come through.
He nodded. “Thanks for chatting with me.” He opened the door for you. “And have a good rest of the night.”
You eyed him shyly. “Thank you, Oliver.” You stepped in, taking a deep breath.
It was nearly three by the time that you got home. Your heels had been taken off as soon as you got into the car. You yawned as you walked into your apartment, groaning softly. You were thankful that you only did this two nights a week, but Maggie would be up in about 4 hours. Up and very energetic. You would need a lot of coffee.
You went to get Laurel and smiled as you saw she had fallen asleep with Maggie. "Laurel." You patted her leg, whispering.
She hummed as she began shifting and blinked awake. “Oh, hey.” She yawned, getting up to stretch. "What time is is?"
“Just about three.” You winced as you stretched as well. "Thought you'd wanna get home."
She nodded and hugged you. “Tell me all about it tomorrow, okay?” She grabbed her shoes from Maggie's floor.
You nodded. “Deal. I haven’t stayed up this late since teething season.” You chuckled. "See you tonight, technically."
She smiled and waved once she got everything going. You followed her out to make sure she got to her car. Waving as she pulled out, you felt you'd be okay. You gave one last yawn before rushing to change into pjs. Morning would come far too soon.
Maggie let you sleep a tiny bit later than you figured but she was soon poking you. "Mommyyyyy." She sang.
“No, Mags.” You whined. "Nap with me?"
“I just woke up mommy.” She cuddled to your side. "I'm hungry."
You sighed and rubbed your eyes. “Okay. Give me a sec.” You shifted to sit up.
She smiled and hugged a pillow as she looked up at you. "Laurel is fun!" She said finally.
“Is she?” You smiled. “Sounds like she had a blast.” You pulled her into your lap. "She'll be here again today."
She hugged you. “Yay!” She said excitedly. "We played princess, and she made us snacks."
“Yummy snacks?” You gently tamed her hair with your fingers. "She looked comfy lying with you last night."
She nodded quickly. “Yummy snacks. And she watched shows with me before bed!” She told you, excitedly.
“Well she sounds like an amazing babysitter.” You carried her as you stood. "But I'll be only two nights a week."
She pouted. “Okay. Will Tommy come?” She asked, hopeful. "Or Oliver?!" She gasped.
You fought a wince. “You like Oliver?” You smiled instead.
"A lot!" She nodded as you set her on the counter.
“I’m sure he’d be happy to hear that.” You chuckled. "He likes you guys, too."
“Me more?” She grinned. "I'm cute!"
You laughed. “You sure are.” You began making them breakfast. Clay would probably wake up midmorning. It was fine with you for that particular day. Weekends were his days to sleep in.
Maggie swung her legs. “Work was fun?” She asked.
"It was." You nodded. "And loud."
She gasped. “Like a party?” She asked, in awe. "Fun!!"
You chuckled. “I had to bring orders of drinks to people.” You explained. “It was very crowded. You know how Disney looks on tv?” She nodded. “Like that, but no kids, and it’s darker.”
She scrunched her nose. “Sounds scary.” She muttered, no longer interested in it. “Can I play until it’s time to eat?” She asked.
Dean knocked on her door five hours later. He had no idea what to expect when she opened the door. When she finally answered it was clear how upset she was. “Thanks for coming.” She stepped aside to let them both in. “How much did Bobby tell you?”
He sighed. “Just that your daughter is missing. She’s 15, and you don’t know if she ran away, if it’s demons, or if she was kidnapped.”
Sam quickly started setting up his laptop at the little table in her room. “Do you have a picture of her?” He glanced at her with a sympathetic look on his face.
Nodding, she licked a tear from her lip and went to get it. “It’s the most recent. Her and her best friend at homecoming just last month.” She pulled out the picture of them. You were holding up the camera while the two of you smiled up at it. There was a light in your green eyes that she wished could have stayed there forever. “She’s the one with purple hair, but it’s pink now.” She explained as she handed it over.
As he looked at it, his eyes darted to her for a moment. “What’s her name?” He asked softly as he handed the picture to Dean. He saw it, she could tell.
“Y/N Y/L/N.” Her eyes watched as Dean stared at the picture. She could tell he was taking it in. The teenage girl with his eyes.
His gaze slowly moved to her. “She’s mine.” It wasn’t a question. It was a very loaded statement.
I wish I could make the duration less than a day but nooooo it's lame lol. I want to get it started tonight so I might just take the winning vote in a couple hours.
[looking at people younger than me] you have your whole life ahead of you [looking at people older than me] you have your whole life ahead of you [looking at myself] its over
i think a huge part of the issue is the gap between who i am in my head and who i am in the physical world and i know everyone contains multitudes and that’s normal but the dissonance is just too strong and no matter how hard i try i can not bridge it

Part 9 of Welcome to Hawkins

The turnout for Eddie’s funeral was moving. The Wheelers, the Byers, Jim and El, Max, Steve, Dustin and his mom, the Sinclairs, your parents, his uncle, and some of his old D&D group. Holding Willow close, you kissed her cheek. She would only know her father through stories, pictures, and home movies. Having her look so much like him would be both a blessing and a curse. Her tiny hand patted your cheek, coming away wet, making her look at it.
You stood there long after he was lowered into the ground. “Come on, sweetie.” Your mother said gently, hand on your lower back. “Let’s get you home.”
Nodding, you sniffed and followed her towards the parking lot. They had cancelled their vacation when you called them sobbing that Eddie was dead. Your mother had rushed over, leaving your father to watch Willow. She’d held you, her heart breaking, as you were inconsolable. There was nothing that she could do for you. You lost the man you loved, the father of your child. Nothing could make that better.
Sitting in your apartment that night after you got Willow to bed felt wrong. It didn’t feel like a home anymore. The love and life that had made it a home was dimmed. While, yes, you had your daughter, Eddie had brought so much light to it. Could you stay there? Glancing at the clock, you felt it was too early to go to bed. It was only 8.
Hearing a knock at the door, you furrowed your brows and went to answer the door. There stood a sad looking Steve, Dustin, Lucas, Max, El, Mike, and Will. “We didn’t want you to be alone tonight.” Dustin told you and that was when you noticed it. Each of them had a sleeping bag and backpack.
“Thank you.” You breathed, stepping aside to let them in. Once again you were brought to tears.
“I brought over some brownies. My mom made them when she found out I was coming over.” Max told you. While you had only met her mother once, she had still been thoughtful enough to make brownies.
Will held up a ziplock baggie. “I made my trail mix.” He gave you a sad smile.
“I brought Eggos.” El had three boxes in a grocery bag.
