She wakes up with a small scream, heart pounding. She reaches for the pastel yellow bear Nozomi had gotten her for their second anniversary, squeezing it to her chest.
She’s home.
She’s safe.
She almost cried with relief at the realization. It was all a dream. Checking her phone, it seemed like she missed a day- odd. Or maybe she was just really out of it. Probably the latter. Aki shrugs, and scrolls back on the message logs between her and Nozomi.
Definitely out of it.
God, did she even take her meds? Probably not, considering how foggy her brain is right now. Or maybe it’s the fact it’s 3 in the morning. Either way, she feels sluggish.
Squeezing the bear and snuggling under her blankets to avoid the breeze from her window, she tries to go back to sleep. She’s cozy, safe and warm. The day before was all just some odd dream, probably induced by some fear or another.
Everything is gonna be okay.
The thought is warm and comforting as she drifts off for the rest of the night.
She had been in her room all day. Something she was used to, but people kept checking on her. Ema, her mom, even her dad gave her a call.. which was weird.
Shouldn’t they have moved on by now? Why weren’t they surprised that she was here? Shouldn’t there be so many more.. questions?
Then her phone rang- a tune she wasn’t familiar with, but it felt comforting. It wasn’t her ringtone, but it was the pastel yellow phone that had been by her bed when she woke up. She somehow had the same password as this person, and.. everything felt like it was hers, even if it wasn’t.
She picks up. It was nozomi.
“Hey! I’m done with after school classes. Do you wanna meet at mine, or in SEKAI?”
The girl freezes. Her voice- it’s like nothing ever happened. But it did, it had to have happened- she knows what she did-
“Aki?”
“Ah- yeah! Sorry, spaced for a bit. I’ll meet you at yours, nozo! Are we gonna walk Moss, too?”
“Yknow what? Yeah. It’s nice out today. Meet me at the front, and we can go to the woods. Sound okay..?”
Nozomi’s voice was hesitant- as if she had a question on her mind. The girl tried to brush it off, and keep her cheer in her voice as she replied.
“Yeah! Sounds great. I’ll bring some snacks and see you there~!”
She hangs up before nozomi can reply, sighing. This all makes her uneasy, and yet.. so comforting, so familiar, it feels wrong to take it.
Everything feels wrong, today.
She picks up her phone, habitually only using one hand to text the first person coming to mind- pausing when she sees the message history.
“Goodnight, moon! I’ll see you in the morning!”
“love you, Aki”
She scrolls up, for a moment. Message upon message, call after call. Seems like she was never.. gone..
Goodmorning and goodnight texts. Rants, from both of them- Nozomi never liked her family much, after all. Silly cat gifs, bird videos, snow leopard compilations, bat clips. ‘thank you for comings’ and ‘I love you always’ messages were before her eyes, spanning much longer than she anticipated.
Odd.
Hadn’t she been gone for more than half a year now?
How was she responding? How was everything so.. normal?
She scrolls back down, typing rapidly before deleting her messages. And typing again. And deleting.
She settles on an option. She’s going to pretend things are fine for now. That this isn’t confusing, that this is normal.
