What if the solution to one of the world’s biggest pollution problems wasn’t just technology… but teamwork with nature? In Sweden, an innovative startup has created a smart device that rewards crows with food in exchange for collecting cigarette butts. These incredibly intelligent birds have quickly learned how it works—turning urban waste into an opportunity for cleaner streets. Every year, billions of cigarette butts end up polluting our environment, harming wildlife and ecosystems. But this simple yet brilliant idea shows that with creativity, sustainability, and a little help from nature, we can rethink how we tackle global problems. Sometimes, the smartest solutions come from thinking outside the human box.

Glacial Blues
Meltwater braids like a river delta in this gorgeous image from photographer Stuart Chape. It earned the Silver distinction from the World Nature Photography Awards in their “Planet Earth’s landscapes and environments” category. (Image credit: S. Chape/WNPA; via Colossal)
Thunderstorms Make Trees Glow
Scientists have long hypothesized that the high electrical charge of thunderstorms could produce an opposite charge in the ground that would discharge from the forest canopy. But this phenomenon, known as a corona, had never been observed on actual trees. (Image credit: W. Brune; research credit: P. McFarland et al.; via SciAm)

When I grow up… 🤔💭
From animal care and education to marketing and technology, the Monterey Bay Aquarium offers many different career paths.
With over 500 employees, these kiddos represent just a small slice of the caring and committed people who make it all happen in the name of ocean conservation.
No matter our role, the ocean connects us.
Still a homebody, just with the right friends ✨.

Sprites and ELVES
Although we are most familiar with the white, branching lightning caused by electrical discharge between clouds and the ground, there are many types of lightning. This fortuitous image captures two: tentacled red sprites and ring-like ELVES. (Image credit: V. Binotto; via APOD)

Phases of last night’s sunset. It was a good one
Friends, Micayla Pretti, the younger sister of Alex Pretti, released a statement on Monday evening. I encourage you to read it in full: “Alex was kind, generous, and had a way of lighting up every room he walked into. He was incredibly intelligent and deeply passionate, and he made people feel safe. But most importantly, he was my brother. I had the privilege of being his little sister for 32 years. I will never be able to hug him, laugh with him, or cry to him again because of those thugs — and that is a pain no words can fully capture. Alex always wanted to make a difference in this world, and it’s devastating that he won’t be here to witness the impact he was making. Through his work at the VA caring for the sickest patients, and passion to advance cancer research, he touched more lives than he probably ever realized. All Alex ever wanted was to help someone — anyone. Even in his very last moments on this earth, he was simply trying to do just that. I want to thank everyone who has reached out to my family and me, whether you knew Alex personally or not. The messages, posts, and overwhelming positivity shared about him truly reflect his character, work ethic, and passions. My brother is, and always will be, my hero. When does this end? How many more innocent lives must be lost before we say enough? Hearing disgusting lies spread about my brother is absolutely gut-wrenching, and my family is deeply grateful so many people have stood up and helped tell his truth. He would be very proud.” May Alex Pretti rest in peace, and may his family receive justice. My heart is with the entire Minneapolis community and other communities brutalized by this regime.
May he rest in peace. And may his killers be brought to justice.
In the words of the late John Lewis, it's time for "good trouble." If you're a Minnesotan, I urge you to join tomorrow's Ice Out For Good economic blockout and exercise your collective power. And if you're not, organize in solidarity and demand our leaders stand up to ICE. Head to ICEOUTFORGOOD.ORG for more details on how you can get involved.

Marangoni Effect in Biology
For decades, biologists have focused on genetics as the key determiner for biological processes, but genetic signals alone do not explain every process. Instead, researchers are beginning to see an interplay between genetics and mechanics as key to what goes on in living bodies. (Image credit: S. Tlili/CNRS; research credit: S.