“I brought beer. For us. Not them.” Steve shrugged.
Knowing that you weren’t being left alone with your grief was a relief. “You guys didn’t have to, but I’m glad you did. Why don’t you guys put your stuff over there and we can find a movie to watch?” As they went to do that it hit you that you’d likely never play D&D again. It didn’t seem possible to play the game that had led you to who you saw as the love of your life. He was gone, and with it your desire to play.
Waking up the next morning, you shuffled out to the kitchen with Willow on your hip. You were surprised to see Steve at your stove. “You’re up early.” You yawned, making him glance at you.
“I thought I’d make everyone crepes.” He shrugged like it was nothing. “Willow’s are in the fridge. I wanted to make sure they were cool enough whenever she got up.”
“That was sweet, thank you.” You went to put her in her high chair before getting her a small sippy of milk and the plate Steve had made her. “Eat up.” You kissed the top of her head. “Grandma is coming to watch you today, mommy has to work.”
“The day after the funeral?” Steve asked, appalled they didn’t give you more time off.
You nodded with a sigh. “I’m the only one paying bills now. I might move, though.” You explained. “It’s not the same here without him, but at the same time this was where we brought home Willow and raised her so it would feel wrong to move. It’s confusing.” How the hell did you work through that? Hearing movement, you looked over to see El and Max coming in. “Morning. Steve’s making breakfast.
Max blinked the sleep from her eyes. “Steve can cook?” She asked, a confused look on her face.
“Yes, I can cook.” He raised an eyebrow at her. “There’s some on that plate there.” He motioned to the counter with a spatula.
You smiled softly as Willow happily ate her breakfast, completely unaware of the sadness that permeated the apartment. “I think someone will want seconds.” You told Steve. “She can have mine, I’m not hungry.” Even the day before you’d run on coffee, half a sandwich, and one of Max’s brownies. You had no appetite whatsoever.
After Steve put a couple more crepes on a plate in the fridge for Willow, he put two on a plate in front of you. With a pointed look, he went back to cooking. That look said what his mouth didn’t- you needed to eat. “What time do you work today?” He asked you.
“Noon. I work until 6 today.” You’d be talking to your mom about possibly watching Willow more so you could up your hours. When Eddie had been covering half the bills part time was perfect. Now you needed to try to get full time.
El and Max sat at the table with you with their plates. “Do you need any help before work?” El asked before making a face at Willow who was staring at her. “Hi!” She waved.
Willow giggled at that. “Hi!” She waved back.
Your fork had been halfway to your mouth when she blurted that out. “Oh my God! Her first word.” Eddie had missed out by days. Had she said that less than a week ago? He would have heard his baby girl talk. It was the first of many things that he would miss, hitting you all over again that he was gone. Swallowing, you set your fork down and let out a breath.
“Hey, it’ll be okay. I can’t imagine what you’re going through, but we’re all here.” Steve promised. “She’s got all of us.”
“Even when we’re off at college.” Max nodded before taking a bite of her crepe. “Oh, maybe we can try to take turns calling every week to read to her before bed.”
“You’ll all be busy with classes. Just promise to visit when you’re in town for breaks? If even for lunch?” It would give you something to look forward to.
El held up her pinky for you. “Promise.”
With a tearful smile, you looped your pinky with hers. Max did her best to add hers in, making you chuckle lightly. “I’d join in, but I’m over here playing chef.” Steve joked. “I’m mentally pinky promising.”
Dustin yawned as he came in. “I smell something good.” He blinked the sleep from his eyes. “Sweet, crepes.” He grinned as Lucas, Will, and Mike started making their way into the kitchen, as well. Having a full kitchen was a bandaid on your heart.

Summary: You and Dean meet by accident and he decides he has to get to know you.
Part one of Opposites
Sitting at your desk, your eyes were locked on the screen in front of you. You were working on your guilty pleasure- fanfiction. Fanfiction was a way for you to step out of your own little world and into something bigger, better, and more accepting. In real life you were shy, unsure of yourself, a wallflower, and someone who had never fit in (you’d tried in middle school and it was awful). In your stories you could be anyone, go anywhere, be friends with anyone, and do anything.
At that moment, you were writing one where your favorite character in your favorite show was declaring his love for the reader. He was telling her how he didn’t know something was missing in his life until she smiled at him, and that his life would be lacking if her smile was taken from him. Your heart was swooning, knowing you’d never have that romance in your life.
You paused and sipped your coffee. It was nearly gone which meant so was this writing session. A cup of coffee was how much writing you did every afternoon. It was your time to decompress after work and before you needed to make dinner and do housework.
Once you had finished up the paragraph you made your way to your kitchen to make dinner. Tonight you opted for a breaded and baked chicken breast on top of a salad. Simple. Easy. Just as you pulled out your chicken, you paused. You could hear scratching at your apartment door, you furrowed your brows. “What the heck?” You muttered as you set the pan on your stove. You made your way to your door, wondering if maybe a racoon got in the building or something. Opening it you were greeted with a very handsome man and a dog you knew from around the building.. “Can I…help you? Why do you have Marshall?” You asked, confused.
“Sorry, sweetheart. I’m watching my brother’s dog for the weekend and he slipped out.” He gave you an apologetic smile. “Probably came to your door because something smells amazing.”
“It’s okay. I was just confused as to why there was scratching at my door. Now I know.” Which would be anyone’s natural reaction. “Hey, Marshall.” Reaching down, you gave the happy dog a quick scratch. You knew his owner from passing each other in the lobby for the past couple years. From what you knew he was young, lived with his girlfriend, and was in school.
“I’m Dean, by the way. Just moved in down the hall.” Holding the dog’s collar with one hand, he held out the other for you to shake.
You glanced at his hand a moment before giving it a quick shake. “I’m Y/N. Welcome to the building.” Taking a step back, you hoped that it was obvious you wanted to get back to dinner.
“If you’re free tomorrow, could I take you out to dinner? You can tell me about the area a bit, the best places to go for a good time.” Was he flirting with you? Men, especially younger attractive ones, didn’t flirt with you
How did you turn him down gently? You had no experience in this area. Even when you were younger you kept to yourself. “I’m sorry, no.” Straight to the point. Wasn’t that best?
Dean’s smile faltered ever so slightly, but he didn’t get huffy or annoyed. Which led you to believe he was simply trying to be nice by asking you to dinner. “No problem. I’ll see you around, sweetheart. Enjoy your dinner.” With a wave, he led the dog away.
Once you shut your door, you stood there for a minute. “That was so weird.” You muttered to yourself.
