i see posts here about how people are so mortified when they are acknowledged as being a regular customer somewhere that they never return. cowards. the employees at taco bell treat me like a celebrity. like royalty. i am their strange little pet customer who gets traded along as staff comes and goes. they know my car before i even speak in the drive-thru speaker. today i was 2 hours late and she ran over and squealed that she "thought i'd left them!" and that she "made my order with extra love!" and you what, she did
it's funny that this is getting notes again, because last night i went to the thai place in my neighborhood. it's run by a family and during covid times i ate there literally almost every day. later i cut back on eating out so much and hadn't been there in two years but last night we went and ate inside for the first time ever and the owner ran over to say hello and ask how i was, and repeated our old regular order. it was sweet. it's so easy to feel like you are an island, but stuff like this reminds you that you are part of a community.
One time i went to the bakery near my home and just as i entered the put out a fresh tray of spinach cheese ham crossiants, and when i ordered one they just told me its on the house
There's a Polish corner store in a city I visit maybe once a month, I've been there maybe 3-4 times, and the clerk (owner?) recognises me every time and we always chat quite a bit
Natasja was one of the best Danish lyricists of all time and she was taken from us too soon. "Gi' Mig Danmark Tilbage" remains one of the best political songs ever sung in this language. She managed to hit on every issue that was relevant to her, and none of it felt disingenuous. Her understanding of rhyme and assonance and the Danish literary/poetic canon, and her ability to incorporate it into her songs in a way that seemed so effortless was a rare gift that few artists have today

I love shopping online, because I'll be looking for something super specific you can only get in Copenhagen (across the country) so we have to figure out shipping, or it's practically in my backyard and I can pick it up in no time

First time they've ever been outside🥺❤ I still have to keep them separate, because the vet won't neuter Nimbus until he's 6 months old. And I figured Nova was least likely to bolt from her hiding spot, hence Nimbus is in the cage

so back when my little brother was in high school, my mom went as a chaperone for their senior year field trip to an amusement park. which, you know, brave move to volunteer to supervise a bunch of high school seniors let loose in a wonderland of rollercoasters and sugar
my brother and his friends in this field trip group were truly great kids. but they were not above run of the mill teenage boy shenanigans. it’s the end of senior year, you and all your buddies are at the amusement park, you’re naturally going to want to act like a complete moron
there was one kid in the group who was especially prone to goofing around. committed to the bit, some may say. my mom knew that if nonsense was going to break out, he’d likely be at the center of it
so she goes up to this kid at the very start of the trip and says “hey, i’m kinda worried about this chaperoning thing. this might be a lot to ask, but can you help me keep an eye on everyone? you wouldn’t have to do anything big, just be an extra set of eyes for me.”
friends, this kid proceeded to run their field trip group like the fucking us marines. everyone is at the meet up spots at the designated time. everyone waits in line for the rides like a bunch of boy scouts. the second the horseplay gets too out of hand, this kid is getting it back under control
it’s incredible how differently people act based on the expectations you set. instead of going to this kid and saying “hey, i know you’re trouble, so i’ve got my eye on you,” my mom went “hey, i know you have influence in your peer group, so i think you can help me.”
treat someone like a problem, they’ll act like a problem. but give people a chance to help, make them feel important, and they usually rise far above the occasion. it was a stroke of genius that i’m honestly still in awe of
