2014 so far: online mixes
We're already halfway through this year so it's about time I did a review of 2014 so far. Firstly, here are, in no particular order, my favorite mixes (see here for january):
Electronic Explorations - 318 - Function / Inland
It's one of the best pieces of news this year: two years after announcing it, Dave Sumner finally relaunched his label, Infrastructure. For the first release, he teamed up with Inland (Ed Davenport) for the excellent Odeon/Rhyl EP, the first track of which is a cover of Photek's magnificent Under The Palms, the closing track of his fundamental album Solaris. A bunch of mouth-watering reeditions are coming next.
In this mix Ed and Dave showcase the sounds that inspired Odeon/Rhyl: techno and pure electro ; cold, contemplative atmospheres. Like E.R.P. with a little less jack in it, or Plant43, or Area Forty_One's latest EP on Delsin. Right up my alley.
Eric Cloutier - IS Special 003
When Eric's at his best, he's unstoppable. Input Selector have published a wonderful 4h42 journey through ambient, deep techno, dub techno and even techno-pop ballads like this one. This one's a keeper, one to accompany you for special moments of your life...
Material Object - Live @ Labyrinth 2013 - Pete Namlook Tribute
... and this is another one of that kind. One for a long bus or train ride, one for a lazy-drowsy afternoon. I am not kidding: this is powerful psychotropic stuff right here. Something that'll put you in a kind of half-conscious state that you'll wake up content and satisfied from. Once you embrace this set, you'll most certainly state with poise that Pete Namlook is the greatest electronic music producer of all time. Only that's just a fraction of what he's produced and released on his FAX +49-69/450464 label...
The Bunker Podcast 83: Mike Servito
This is pure fire. Simply a great mix of dance music, old and new, the kind of mix that makes you want to get up and dance, except you're at the office with your headphones on and you end up bobbing your head and looking like a weirdo in the eyes your co-workers.
Clubberia Podcast 205: XDB
A mixes that oozes class from beginning to end. XDB is a sensitive man and you can feel it through this mix. Every track is equal parts emotion and danceability. Put it simply: the definition of deepness in house and techno.
ClashMusic DJ Mix Podcast - DjRUM
Not particularly special, but very interesting mix. So many different styles and sounds, yet really cohesive and easy-listening.
Chef Show on Rinse France, Feb 13th of 2014
The first hour of this radio show is another great demonstration of genre-blending. Mathieu1000000 challenged himself to make a mix of all the different styles he likes, all the while keeping the bpm at precisely 100, and he pulled it off brilliantly.
Floating Points Summer 2014 in Brazil Mix
I don't know much about brazilian music, and it's a bit of a cliché to say this, but when the sun's out, music like this sound fabulous. Calm, warm, feel-good songs. Also check out Fusils à pompe's Brazil compilation, which is pretty much in the same vein.put it simply
There are many more but I'll keep it short. Check out my Soundcloud likes for more.put it simply