Dean couldn’t get you out of your mind. You were nothing like the women he usually dated, but he was intrigued. You were gorgeous, but he had a feeling that you had no idea. Not with what you were wearing- a knee length skirt, a collared shirt, and a cardigan. Oh, and slippers. That he was pretty sure his mom had. Was that because you liked those clothes or because you were trying to cover up?
“Dean!” Sam snapped his fingers in front of his brother’s face.
“Oh, what?” He glanced over at him, acting like he hadn’t spaced out.
Sam gave him a bitch face at that. “I asked how you’re liking your new apartment.”
“I have a hot neighbor, so that’s cool.” He smirked. “Well, down the hall neighbor. Marshall slipped out and ran right to her door. She was cooking dinner and he could smell it.” It was hard not to get a bit hungry remembering how good that smelled. He wasn’t even usually a chicken guy! “I asked her out for the next day but she turned me down. Just an ‘I’m sorry, no’. Nothing more. But she knew Marshall and he got some scratches.”
“And you’re thinking about her now because…? Clearly she’s not interested. Are you just that shocked?” He asked, brows furrowed. “Most of the building knows him. He’s the friendliest tenant in the entire place.”
Dean chuckled, glancing over where Marshall was sleeping on his back by the window. “Yeah, he really is.” He agreed. “And she sounded more confused than uninterested, man.”
“What was her name? Maybe we know her?”
“Know who?” Jess asked as she walked in, causing Marshall to jump up and rush to her excitedly.
“Woman in the building Dean asked out. She said ‘no’.” Sam sounded extremely amused about this, earning an eye roll from Dean. “She knew Marshall, so I wonder if it’s one of the other students that we know in passing or someone we know a little more.”
“Y/N.” Dean looked between them. “What?” He asked when they shared a look.
Jess sat on the arm of the chair Sam was sitting in and he wrapped his arm around her hips. “Dean, Y/N is in her thirties.” She started. “And she’s sweet, but really shy. I’ve never seen her with anyone else.” Even if Jess saw you out and about? You were alone.
Dean looked confused. “What does her being in her thirties have to do with anything?” Did they think that would turn him off? “She’s hot. I wanna see what’s under her cardigan. And taste her cooking. God damn that smelled good.” He licked his lips.
“Don’t you normally date girls a couple years younger than you? Is this just some weird conquest thing?” Sam asked, eyebrow raised.
“Dude! No.” There was no way that Dean could explain it. It was like the universe put you in his path for a reason, and he had to find out why. You were meant to be in his life. “Are you guys friends?” He asked, hopeful. “If so, can you invite her to dinner for me?”
Jess sighed and shook her head. “No, we’re just friendly. Took her over a year to say more than a shy ‘hi’ to me.” Which was fine, not everyone was outgoing. “Now we’ll chat for a few minutes, but we’ve never hung out or anything. She’ll ask me about school, about Marshall, and things like that.”
He let out a breath at that. “Man.” Now he’d have to find another way to spend time with you, get to know you, and get you to agree to a date with him. “What time do you normally see her in the lobby?”
“You want to stalk her?” Sam raised an eyebrow. “As a future lawyer, and your brother, I should tell you that’s a bad idea.”
“No, I plan to just happen to be in the lobby at the same time as her. Total coincidence.”
Jess got up and shook her head. “You want to get to know her? You find out. I’m staying out of this. Are you staying for dinner?” Since he moved to the apartment a week and a half ago he was there for dinner half the time.
He shook his head at that. “Nah. Gonna run out and try that diner down the street.” He’d passed it a few times and wanted to try their cheeseburgers, with bacon if they had it.

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Willow, happy birthday to you!” Everyone sang before cheering. Your parent’s backyard was full of people celebrating your little girl.
There was no candle, so you helped her smoosh a corner of the cake in her little hand. There was a pause as she tried to process what the hell was going on before her fist was in her mouth, eyes wide. You giggled at that, kissing the top of her head. Lifting the cake to cut that corner piece off for you and serve everyone else, you earned a glare from your daughter. “I’ll give it right back.” You chuckled, working quickly. As soon as her small piece was on her high tray chair, she shoved both hands into it.
“I think she approves.” Eddie laughed. “Thank you again for baking it, Mrs. Wheeler. Y/N wanted to but she’s been working a lot.”
Karen smiled. “It’s no problem.” She assured him. “I’m glad she likes it.”
“How’s it feel to have a toddler?” Joyce asked with a smile. “I remember when the boys were little.” There was a nostalgic tone to her voice.
“I’m emotional.” You chuckled as you handed out cake. “We’re still young so wrapping my head around it is weird some days.” Which was completely understandable. You’d had her as a teenager, but thankfully you had graduated before you got pregnant! “I love watching her personality come through.”
“We’re gonna miss her when we’re away at college.” Dustin all but pouted. “Too bad she’s not talking yet. We won’t be able to call to talk to her.” He half joked.
There were some happy tears in your eyes. “You can call any time to say hi. I’m sure she’d be happy to just hear your voice. She’s grown up hearing all of you at least weekly. You’re family.” You cared about all of them a great deal.
“Awe, mom.” Dustin hugged you, making you laugh as the other kids gathered in for a hug.
The other moms watched, enjoying how they knew they had someone else looking out for their kids.
A couple weeks after Willow turned a year old, your parents asked to have her for a few days. They were planning a vacation and wanted time with her before they left. They would take her Thursday, and bring her home Sunday morning. You were off Friday, but Eddie worked. You planned to catch up on housework, then you’d have a date night that evening. At that date you planned to tell Eddie you were wrong about marriage not being for you. That you wanted nothing more to marry him. And that you’d like to try for a second baby after the two of you got married. Picturing how happy he would be made you beyond excited. It was so hard to not just blurt it out.
“I’ll see you after work, princess.” Eddie kissed you softly that Friday morning. “I can’t wait for our date tonight.”
You grinned at that, eager to call him your fiance later. “Me, too. I have a surprise for you.” You teased. “I think you’ll really like it.”
“Do I get a hint?” He tried, keeping you close.
Thinking for a moment, you tried to come up with something that would keep him thinking. “It’ll be the highlight of your year. Next to Willow’s birthday, of course.” You hoped that would be enough to keep him extra enthusiastic all day. Maybe his work day would go by quicker for him with that in mind.
“I can work with that.” He chuckled, giving you one more kiss. “I love you, don’t forget to relax for a bit today. Maybe take a bubble bath?” While he tried to give you time to relax by spending time with Willow, it was rare to have a completely quiet apartment to relax in.
“I love you, too.” After he left, you closed and locked the door. You’d get yourself another cup of coffee, read while you sipped it, and then you’d get to tidying up.
