Anyone know WHAT THAT STITCH IS that's used on the cactus? Looks like they're tying knots around the needle and pulling the thread through the middle and it's AWESOME but I've never seen it done before and gotta know what it's called.

@raychleadele I believe the green is a bullion stitch (though not a standard one) and the flowers are either a French knot or a colonial knot - not sure on that one

Hello! I just received my very first sewing machine as a gift and if it’s not a bother i’m wondering if you have any tips or suggestions on where/how to start learning sewing? I’m very excited to use it but i’m at a loss as to where to begin. Thank youuu!

Hey! It’s not a bother at all! Pretty much all of my sewing skills come from this website: https://cholyknight.com/tutorials/ She has a BUNCH of free patterns, and they are all very very well explained. If this is your first sewing machine, I recommend reading the manual that came with it (or looking up the manual online), especially the parts about threading the needle, needle selection (as far as I know, it should match the fabric you’re using), stitch selection, bobbin winding, and thread tension. It sounds like a lot, but there are so many awesome how-tos online for all of it if you get stuck. If you search “machine name + whichever thing you’re having trouble with” you will probably find someone made a youtube video explaining exactly how to do the thing you’re trying to do with your sewing machine. I started sewing exclusively with fabric I got from remnants bins. If you’re making stuffed animals, fleece and minky are good, but I’ve been told minky can be a pain to work with as a beginner. If you’re making not stuffed animals, I have very little advice, but hopefully someone else will chime in? Idk how feasible remnants bins are during the pandemic (are they...still doing them? idk) but if they are still extant Joann’s fabric remnants are I think half price and then frequently on sale for between 25-60% off of that. I got like a half yard of fleece for less than a dollar once. I think that’s all I have advice-wise? Have fun! If you have a more specific question later on as you start to figure out what you like to make or which things you’re having trouble with, feel free to ask!

If your local library is open, it may have some “learn-to-sew” books. (Mine only has about three or four, plus a lot of “here’s projects you can sew if you don’t know how to sew” books, which are great for making stuff, but not so great for learning how to sew.) I’m sure there’s guides online too, but I have an excellent old one from my grandmother, so I haven’t had to use online ones.

Having a guide is useful before you get a pattern (even if it’s a step-by-step, hold a beginner’s hand pattern & tutorial), because it lets you know what’s out there and what’s possible, which can help you decide what you want to try doing.

I kind of jumped straight in to sewing clothes for myself. (They weren’t good clothes, but they were clothes.) Normally I’d say to go to your local store & ask them for advice, but... Because I was still at home, I could ask my mom for advice, and I just grabbed some Simplicity beginner patterns. The instructions were almost enough for me to know what I was doing. (I might have been ok, but my mom wanted to make sure I did things properly, like which direction to sew in.) If you want to try clothes, there’s a lot of tutorials online for stuff like basic shorts or shirts. Pyjamas are a traditional place to start, because they aren’t out in public much.
