“Exactly the one-” Puck said as he crouched down to the boys level, a grin spreading across his face and a glint in his eyes. “Though the king apologizing? Very much an exaggeration, Auberon is far too proud for that.” He tilts his head just enough for his hair to fall and reveal the point of one of his ears.
“Now tell me little one, what reason could there be for someone as young as you to have surgery on something as risky as your hands?”Puck was watching him, looking for any signs of a lie. There were many people in this world who had no problem using children for their own gain - and the Trickster was very aware of that.
"I don't know, the Queen handed his butt to him in the water fight," Harper insisted, crossing his arms about that. It had been a really cool fight, and he'd been in the third row. Of course, it was the Queen who had the biggest water pistol.
"My mom needed to check on stuff, that's all," He said. Mom had told him he needed to start being careful who he told. He didn't know much about 'intellectual property laws', and also figured, he probably didn't need to yet. "It wasn't supposed to be that risky."
“Like shakespeare.” Puck corrected, leaning closer to inspect the boys hand well being careful not to get too far into his space. Some kids are spooked easily, better to be careful about it. The mostly healed cuts on his hands though caused a dark look to flash in his eyes before he pushed it away before it could really settle.
They were too clean to have been some kind of accident, but what on earth would require someone to cut into a child's hand like that? “And what happened here? Seems too clean to have been some kind of accident.”
"Oh. The night dream one, with the fairies," Harper said. "We went on a field trip to see that. The fairies had a water fight in the middle when the king went to apologize or whatever."
He let Puck take a look at his hand for a bit and took it back, shaking it a few more times. "I had to have surgery, that's all. It'll be fine when it heals up a bit more."
"Oh please don't call me Sir, it makes me sound dreadfully boring. Robin, though most call me Puck." The Imp walked around so he was in front of the child, eyeing his hand as he spoke. "And that was not cramping, didn't seem like a tremor either - so I'll ask again. Are you alright?"
"Like a hockey puck? That's kind of cool," Harper said. The man approached a bit, but he didn't really mind. He held out his hand, the surgical cuts mostly healed now. "It just hurt a bit, that's all. I needed to stretch."

"Huh?" Harper turned around. He hadn't even heard someone creeping up behind him. He lowered his hand; he'd been shaking it out, the cramping new after his mom's latest updates to his chips. "Yeah, sorry. My hand was just cramping a bit, sir, that's all."
"Anything could happen, people get sick or hurt without planning to all the time. We just need to figure out if we need to do any thing special if that happens to you." He tilted his head slightly to the side as he thought about it for a second and then told him.
"Scan would probably be faster, more through and least invasive. And I can order us some take out to my lab if you tell me what you want, then I can tell you all about my bad luck during a school trip to Oscorp." Though if Norman had known he was Tony's son at that point he probably never would have been allowed on the trip.
"My chips don't get sick," Harper pointed out. They weren't connected to the wifi, either, he wasn't about to become bugged. It was fine! "They just glitch sometimes, that's not sick, and mom's going to fix it."
"Then do that," Harper said, shoving his fingers under his arms as he wrapped them around tightly. "All this was bad luck? That seems silly."
"No, you're not," Lilia insisted, her eyes seeing something beyond what was right in front of her. "She might have created you for it, timed every part, but it's her, not you, that's in competition."
Lilia could See a mother orchestrating the creation of a particular child, her mind focused on beating someone else the entire time. Her personal project like an exam she wanted to pass first.
"You're worried," Lilia realised aloud, pulling back a little as it came to her. "You don't know what she's going to do to you next."
Harper's mouth twitched as he mulled over her words. But it couldn't be true, not really. A few fleeting words from a woman in a shop wasn't much compared to all his mothers' teachings. To be first in his class at all times, first in science fairs. He shook his head. "They wouldn't have student rankings if that wasn't true, or grades at all!"
His eyes dropped then, and he pulled his hand back. "That's not fair."