Right after lunch, you glanced at the clock. Just four hours until Eddie was home. You’d be taking that bubble bath in a couple hours so you could be clean and smooth for when he walked through that door. That way you could feel extra sexy while celebrating your engagement. Setting the plate you’d used for your sandwich in the drying rack, you heard the phone ring. Figuring it was your parents to let you talk to Willow or something, you quickly dried your hands and rushed to answer the phone. “Hello?”
“Can I speak with Y/N Y/L/N?” Came a voice you didn’t recognise, and she didn’t seem to be in a good mood. Not angry, but sad?
“This is.” You furrowed your brows, confused. Did you miss a bill payment? As far as you knew you were always on time! You and Eddie were meticulous with your budget. “Who is this?”
“I’m calling from Hawkin’s Memorial Hospital.” She explained softly.
Your stomach dropped. “Who’s hurt?” Leaning against the wall, every worse case scenario was making its way into your mind. Was Willow hurt? Were one of your parents in the hospital? Did Eddie get hurt?
“We have an Edward Munson here. You’re listed as his emergency contact.”
“I’ll be right there.” You breathed, praying that your boyfriend was okay. Without waiting to hear more, you hung up and rushed to put your shoes on. Your hands were shaking and you were terrified. What happened? How badly was he hurt? Pausing at the door for a moment, you moved the ring he’d given you to your left ring finger.
Reaching the receptionist, you were holding back tears. “I got a call for my boyfriend, Eddie.” You told her, earning a soft look.
“Let me get the doctor, sweetie.” She said gently. “Take a seat.”
With a slight nod, you felt a tear roll down your cheek as you sat down. It felt like ages before a doctor was approaching you. “Miss Y/L/N?” He asked.
You stood quickly, nodding. “Yes. How is he? What happened? Can I see him?” You asked each in quick succession.
“I’m so sorry.” His tone spoke volumes. “He was in an accident at the plant.”
“But they called me. Said he was here. It didn’t take me that long to get here.” He couldn’t be gone! You and him had to get married, raise Willow, and have more little Munsons! You needed him.
“He passed less than five minutes ago. We did everything we could.” He watched as your knees gave out. “Is there someone we can call for you?” There was no way he felt okay with letting you drive. Or he’d likely have you in a hospital bed.
Blinking, you blurted out the first name that came to mind. “Jim Hopper.” He’d been at Willow’s party and seemed nice. And he was a cop. So he was safe in your mind.
“Y/N?” Came Jim’s voice, making you look over to him. “They said you asked for me?”
“He’s gone.” Your voice cracked. “H-he just left this morning for work like any other day, and he’s gone.”
He sat next to you. “I’m sorry, kid.” Nothing about this was fair to you, or your daughter. “Did you want a ride home? I can bring Joyce over later for your car.” This way you’d have one less thing to worry about.

Your car still wasn’t done when you got back to the shop, but they ‘promised’ it would be done by 5 when they closed. “How about I bring you home and we can come back tomorrow after our morning classes?” Bones suggested. “You’ve had a long day.”
You caved. “Sure, but I’m making you dinner tonight as thanks unless you’re busy.” It was the least you could do, and the two of you could get used to spending time together this way.
Sitting across from him, you sipped your drink. “So, weird suggestion.” You started, making him raise his eyebrow in curiosity. “Maybe after dinner we should watch a movie? Cuddle up and hold hands so we don’t look extremely awkward when we need to around Jim. Us looking off will make him wonder if something is wrong.”
He nodded at that. “No wonder you have a high GPA.” He smiled. “Sure, did you have a movie in mind?” Dinner hadn’t been awkward so far at all, which was a pleasant surprise. He idly wondered if a friendship would have grown years ago if either of you had given the other the time of day.
“I figured you can go through my DVDs and pick. I’m a big fan of physical media. Sometimes I’ll sub to a streaming service for a month if there’s something I really want to watch and just binge stuff, but it’s not often.” You shrugged. “I’d rather spend what little money I have left after being an adult on other stuff.” Just the fact that you didn’t need a roommate was shocking. Your parents helped, and you were thankful for that. You worked part time, and they matched your paycheck. Your mother was a lawyer and your father was a doctor. They could have easily covered everything, but you didn’t want that. They were already funding your education! You looked forward to the day when you made enough to send them on a vacation to show your appreciation for them and everything they had done for you.
“If nothing sticks out I can log on to one of the services I share with Jim.” He offered. “And you can just use it whenever you want.”
You smiled softly at that. “Is that a perk of playing pretend with you?” You teased, making him laugh.
“One of them.” He grinned, and you had to admit the man had a heart stopping smile. “This is delicious, by the way. Where did you learn to cook?” It went way beyond a simple pasta dish.
“My nanny. From the ages of two until I was ten I had a nanny.” You explained. “She was a sweetheart. My mother was in and out of the house and having a nanny was just way easier for my parent’s schedule than trying to get babysitters. She believed that children are tiny humans and should be treated with respect and taught things from a young age. So she had me help cook, learn to do the laundry, how to properly clean, I can also sew and am decent at gardening.”
“Well, she’s not wrong. Children are tiny humans.” He chuckled. “But I really like that she seemed to want to invest time into you.”
“Too many adults see kids as something to control.” Which was an awful mindset to have in your opinion. “And I do, too. I was really sad when she left. But I was old enough that I had afterschool activities and my dad was working mostly morning and early afternoon hours so he could be home with me at dinner time.”
Bones nodded as he took a bite of his dinner, licking his lips. He didn’t notice how your eyes darted to his tongue for a moment. “What do your parents do?”
“Dad is a doctor, mom is a lawyer.” You smiled. “What about your parents?”
“My father is a doctor, like his father before him. And mom stayed at home.” He had so many fond memories because of that. “I’m an only child, how about you?”
You chuckled. “Your parents couldn’t handle another one of you? Is that why you’re so laid back now? You were a tornado as a kid?” Picturing Bones as being little was hard, but you bet he was adorable. “And same here. I think dad wanted another kid at one point but my mom’s law practice was her other baby.” Which was fine by you. Your mother had drive and worked very hard. “Dad kind of also wanted me to follow in his steps but that wasn’t for me.”
“I’ve always wanted to be a doctor. What made you realize it wasn’t for you?”
“When I was seven one of my dad’s patients passed. I saw how much it ate at him. He’d been her doctor for years, so he knew her really well.” The look of pain on your father’s face stayed with you. “I know I want to help people, but I haven’t decided how just yet. I was thinking maybe research.”
