Instead of Pete being the only causality, in some nightmare of a real-life miracle. He was the only one that survived that night.
An average, run of the mill frat party to kick off the school year. A little hazing here and there, rituals needed to be upheld. Music loud enough to cause permanent ear damage. Drunk idiots stumbling around.
It all went horribly wrong. So quickly.
The sounds of screams, made up of so many people. The sounds of people dying. People who Pete could do nothing at all to help. It was permanently etched into his mind. The smoke and flames, engulfing the barn quicker than anything he could imagine. Even now, he could breath in fresh air and be left with nothing but the scent of ash.
He tried. Tried in a moment of desperation to break down the barn door. But nothing he did helped. It was stuck, and he had nothing but his hands. The skin quickly started to burn and peel. Blisters forming from the sheer heat of just being a few seconds too close. The wood was burning too quickly. He was only one person. And all he could do was watch. Standing helplessly. Being useless.
Pete couldn't go back to his old life. To Captial College, to Alpha Alpha Alpha. Not anywhere. Not after that. Not after the blood of several people would be blamed on his hands. He was the only survivor, who wouldn't think it was him? Any sane person would.
With no where else to go, he booked a ticket to Paradise City. Trying to run away from guilt of something that was never really his fault in the first place. And if he died there, with no one else to remember him by? Well, maybe he deserved that.