“Maybe, but we need to make sure if anything happens we know how to help you. We aren't going to do anything to you without talking about it first, and even then only if it's necessary medically.” Peter told him, really he'd been hoping he could bribe the kid with a visit to see his Mom and it would be enough.
“Uh...kinda?” He shrugged lightly, his Dad and Bruce knew more about it than him. He could look at the files any time he wanted, but everything they had learned was when he was younger and he'd avoided knowing more than he had to about the specifics. Knowing had felt scarier than not knowing back then. “It was more complicated than just radiation, and it wasn't intentional.”
"What would happen?" Harper couldn't think of anything. No one but mom could do the updates to his chips, he didn't think, and they weren't exactly causing him problems other than the glitches. The embedding she'd done meant they wouldn't move, so what would even happen?
He didn't have much of a choice either way, not in his opinion. He didn't know why he was surprisised, he never did get much choice when it came to stupid things like this. "Whatever. The faster one."
Harper frowned and looked at Peter. "It wasn't?"
"We're getting what we can, she didn't exactly hide tools as well as she did notes about... her work." What she'd done to him, what the extent was. They were all worried about it, especially Tony. And Peter knew what it was like to feel the pressure of responsibility at a young age; he wanted to help Harper acclimate to his new normal as much as possible.
"Not a trick, just options." He told him with a shrug. "Occasional X-Ray's aren't gonna hurt you, but that doesn't mean avoiding them isn't better. But Happy figured that going to a hospital to have it done in relative public, where there were nurses and doctors instead of a lab at Stark Industries or mine or Dad's personal labs might be more comfortable for you."
"That's not options. It's you looking inside me versus you looking inside me somewhere else." Harper insisted. Mom didn't usually talk about tests like this before they happened, he didn't have the chance to work himself up and get anxious.
"Weren't you 'radiated' or something?" Harper asked. This time, he was more curious about it.
"Maybe she doesn't, but that doesn't mean we don't." Peter told him with a shrug; they had found some of her notes and records, but it was pretty clear that it was incomplete to anyone who looked at it. Not that a lot of people had, Tony, Peter, Pepper and Esther the head of R&D at Stark Industries were the only ones given clearance.
Tony had been sure to have his lawyers fight with the argument that this was Harpers personal medical information and as his guardian he was the one who decided on who had access. Not that he couldn't stop access if it had been denied, but the legal route was definitely the easier one. "The fully scan is more than an X-Ray, but a scan in my lab or Dad's would be safer than radiation exposure in a hospital x-ray machine." Not that 1 x-ray would be a cause for concern, but still.
"I thought you were getting a bunch of her stuff. Like Davis's favorite wrench," Harper insisted, his heart working up a bit. The tips of his shoes flickered, right up to the white tip of his converse flickering and blending away.
He didn't know what was in his mother's notes. When he was younger, he didn't care, the only thing he cared about was when it hurt. Now he was older, those notes just made him queasy; he never looked at them. By now he had no clue what was in his file, his mother's many notebooks on creating a better iron-suited man, sans the suit.
"So it is a trick. You want even more info or I get radiation?" Harper crossed his arms.
"Aren’t you just hilarious?" he muttered, a hint of sarcasm lacing his words as he held back from showing just how much the kid was actually getting on his nerves. He really didn’t have much patience for smart-mouths.
John sighed and dropped his head for a moment. Bob should be the one dealing with this, but he was nowhere to be found so John was stuck in this situation. He looked up once again. "And how do you even know that, kid?"
"Davis thinks I'm funny," Harper said. It was only then the robot stepped onto the room, seven feet high of bolts and wires forged into a rather rough man-like shape. "But, like, I did program him, so that probably doesn't count."
Davis waved a gentle hello.
Harper tilted his head. "I'm kind of smart, that's how. I get it from my parents."
Blinking out of what she could See, Lilia looked down at his hands, frowning a little in confusion as she gently turned his hands over, and saw the lines of scars there. Lilia's fingertips were warm, her touch gentle, as she traced the marks.