His face softened at that. “Yeah, I can’t imagine how hard that would be.” He agreed. “And there’s always biomedical science.” He pointed out. “But that’s really only if you don’t mind going for your PhD.” Not everyone wanted to go that far. “And if that’s something you can afford.”
“Price isn’t an issue. Both my parents make good money and started saving as soon as mom got pregnant with me. So that is a viable option.” It would likely be a nice surprise for your dad if you went that route. It was still in the medical field, after all. “I’ll look into what I would need to do.”
“Good luck.”
An hour into the movie and Bones was surprised to see you’d nodded off against him. He couldn’t blame you, though. You’d gotten some rough news that day, and your car was taking a lot longer than anticipated. Hearing his phone, he picked it up to see a text from Kirk. Will you be home any time soon? I was thinking about running out to get the stuff for ice cream sundaes.
I’ll be home shortly. She fell asleep so I’ll tuck her in and then be on my way. He sent.
Here I was thinking you were at the library studying lol Now I know where you are ;) Kirk replied, making him roll his eyes.
Just go get the stuff for sundaes and I’ll see you at home. He sent before putting his phone down to try to lift you. The fact that you felt safe enough to fall asleep next to him was touching. He would have thought that would never happen. Realizing that your entire disliking of each other was a huge misunderstanding was so funny it looped around to just sad. Once you were in his arms, you snuggled into his chest and he felt you relax even further. Crap. He thought to himself. He could not let himself get attached in any way, shape, or form.
Waking up hours later, you looked around confused. It was dark and you were in your room. “The hell?” You yawned, getting up to get a glass of water. Walking into your kitchen, you realized that Bones did the dishes. Spotting a note on your fridge you went and read it. Didn’t want to wake you up. Jim wanted to make sundaes (he will never grow up), so I cleaned up and headed home. Text me to let me know what time your first class is- mine is at 9.
-Leonard
While you clearly knew his name, seeing it in his handwriting was different. “Leonard.” You said softly to yourself. “Crap.” You groaned. “This is fake. Remember that.” You told yourself.

When you awoke the next morning, the first thing you saw was the most gorgeous bouquet of flowers you had ever seen. And the most expensive looking. Blinking the sleep from your eyes, part of you wondered if you were dreaming. “Hey, beautiful.” Came your boyfriend’s voice.
Your eyes traveled to where he was sitting in the chair next to your bed to see him move to sit next to you. “Bucky?” Your voice was soft, like if you spoke too loudly he’d vanish.
“I was asking to be discharged first thing this morning. I wanted to get to you so I could spend all day with you.” He took your hand in his. “How’re you feeling?” Bucky wished he could trade places with you and take any injuries you had away.
“Sore? Groggy? Emotional? Guilty?” You sighed. Overall you weren’t feeling great.
He gave you a confused look. “Why would you feel guilty? You didn’t do anything wrong.” Something told him you were just used to taking the blame for everything, and he wanted to help you stop doing that.
“I thought the worst of you.” How could you not feel guilty about that? “I thought you were seeing another woman, a better woman, and that I was stupid for not seeing it. Then I didn’t even let you explain.”
Bucky leaned forward so that he was leaning on his left arm, cupping your cheek with his right hand. “Baby, I get it.” He promised. “You walked into my apartment and saw heels that didn’t belong to you, and they clearly aren’t my size.” His tone made it obvious that he was trying to lighten the mood that surrounded you. He grinned when you chuckled lightly at that. “From now on the only heels I want at my apartment are yours. Even if I’ve never gotten to see them and really wish I could.”
There was a light pink tint on your cheeks at the implication behind his words. “Yeah, your shoes would have to be a bit bigger.” You agreed. “I am sorry, though.” Even if he wasn’t mad at you, you needed to apologize.
“Just promise that if you ever get those worries again you’ll talk to me. Or at least go back to Nat’s and talk to her.” Bucky really wanted things to work with you.
“Deal.” You agreed.
Leaning forward he kissed you softly for a moment before someone cleared their throat behind him. Both of you looked over to see Steve standing there with a stuffed bear and some flowers. He looked amused. “Glad to see you’re feeling better. Both of you.” He chuckled. As he moved towards your bedside, Bucky moved to sit on the other side.
“You didn’t need to fly in, Steve.” You hated that he was likely missing work for this. “A text would have been more than enough.”
He gave you a look as he set the flowers next to the ones Bucky gave you. “Like hell.” He sat on the side of the bed and held out the bear for you. “You’re family and I had to come check on you. I’m glad to see you’re awake.” There was a determination in your voice that told you not to argue with the man.
“Thanks.” It was still such a strange feeling to have people who truly cared about you. While it caused an internal battle between the scared little girl who was worried you would lose them, and the hopeful woman you were becoming…you liked it. You liked knowing you had people around you who cared how you were feeling, who wanted to spend time with you, and who included you in family plans. Was this what most people grew up feeling? Would you get lucky and have this for the rest of your life?
Bucky ran a hand through his hair, his nerves getting the better of him. It was your one year anniversary and he planned to propose. Things had been going really well, even when the two of you had little ‘lover’s spats’ as Tony called them. You’d gotten way better at telling him when you were upset, no matter how hard it was on you. You’d shake, come close to hyperventilating, and what would take most people just moments to explain took you a lot longer. Bucky would hold your hand, help you through it, and then the two of you would talk though the issue. And he knew he never wanted to help anyone else through those hard moments.
You’d been due home half an hour ago. Dinner was on the table and he was now pacing the living room. Your phone was going right to voice mail, and Nat hadn’t seen you. It was his turn to go to every worst case scenario. Knowing you went through this all the time made it even worse! Hearing your key in the door, he whipped his head up.
“I’m so sorry! My phone died and there was a delay on the buses.” You felt terrible. Setting your things down, you rushed over to hug him. “I asked an older lady to use her phone, but she didn’t even have one! She was the only approachable looking person on the bus.”
He held you close, burying his face in your neck. He just breathed you in, thankful that he wasn’t getting another call that you’d been hurt. “How about you change and we can start dinner?”
“I’m starving. How about we eat and then we can take a shower? You wash me up and I’ll wash your hair.” You moved to run your fingers through his hair. As you did you could see him physically relax.
“Can you be dessert?” He asked.
“Always.” You agreed.
Halfway through dinner, you set your fork down. “Are you okay?” You asked, sounding a bit worried. “You’ve seemed distracted. Did something happen at work?”
“No.” He paused for a moment. “Well, we did get a new janitor who is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.” He mused. “You’d like him.”
You chuckled at that. “Good to know.”
Wiping his mouth with his napkin, his eyes never left you. “No, uh, I had a really important question.”
