Moss caught a bird today.

Sometimes I think she’s just a cat dog.

The bird was fine, just a little shaken. I’d be too if Moss grabbed me like that..

there’s a banging at her door.

“Nozomi-? It’s me, kojika- can you..?”

Nozomi stiffens.

Her house is surrounded.. Kojika’s probably corrupted.

But. Maybe she can help soothe things..

She runs down, Moss whining at her heels.

“Be a good girl, don’t bite. Okay?”

She opens the door. Kojika is there, her legs pixely and glitching.

“Oh thank god.”

“Nono- it’s okay, come in! Can I get you anything? Tea, maybe..?”

Nozomi ushers her friend in, letting her sit on the couch as she starts a kettle.

“My aunt and uncle are out for the weekend, so.. we should be fine. What happened?”

She eyes the black squares on her friend’s legs. They seem to glitch and waver, and Koji’s voice kind of sounds like Vanelope Von Schweetz’s cranked up to ten.

Moss whimpers and hides between Nozomi, tail tucked.

“hey, baby.. it’s okay, it’s just koji.”

she murmurs to her dog, before addressing Kojika.

“She’s nice- won’t hurt anybody, really, haha.. she may look scary, but she’s my big softie!”

she should be. bite me, moss. get nozomi out of here.. get me out of here, get me away-

Kojika stands, moving over to the table while the water boils.

“Yknow. Th3y d0nt huRt th@t b@adly. N0t a$ mUc h a$ pUncH3s, anYwAy.”

Her voice glitches and cuts, as if bitcrushed.

“It’$ n0t s0 b@d.”

it is it hurts it hurts I don’t even know how I can stand. please. please.

Nozomi hesitates.

“Uhm. Yeah.. I dunno. They’re.. new, that’s for sure.”

Moss growls softly. It’s the first time Nozomi hears her do that outside of play.

She stands as the tea kettle whistles. “Do you want chamomile? I also have some blueberry, or peppermint..”

They’re around my house but not in it. I’m up in the attic with Moss, she’s freaking out and has been like.. all day. It’s weird..

I’m safe, is the point.

She picks up her phone, habitually only using one hand to text the first person coming to mind- pausing when she sees the message history.

“Goodnight, moon! I’ll see you in the morning!”

“love you, Aki”

She scrolls up, for a moment. Message upon message, call after call. Seems like she was never.. gone..

Goodmorning and goodnight texts. Rants, from both of them- Nozomi never liked her family much, after all. Silly cat gifs, bird videos, snow leopard compilations, bat clips. ‘thank you for comings’ and ‘I love you always’ messages were before her eyes, spanning much longer than she anticipated.

Odd.

Hadn’t she been gone for more than half a year now?

How was she responding? How was everything so.. normal?

She scrolls back down, typing rapidly before deleting her messages. And typing again. And deleting.

She settles on an option. She’s going to pretend things are fine for now. That this isn’t confusing, that this is normal.

No response. She checks the date- and realizes it’s a school day. Her alarm was missed, then.. maybe she was just tired.

her phone buzzed. It buzzed again, and again, and again.

She was in the middle of her English lesson. Aki wasn’t there- but she did seem to be a little tired yesterday, so Nozomi just figured she was probably taking a self care day.

She’d check her phone later, between classes. Her teachers were strict, after all. It was better to have her phone throughout the day than to risk it. More than likely, it was just Aki’s usual morning spam- wishing her a good day, sending her silly animal photos, and hoping she ate something (she hasn’t, but that’s what lunch was for anyway.)

Sorry, Aki. Just half an hour more, and then I can talk during lunch..

“Miss Achi.”

“Ah! Sorry, teacher. What was the question?”

Her teacher sighs.

“How would you correct this sentence? Use English, not your Japanese..”

“Ah, well.. I’d use t-two, instead of b-both..”

It was.. super weird. I’d forgotten everything, and I was in a lot of pain- you were there, and you had all these photos and trinkets of ours.. you were trying to jog my memory, but it made everything worse and I pushed you away..

I ran. I ran away from you because it hurt so much..