She hadn't made a mistake; what she'd Seen had been completely accurate. Lilia cleared her throat a little, forcing herself to smile in an effort at reassurance.
"I guess I must have," she pretended, before her eyes were drawn to the trick they performed. Invisibility. She knew the mother was planning other things. "You're in competition. She's putting you in competition."
"We're born in competition," Harper complained. It wasn't his fault his mom had been feuding internally with his father since they both skipped second grade, and it wasn't his fault that Tony Stark fueled the fire by never acknowledging it. He glared at his hands, forcing the chips to waver and bring his skin back.
He didn't want to say it, but it did sort of feel like his mom might be right. Like, Mrs. Calderu was zero for two. He wanted to believe in spark and shine, with the gods like Thor roaming around and blasting lightning, but maybe mom really had it all down. He was supposed to be too old for this.
“Well, I guess he can get sick like a person then. But he's got a wonderful and talented robo doctor to make him better.” Lisa told him with a smile, though he couldn't exactly see if with how focused her was on what he was doing with Davis' circuit board.
"Yeah. It's a computer bug," Harper said, in case it needed clarifying. His mom had needed something, she wouldn't say what, and had plugged Davis in, and it went downhill from there. "I'll fix it. It's my job, as his friend."
An audible sigh slipped from John’s lips as he reluctantly turned to the kid who’d been eavesdropping on the conversation. John liked kids—for the most part. But smart-ass ones like this one? Well, it took him a bit longer to get used to them.
“You shouldn’t be sticking your nose in this, kid.” he said, trying to keep his voice neutral. “We don’t need your opinion on this.” Maybe it came out a little too harsh, but John was already tired and starting to run out of patience. Having a kid correct him was only making things worse.
"My nose isn't anywhere, it's over here," Harper rolled his eyes, mostly because that was stupid.
"And it's not an opinion. It's a mechanical fact," He pointed out. "And if you go sticking your nose in that particular pipe, you'll feel that combustion engine failing, which'll still be very, very hot."
“Living in someone's shadow and trying to live up to their legacy aren't the same thing.” Lisa told him, an eyebrow quirking as she said it. “One is other people comparing you and the things you do, one is you doing it. You should save people because you want to, because you think it's right. Not because it's expected of you or you feel like you have to live up to someone else.”
"Mom's doesn't want me in his shadow," Harper shrugged. It didn't seem like a big deal to him, especially since it was his whole life. It was practically every day nonsense, not worth thinking about. "She wants me to be bigger and better, that's why we had to start early."
There's no envy to him. Alex liked his new lease on life now, a fresh start from the strife he'd seen. "An unending cycle." An astute conclusion, one that didn't need any confirmation. "You ever try doing something else on your own?" Maybe he was lucky that he was free to do what he wanted, as long as he stayed out of trouble.
"Once I have some doctorate degrees, I think it'll end. No one's in school for forever," Harper rolled his eyes. Well, maybe a librarian thought they were in school for forever, but that's why he wasn't a librarian. He grimaced. "No? Maybe when I'm older."
"I mean, do you get the chance to do kid stuff? Do you go to the park? Do you have friends your age?" She asked. Maybe she wasn't being totally respectful of Maxine's right as his mother to dictate who spoke to her child but Wanda couldn't just let the situation lie. "Tony was very smart too and I think he'd think Davis is really cool." She assured him.
"Dressing up as him for Halloween isn't the same as being him." She told him simply. "Being Iron Man would be a lot of responsibility." She warned.
"I'm not like other kids," Harper said. It was constantly pointed out to him. He was a super-genius, just trailing behind either of his parents. He was too smart to risk it playing football. He had more to accomplish to laze about at summer camp. "And I told you anyways, I do have friends. That's what Davis is for."
Davis waved once more.
"No, but lots of kids still want to be him," Harper frowned. It would be a lot of responsibility, but mom had made plans. By then, he'd be ready, he'd be trained. "I'm half him, so I'm half-ready already, right."