“Bucky, if you want to get a cat, get a cat.” You grinned. “You keep dropping hints and sending me cute cat videos. Clearly you want one.” It was adorable to see this big buff man completely melt over cats. “We can go our next day off to find one.”
His face lit up at that. “That wasn’t my question, but now I’m excited.” He admitted.
You knew it wasn’t him asking for you to move in, because you moved in just two weeks prior. Yelena and Kate wanted to move in together, Clint and Nat wanted to live together, and you and Bucky agreed you’d love living together full time, too. “I’m at a loss, then. Nothing else is coming to mind.”
Getting up, he held out his hand for you when he got around the table. He pulled you close, hoping that you didn’t say ‘no’. “I love you, and love getting to wake up next to you every day. I want nothing more than to wake up to you every day for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?”

Part 4 of How’d That Happen?

Bones was at his desk studying one afternoon when his phone rang. He didn’t recognize the number, but something told him to answer it anyway. “Hello?” He asked as he sat back in his chair.
“It’s Y/N. Jim gave me your number in case I needed to call you for him or something.” You said quickly to explain how you had his number when you weren’t friends.
He furrowed his brows and then sighed. “What did he do?” He pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Oh, nothing.” You assured him. “I’m calling for me. He’s at work.”
That confused him further. “Uhhh what can I do for you?”
“All my friends are busy, so you were my last resort.” You told him, and for some reason that bothered him a touch. “My car is in the shop. It was supposed to be done like half an hour ago. I have an appointment to get to across town. I don’t trust a ride share to get here in time. Can I give you some gas money to bring me? I’m so sorry.”
He could tell that you truly didn’t want to ask him but were backed into a corner. “Sure.” He found himself instantly agreeing. “Just text me where you are and I’ll come get you.” Getting up, he went to get his shoes on.
“Thanks.” With that, you hung up and texted him where you were and where you needed to go. He paused when he saw it was the hospital.
Pulling into a parking space, he surprised you by shutting off the car. “Oh, you can head home. You don’t have to stay.”
“You still have to get back, and this is a hospital. That tells me it’s not some generic appointment.” When you looked away and swallowed, he knew he was right. “What’s wrong, and does Jim know?”
Sighing, you shook your head. “I’ve been getting short of breath a lot lately, and there’s been what feels like a lump on my throat. I’m getting an MRI today to see what’s going on. And no…he has no idea.” You didn’t want to worry your best friend if it turned out to be nothing.
He felt for you. “Does anyone know?”
“No.” What could you say? You would have no answers for any questions that they had. “And will they let you back there with me? Isn’t it like family or significant others only?”
“Yeah, that is true.” But he didn’t want you stuck doing this alone. “Well…”
You looked at him, confused. “Well what?” You could all but see the gears in his head turning.
He grinned at you. “We could pretend?” He suggested. “Just tell them we’re dating and they’ll let me back there.” While he wasn’t a fan of lying usually, it was for a good cause. “We hold hands to sell it, then when we leave it’s over.”
You playfully narrowed your eyes at him. “You’re the devious one between you and Jim aren’t you?” You chuckled as you thought it over. “But why the hell not? What could it hurt?”
Okay, so you shouldn’t have asked that. “Hey, it’ll be okay.” Bones said gently as he drove you home.
“I need half my thyroid removed.” You glanced at him. “And I’ve never had surgery before. I’m just lucky I can put it off until after I graduate.” Missing classes wasn’t something you were okay with. You would worry far too much about your grades dropping or missing something really important.
“I’m sure the school would have worked with you.”
“I maintain a very high grade point. That dropping because of missing classes would have probably sent me spiraling.” You admitted. Hearing your phone, you glanced at it and saw it was Kirk. “Hey, aren’t you supposed to be working?”
“I’m on break.” He explained. “And why did I have to hear it from someone else that you and Bones are dating? And that you were at the hospital?” He sounded honestly hurt. “I’m really glad you two are getting along, and I think you’ll honestly last. Your personalities will work now that you’re not butting heads.” He rambled. “But if you guys have sleep overs, do it at your house? I don’t want to hear someone who is like my sister like…that.” Kirk gagged dramatically, making you chuckle. “Ah, shit. I gotta go. We will be talking later.”
“Bye.” You said to your phone after he’d hung up. “So, uh…” You chuckled awkwardly. “That was Jim.”
“Oh boy.” Bones chuckled. “What did he have to say? Clearly you didn’t get to reply.”
You winced. “He’s hurt that he had to hear it from someone else that me and you are dating, that I was in the hospital, and that he thinks we’ll last.” There was a tint to your cheeks. “That our personalities will work since we’re not butting heads. Oh, and that if we have sleepovers they need to be at my place.”
He knew that when the two of you told Jim that it was a lie he’d be a bit bothered. “Well…”
“Last time you said that you decided to pretend to be my boyfriend to go in with me. What now?” You raised an eyebrow, curious.
“What if we just fake date for now? We can let Jim be happy that we’re getting along, and then amicably break up in a bit.” He shrugged. Now that he’d actually gotten to know you a little bit he didn’t feel like being snarky towards you like he previously had. Now he saw why you and Jim were best friends.
“What about when he asks why we aren’t holding hands, cuddling, kissing, or anything that normal couples do? Jim knows what I’m like in relationships. He knows I’m a touchy type of person. He won’t buy it if he never sees us act like that.” From what you knew of Bones he wasn’t like that. He seemed stiff, not a PDA type of person. Which was perfectly okay, but not someone you’d be with. You would be incompatible.
He thought about that for a moment as he came to a stop at a red light. “Well it wouldn’t be hard to hold hands around him or lean against each other on the couch to watch movies.” It wasn’t like you two actually had to sleep together after all. “I can always sleep on your couch now and then so he sees me ‘staying’ at your place now and then.”
Chewing on your lip you were debating it when your phone dinged. It was a text from Uhura. Omg. Yay! I just heard about you and Leonard! SO CUTE!!! Double date soon??? “Looks like I’m about to agree to this and hope it doesn’t blow up in our faces.” You let out a breath. “I will be your fake girlfriend. And Uhura wants a double date soon.”
He laughed at that, clearly amused. “Of course she does. And this helps us get Jim to class.”
“How the hell does us fake dating get Jim to class?” Those two things had nothing to do with each other.
“Think about it. He agreed to be on time for his classes, and finish top ten, on one condition: I learn to have fun and go out with you two more often.” He pointed out. “Us ‘dating’ means I will automatically be going out more.” And it would likely mean taking you on ‘dates’, as well. Giving Jim the impression he’s having even more fun.
