Speaking about alternative ways of growing things, have you seen the bottle tower gardens invented by Willem Van Cotthem? His youtube videos are a bit amateurish but the plant results look amazing. I prefer straight up recycling plastic bottles but that IS a neat upcycling idea and it's a water-efficient and space-efficent way of gardening 8D
Oh nice, I hadn’t seen these before, but they look ingenious!
A great way to repurpose waste plastic too, especially as not everywhere has plastic recycling facilities. The water efficient part is appealing too. Solutions like this would be helpful for people living in more arid climates!
Here’s a quick DIY guide for anyone who’s interested.
Oh! This would keep those isopods from destroying my milkweed babies! I only had two survivors out of 20, and they’re still struggling. :( Might be tricky for me to find a spot for them, we get storms pretty frequently (including occasional tornadoes, FUN) and I can just imagine losing everything.
One of my friends has a greenhouse, and uses this set-up for seedlings:
Hard to see, but it’s PVC piping with holes cut out to fit little plastic cups with seedlings. The pipes are angled very slightly in alternating directions, with pipes connecting the low-to-high end between rows. Water goes in the top, and through each pipe, waters all the seeds, and comes out the bottom and empties into a tub. The tub has a hose that will pump water out and into a hydroponics tank with goldfish (large ones) that add nitrogen to the water. And then the water gets pumped through to a couple other places, before it gets pumped back into the top of the seedlings pipes.
People are so creative, I love it.
