Hailey’s abuse / control / safety arc
“When someone shows you who they are…believe them.”
One of the reasons I love the writing on PD is how deliberate it is over time. There are a few arcs that I think will come full circle this season. Many of them are centered around Hailey’s sense of safety and control.
I think that for the second time in her life, Hailey is going to realize that she has been abused by an authority figure, repeatedly. She is going to also realize that in the current situation, she allowed it to happen with Voight because she was worried about jeopardizing her sense of safety (her job). “Implying that I’m afraid of change, and I want to stay here where it’s safe.”
In 8x04 when she says “I don’t really talk to him anymore…but my mom say’s he’s doing better..not drinking, exercising “changed”…whatever.” It is obvious that she said that with a huge eyeroll and did not believe it. She had obviously separated herself from her abuser and doubted he could change, even standing her ground to not forgive him and see him before his surgery (absolutely her right).
I think in this arc she will realize Voight is no better and she will do what she has to do to separate herself from his abuse. If she does not, she is just repeating the pattern she saw growing up in a home where her mother stood next to someone abusing her, presumably even after her kids were grown and out of the house.
I think that over the next few episodes we’ll see Hailey separating herself from Voight because “she’s got a gun and a badge, and she’s bigger now.” While this will rock her sense of safety to change the “stability and normalcy” she has found within the unit, I think the back half of the season will show us how she is rebuilding that with Jay. (I have thoughts on Jay’s arc, but that’s another whole post!)