That hadn’t crossed your mind, and you knew he wasn’t wrong. “That’s true.” You nodded. “Did we want to set an end date or just touch base now and then until we both decide it’s run its course?”
“Run its course? Check in every couple weeks?” That seemed to be a good balance to him.
Pairing: Eddie x Reader

Summary: Steve and the kids come to the rescue when Willow is teething.
Part 7 of Welcome to Hawkins
Read on AO3
You cried yourself to sleep on the couch not long after Eddie left. Your world was crumbling down around you and it felt like you’d never heal. Not even 20 and likely a single mother. Your daughter wasn’t even a year and she would grow up in a broken home. All because you were honest.
Eddie walked back in around midnight and sagged. He couldn’t stay away from you, and his uncle told him running away wasn’t the answer. Seeing you curled up on the couch hurt. Gently shutting the door, he made sure to lock it before going to lift you. As soon as you were in his arms you curled into him. “I’m here, princess.” He said softly. “I’ll always be here.”
Feeling yourself be put down, you blinked. “Eddie?” You yawned. “You’re home?” Were you dreaming?
Once he got his sneakers off, he crawled up the bed to hold you. “I’m not going anywhere.” He promised. “I had a talk with my uncle, then just laid on his couch thinking. I’d rather spend the rest of my life as your boyfriend than not be with you. If one day you want to get married, awesome. I’ll marry you in a heartbeat.” He gave you that goofy loving smile. “If not? I’m still so fucking lucky to have you. Okay? I love you, and I’m still giving you that ring I bought. Just call it a present. Not an engagement ring.” His thumb rubbed your cheek gently. His eyes were full of love for you.
Gripping the front of his shirt, you pulled him into a deep kiss, pouring all your love for him into that kiss. You had been so sure that he would leave you, that what you said would push him away. His love for you was so deep that he put aside his desire to marry you. Just to be together. “I’m sorry I hurt you.” You said, barely pulling away.
“You never have to be sorry about being honest.” Even if it hurt, he never wanted you to feel that you couldn’t tell him the truth. “Let’s get some sleep, okay?”
You nodded, eyes heavy. You were exhausted from crying. “I don’t work until after lunch tomorrow, can we have a family day?” You really needed that.
Eddie gave you a heart stopping smile. “It’s a date.”
You wore the ring he gave you happily on your right hand. It was beautiful and you were beyond thankful you had a caring boyfriend. “Hey, Y/N!” Steve greeted you at work not long after you started your shift.
Smiling, you put up the cereal that was in your hand. “Hey, how are you?” The last time you saw him was in passing when he dropped the kids off for D&D a few weeks prior. Dustin said Steve had a date to get to that night.
“Good, how’s Willow? Dustin was raving about how much she loves him the other day.” He laughed.
Nodding, you kept working as you chatted. “She loves all of them.” You agreed. “It’s like playing musical baby during our runs, but sometimes she picks one person to cling to. The last run was Dustin, but as long as Max kept playing with her.” It had been so cute that you took pictures. “Dustin said you had a date the last time you dropped them off? How’d that go?”
He made an ‘eh’ face while making the ‘so-so’ motion with his hand. “I’ve had worse, but there were no sparks.”
“That’s a bummer. At least she wasn’t crazy?” That was a small bonus in your mind.
“This is true.” You chuckled at his facial expression. “So, when’s the next run? Figured I’d hang out.”
You thought for a moment. “Wednesday night at 5. Everyone is coming over for dinner, then we’ll do the run.” It turned out the parents liked that the runs were at your apartment. They all liked you, trusted you, and knew the kids were somewhere safe (and being fed most of the time). “I’m making lasagna and garlic bread.”
“Can I bring anything?” He didn’t want to just show up and eat without contributing.
“Maybe something to drink? And the kids?” You added playfully. “We look forward to seeing them.” You were attached, and would miss them when they went off to do their own things.
Steve chuckled and nodded. “I’m pretty sure I can manage that.”
“Oh, and do you know Max’s step-brother?” You glanced at him for a moment. “He showed up yesterday pounding on our door. He gave me the damn creeps.” Shuddering at the memory, you pushed his face from your mind. “Acted like he didn’t believe me that she wasn’t there then made a disgusting comment.”
All humor vanished from his face. “Billy, yeah I know him. I can’t stand that asshole.”
“Language, young man!” An older woman passing scolded him.
“What did he say?” Steve asked, ignoring the scolding.
Pausing in your stocking, you sighed. “He checked me out and then told me ‘give me a call if you get tired of this freak and want a real man’.” You scoffed. “Like he would know what that is.” The disdain in your voice was clear.
“Gross.” He muttered. “Hopefully he’ll leave you alone.”
“Thanks.” You hoped so, too.
“Y/N?” Came your boss's voice, making you look over. “Carol needs to leave early, can you take over on the register?” He asked.
“Of course. I’ll be right there.” Turning to Steve, you gave him a smile. “Thanks for the chat. I’ll see you Wednesday.”
“See you then.” He gave you a wave and went back to his shopping.
Come Wednesday, Willow was cranky. She was teething and miserable. Neither you nor Eddie seemed to be able to help her much. You were currently holding a cool wet rag against her gums as Eddie stirred the sauce for you. Hearing a knock at the door, you sighed. “Can you get that? I move my hand and she’s going to freak.”
“Of course.” He agreed, going to do just that. “Hey, man.” Eddie greeted Steve. “Hey, guys.” He grinned at everyone else.
“Where’s Willow?” Dustin asked, making Steve chuckle.
“In the kitchen. She’s teething, so no promises that she’ll want to be held.” Eddie warned them moments before they heard Willow crying. “The rag probably isn’t cool anymore.” Turning, he went to go help you.
Steve and the others followed. “Why don’t you get it kind of wet, then put it in the fridge for a bit? Would that keep it cool longer?” He suggested.
You glanced at him, shocked you hadn’t thought of that. “God, you're brilliant.” You would try almost anything to help your daughter. “Babe, can you wet this one in the meantime, and get another one to put in the fridge wet?”
“Want me to call my mom and ask if there’s anything that helps?” Mike asked. “She had three kids, so she probably figured something out.” He pointed out. When you nodded, a thankful look on your face, he snapped his fingers. “On it.” Going to your phone, he quickly dialed his number. As he did that, Max tried to distract Willow. “Hey, mom? Do you have any ideas on how to help with teething?” He listened intently, wanting to help however he could.
Willow was chewing roughly on the rag, leaning into you. “Want me to take her so you can assemble the lasagna?” Eddie offered.
Nodding, you passed her over and went to do that. “Okay, she said that she remembers all the tips she was told, but can’t remember which ones she tried.” Mike spoke up. “First, she said a little bit of cold butter on the gums?” He sounded confused. “Apparently the cold helps, and it helps them be less puffy.”
