THIS ENTIRE MOMENT FELT like one of her vivid dreams, like the ones she used to have as a kids — dreams that both amazed her and terrified her at the same time but the feeling of dread was overwhelming, like if she moved something terrible would happen, but she couldn’t stay glued to one spot for the rest of her life. if this wasn’t stark industries anymore then she had to find a way back, to her family, her life they were what she wanted. the rest of the world? not so much, if there was one thing morgan had been sure to do over the years it was shut unnecessary people out. she already had a long list of people she was terrified to lose, she didn’t need to add more. not after losing one of the two she never thought she’d have to say goodbye, not so soon anyway. but she felt a sudden longing for home, for the buzz of the city, the escapes to their hidden cottage, just her and mom.
they felt so far away and she wasn’t quite sure what to make of it, but the wheels in her head were turning, or they were up until she heard the sound of footsteps, and then came the…
glowing fists?
that’s what she was looking at right? she blinked a few times before she huffed. “ oh hell no.. “ she mumbled, as she pressed herself further into the wall. “ this is so not what i signed up for. “ the words were for herself, doe eyes wide but she refused to look away, despite how scared she currently felt. instead she looked on as the stranger approached and she tilted her chin in haughty indignation as her finger guns were pointed out. that had been uncool. “ don’t you know never to question a LADY when she’s armed? “ she huffed, her signature sarcasm and irritation coming to light, as doe eyes looked on suspiciously. and she would have continued had the blonde not echoed her mother’s name.
“ my mom. “
she explained to the other, as she finally managed to pull herself off the wall. “ and so i don’t have a weapon but i’m able to kick with deadly accuracy… your shins won’t like that. “ was she attempting to sound like a threat? possibly, not that she could given what she had just seen the other do. still her chest fell, not because she relaxed but because the woman seemed uninterested in actually hurting her at least for now and then came a question, one that took her a moment to answer, but decided she should.
“ morgan, morgan stark. “
her body went stiff. “ that’s not funny. ” she deadpanned. the name STARK had become a trigger for her, ever since she nearly killed him. her guilt followed her like a cloud overhead, never weakening but growing stronger every day, tightening around her body until she s u f f o c a t e d. as her guilt was eating her from the inside out. the touch of rogue’s fingertips again was a mercy beside how empty she felt now. maybe she should’ve done that. maybe she should’ve found the woman, after the war, and asked her to take her powers and memories away. keep the ones of tony stark, so she would finally be released of the guilt. a mercy, asked the captain herself, from the mutant she feared the most. but instead, she sought the company of alcohol.
the longer carol looked at morgan, and gauged her behavior, the more she noticed. her features looked just like tony’s, and her sarcasm and unpredictable behavior reminded her of one person. though, tony stark was one of a kind. but even tony, carol thought, probably didn’t feel like he could live up to the stark name. not all the time, not that it mattered to her, just look at carol. she wasn’t exactly the golden child herself - but back to the girl. could morgan have been related to tony? she remembered her reply when she said pepper, out loud. my mom. so her mom’s name was pepper? this was too much of a coincidence. mom’s named pepper. looks like tony. the cogs started turning in her head, while her expression slowly begin to shift, as she realized. no. she couldn’t be! she thought. there was no way, tony wouldn’t do that to pepper. she couldn’t be his -
“ wait - tony stark’s daughter? ”
she frowned deeply. she had to be tony’s daughter. and if she was that made things TEN times worse.
carol took a step back, while her confusion softened. before she’d heard her given answer, a new kind of guilt settled in. she didn’t know tony had a kid. should she have known? they were friends, but how close? would he have told her he had a kid? he was the kind of person that would want to protect that - maybe even kept it a secret to protect the kid. when had he decided to settle down? the tony she knew was a playboy, preferred the company of one night stands, than a relationship. he was too much of a mess for that. she didn’t want to chop it up to a mistake, but maybe she was that? either way, was she responsible for making morgan, fatherless? and pepper, a single mother?
underneath this new guilt, a part of carol was furious. furious tony hadn’t told her he had a kid. he was really going to make her suffer. damn you, tony she thought. keeping the experiments on himself, to himself. now, the kid. carol’s not in the business of killing kid’s parents. she never saw pepper after the war, maybe because of morgan, it would’ve been too painful.
“ i - didn’t know he had a daughter. ” she sounded apologetic.
“ i don’t think we’ve met - i’m carol danvers. captain marvel. ”
