john doesn’t like me telling this story.

it was a few weeks after my eleventh birthday. i got a new gun that year, the first that was really all mine. it was just a little pea shooter really, but if you aimed it at someone’s eye it could do a whole lot of damage.

the safety was kind of tricky for a little kid. but dad liked to “be careful” and make sure i always put it back on before we put it away. his making sure sometimes looked a lot like just walking past and tossing the briefest glance as he was on his way out.

and when you are eleven, so much shit can freak you out. i couldn’t even tell you what it was, aside from a loud noise. but of course i go to grab the gun, shaking with fear, eleven.

i’m thinking i am maybe going to have to take a life, or maybe it’s about to be my time. when i reach and scramble for it and handle it all wrong, and the safety is off, it puts a bullet through my foot.

yeah that motel owner did not let us stick around to deal with that once my dad had stormed back in to collect us. luckily that guy was running shady shit on the side, so he didn’t get the law involved.

we had to drive to the next town with an emergency room. and the disapproval on my father’s face, while i was in some of the worst pain i had experienced to that point, while i was comforting sammy, who was confused and crying in the car beside me. i can still see that disapproval when i close my eyes and it hurts more than any bullet.