“That’s so weird.” Max muttered.
“A frozen washcloth. Freeze it for about half an hour and let her chew on it.” He went on. “Rubbing the gums gently with a finger, or a tiny bit of whiskey on the gums. She’s pretty sure she didn’t try that one, though. The last one was baby Tylenol.”
You were in the middle of putting noodles in the dish when he said that. “Oh my God. How the hell did we not think of that?!” She’d been teething for two days, so you were blaming it on that. “Can you run and get some?” You glanced at Eddie.
“Hey, she’s content right now. I’ll run and get it.” Steve spoke up. “Henderson, you’re with me. Let’s go.” He motioned to the door. “I’ll also get those drinks I forgot.”
“Man, I lost my girl to a baby.” Lucas joked as Steve and Dustin left.
“She is cute.” El smiled at her. “Hopefully this passes soon for her.” Her voice was soft, and Willow’s gaze went to her. She had been the most wary of El at first for some reason, but very quickly warmed up to her. When Willow reached for her El went over to scoop her up. “Hey, pretty girl.” She rested her cheek on the top of her head, wrapping the rag around her finger to let her chew on it.
You and Eddie shared a thankful look between the two of you. They were all just teenagers, but already so thoughtful and caring. Willow would have amazing people to look up to.

Summary: Nat visits you and Bucky is pissed he can't be with you
Part 17 of Broken
Read on AO3
Nat slipped into your room and her heart ached. “Oh, babe.” She said softly to herself. Whether you were simply resting your eyes or actually unconscious, she wasn’t entirely sure. She sat on the side of your bed and took your hand in hers. Her eyes watered as she took in the scene more. “I wish my brother wasn’t so stupid and had warned you that Peggy was visiting. Then you wouldn’t be lying here and he wouldn’t also be in a hospital bed.” Her thumb rubbed your hand gently. “You’d be at his apartment curled up together watching a movie or something, and then tomorrow you’d be coming home.” All this over Bucky forgetting to open his mouth.
She did not move from that spot, simply pulling out her phone to text the group chat to give any updates that might happen. It took a couple hours, but you finally made a noise. “Ow.” You groaned, cracking your eyes ever so slightly. “Where am I?”
“The hospital.” Nat gave your hand a small squeeze. “Tony saw you get loaded into an ambulance and we all raced here. Yelena and Alexei are with Bucky. Everyone else, including Steve, is in the lobby.” You gave her a slightly confused look, because why wouldn’t they all be together? “Bucky panicked so bad in the lobby trying to get to you that he went down and is now in his own hospital bed.” She explained. “He’s not very happy he didn’t get to you.”
“He’s not with whoever those heels belong to?” You swallowed. They were some very nice heels, and you knew they weren’t cheap. Why would he choose to spend his time with someone as broke as you instead of someone who clearly had money?
Nat gave you a soft look. “Those heels belong to a group friend- Peggy. Her and Steve had a short lived fling back in college.” She explained. “She lives in England but comes to the states for business now and then. Bucky lets her use his guest room when she’s in the city and forgot to give you a heads up.” Which was still extremely annoying to her! “She’s loaded so I can’t understand why she just doesn’t get a hotel room.”
You stared at her for a moment. “So I overreacted? Like a lot?” You felt the guilt wash over you. “I thought the worst of him.” Your voice was barely above a whisper, like you were afraid to say it to his sister. How angry was he with you? Did you just kill your relationship? Every worst case scenario bombarded you, causing your heart rate to spike. Your machine went off moments before a nurse came rushing in.
“It’s okay. You’re okay.” She assured you, moving around Nat as she moved away from the bed. “Does anything hurt?” She asked as she stopped the alarm on your machine.
“Not really. Just sore in some spots.” And your heart ached like crazy.
She gave you a soft smile. “So, do you remember what happened?” Many patients remembered right up until an accident, but not the accident itself. So she half expected you to say that you had no idea.
Yelena and Alexei were in Bucky’s room (who was sulking that he wasn’t getting discharged until the following morning to be safe), not wanting to leave until visiting hours were over. When all three of their phones went off, they all checked the group text.
She said that she vaguely remembers some guy ramming into her, sending her into the street. So, we’re pretty sure she was hit by a damn car. Just thankful people can’t go too fast in the city because it’s too busy. Nat updated them. Then, just to Bucky, she texted an update on the Peggy situation. Once the nurse is gone I’ll make sure to tell her that you aren’t mad at her. She’s really worried about that. She panicked and her heart monitor went off.
He sagged slightly at that. Tell her I can’t wait to say I’m sorry in person. He replied to her easily. And that I’ll visit her as soon as I’m allowed. Setting his arm down, he sighed. “This is bullshit.” He muttered.
“I agree.” Alexei nodded. “You being away from the woman you love while she’s injured simply because of worry is bullshit.”
Bucky and Yelena stared at him. “Love?” He blinked. “We haven’t been together that long.”
“So?” Alexei raised an eyebrow. “Is there some rule that says you cannot love someone in under a certain amount of time?” He asked simply. “The heart cannot help who it feels called to. You love Y/N/N like Lena loves Kate or like Natasha loves Barton.”
Was his father right? Did he love you?
Before Nat left you asked her for your things. You hoped that your phone wasn’t broken so that you could text Bucky. Hearing he was in the hospital because he was so worried about you was shocking. She shocked you when she kissed the top of your head before saying goodnight, promising to visit after work the following day.
Once alone, you powered on your phone. I am so sorry. Was the very first thing you sent to Bucky. I understand if you’re done with me. I know Nat said you’d visit me when you could but I wouldn’t blame you for changing your mind. Hitting send, you blinked away the tears that were forming.
Bucky was half-asleep, his mind on Alexei’s words when his phone roused him from his semi-slumber. Seeing it was you had him instantly wide awake. He was replying the moment he finished reading. Baby, no. I am so sorry. None of this would have happened if I had remembered to give you a heads up! I had planned to have you move your things to my room while she was here (well, you could have just stayed there after, too) and everything. I just got so caught up with work and enjoying coming home to you that I forgot. That’s 100% on me. I can’t blame you for how you reacted, either. If roles were reversed and I came home to your place to see some guy’s sneakers? I would have thought the same thing! He hoped that this cleared things up enough until he could visit you, which would hopefully be the next day. And I will be in that damn hospital room as soon as I’m discharged. That dick that rammed into you is lucky I don’t know who he is.
If you like my work please reblog and/or comment. It means a lot to me :) Thank you for reading.
