The main theme of the short story āThe Kind of Light That Shines on Texasā by Reginald McKnight, is that not everything is what it appears to be. This is shown through character development throughout the story. Through characters such as Clint and Marvin, these characters are perceived differently from who they are. In the case of Clint, he is seen as a rich city boy even though heās Black, when in actuality he speaks formally and dresses well because his father serves as a sergeant in the military. However, with Marvin, he is seen as someone who doesnāt pay attention and goes about his day doing as he pleases. This thought is changed when he fights off Oakley for Clint. Both characters although different are both not who they appear to be, this relates to the picture in the fact that illusions are not what they seem and can often trick those who aren't open minded.
