I miss when we were all like “yeah here’s my mom’s docs from the 90s I use to garden in” or like “here’s a thrifted dress I got for 4 dollars” and just generally the disconnect from capitalism and the interest in self sustainability and self sufficiency and living off of yourself …: I miss it

Occasionally I get well-meaning asks or replies saying that cottagecore is racist/transphobic so I should delete my blog. Most of the people saying this are high schoolers, so I’m not gonna put anyone on blast here, but I’d like to point out an important distinction. Enjoying the cottagecore aesthetic because you wish you could afford a house and clothes you like and have enough free time to bake your own bread and knit does not mean you support the displacement of indigenous people in the name of homesteading, nor is it anywhere near the same thing as the christofaschist “traditional femininity” propaganda that tradwives spread. The problem is that they saw the cottagecore trend as an opportunity to convince young women that the only way to achieve that lifestyle was to embrace toxic, misogynistic, “traditional” (i.e, western evangelical) gender roles. The solution is not to abandon cottagecore/simple living/etc, but to push the bigots out. Happy scrolling 🌻🐞🥖🍓
Exactly. Cottagecore was intended as a space by and for the queer community to run away into the woods away from a hetero/cisnormative world and enjoy those “farmhouse” aesthetics without the Christian bigotry. But when it started to get popular, of course the bigots came flooding in because on the surface and when you ignore everything but the surface level aesthetics, it’s everything they love. We need to gatekeep and we need to gatekeep HARD, and we need to constantly remind people that “cottagecore” is by and for queer people.
Genuinely, cottagecore tumblr is one of the only places online where I feel like I can actually be around people and talk about gay shit.
Like, I know there are plenty of gays outside of tumblr on other sites like twitter and instagram and tiktok, and I'm on a few lgbt subreddits, but I fucking swear, anytime I open my damn mouth about "cottagecore" (The cottagecore community. the word itself. not nature in general, not vintage aesthetic, not homesteading, etc, just this specific community) being by and for queer folks, I'm met with the most intense fucking hatred.
And the reason I don't shut my damn mouth about it is because sometimes I just don't want to see cis straight people. Sometimes I just want to exist in a space that doesn't revolve around cis straight people, and that's what cottagecore was supposed to be in the first place.
But no, it got trendy and the straighties saw it, said "Oh, I love that style!" or "Oh I live on a farm with my husband and 7 kids!" or "Oh this is sooo modest and godly" and they shoved themselves into the cottagecore community. I can't fucking stand it.
Heaven forbid I say something about where the term came from, and heaven forbid the queer community has anything to ourselves. Especially with everything going on right now, it's nice to just, exist in a queer space and decompress.
I feel like this doesn't even need to be said, but cishets don't interact. I don't want to talk to a single straight person today.

Queer women (yes there were/are plenty of mlm in this space BUT) have always had ways of identifying each other, that straight women saw, thought was neat, and stole. Chokers, cropped hair, flannels, straight bangs, colorful hair and alt clothing, and now the most recent is cottagecore. Not everyone goes out dressed in hyper feminine clothing with a straw hat on top. Mostly just the “cottagecore lesbians”. But it got popular, cis straight women saw it and went “oh! I love very feminine ‘traditional’ country things and cooking at home for my husband! I love cottagecore!” And now we have cottagecore groups on Facebook where I don’t feel comfortable bringing something like this up because I’ll be told that I’m “gatekeeping”

Okay, this makes me very, VERY irritated. So why on earth would anyone go out and buy their uwu cottagecore aesthetic maxi dresses from fucking Amazon or H&M of all places? It just makes me angry that fast fashion and consumerism is trying to shove its stupid little nose into this little subculture and profit off of it. WITHOUT EVEN GIVING CREDIT TO THE GAYS IT CAME FROM.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but going to thrift stores and buying all the usable sheets and t-shirts and jeans and then cutting them up to make rag rugs or yarn or whatever for your shabby chic/cottagecore aesthetic isn’t solar punk.

You are taking resources away from people who need them so that you can pretend to live a less consumptive lifestyle. You are cosplaying sustainability.
The whole fucking point of rag rugs etc. was that you made use of textiles you already had that could no longer be used for their intended purpose, and you extended the lifecycle of the item by turning it into something else useful instead of throwing it in the garbage. When you buy clothing that still has use *as clothing* just to cut it into rags to make a rug, you’re *speeding up* the consumption of materials. You’re shortening the lifecycle. You are consuming MORE.
And you’re doing it by buying up resources that marginalized people need. Those thrift store sheets would look so much better on somebody’s fucking bed, but since you wanted that Little House on the Prairie vibe, someone is sleeping on a bare mattress now whilst trying to save their pennies to go to fucking Wal-Mart for bedsheets. And that denim throw pillow probably looks adorable on your sofa, but somebody needed a pair of sturdy jeans for that job they’re trying to get, and now there’s nothing available.

This is not true.
1) honeybees do not produce “extra honey.” And beekeepers don’t take some of the honey, they take all of it.
2) chickens have been artificially selected from naturally producing eggs once a month to producing eggs every couple of days. Their bodies are not sustainable and the health complications of this rapid egg production kills chickens.

Beekeepers make sure hives are fed before there is pollen in the air, protected from predators and the elements, and have enough honey to sustain themselves. We don’t take all of it.
But overproduction of honey leads to stagnation in the hive. It puts stress on the queen to lay eggs, and when they inevitably fill up all their space with honey (instead of filling up the multiple empty, clean boxes of frames beekeepers might put on top of the main hive box), the queen can get so stressed she dies. If there’s a spike in the weather and the hive hasn’t prepared new queen brood, that’s it! The colony is dead. Because there wasn’t enough space for eggs and honey in the hive.
Beekeepers take excess honey. We are constantly monitoring the state of the hive, checking for parasites, analyzing the eggs for diseases, and making sure they are fed and healthy (usually with sugar water and pollen substitutes until they have made enough honey to sustain themselves in the early spring months). If a queen dies prematurely, we make every attempt to replace her to save the colony.
I know there’s an urge to patronize everyone who works in the farming industry, but try to understand the differences between small scale agriculture and industrial farming. There IS a difference. And stop spreading misinformation.
If you’re this passionate about ethical consumption, look into some of the ecofeminist research on non-hierarchal interspecies relationships (working on building animal-human relationships in a non exploitative way).

Yea Chickens are some of the most abused animals on big factory farms and I’ll be the first to admit it’s criminal and more needs to be done to regulate this.
Yes selective breeding over time has caused an increase in the ammount of eggs produced by chickens and factory farms have some messed up practices to get more eggs from them including forced moutling.

Many people take to raising their own hens because of America’s immoral treatment of hens in factory farms like you’re not helping the poor chicks by starving these farmers financially you’re just hurting the one people trying to change things and making the OPTION of cage free organic cruelty free eggs even harder to find
Yeah, as someone who like… lives on a chicken and duck farm… Coops help keep wild animals out but birds are kinda dumb. And chickens literally do not need to keep the unfertilized eggs!
Most chickens will sit on unfertilized eggs until they can tell if they are or not… By the smell of rotting egg. Yeah, ew. Farmers can hold that bitch to the flashlight and tell if there’s a baby in there! They know! The eggs are not being abused!
Also - once a month? Like thousands of years ago maybe? Because Grandpa had chickens he literally let just roam around his farm and built coops and scattered corn for them and I helped collect the eggs, and believe me, those chickens each laid more than once a month.
