@rrumblr thoughts on Rrom that make their living fortune telling if they don’t have to? Is it exploiting stereotypes?
Sure, it’s a stereotype, but it’s also a traditional profession that we fought long and hard to keep. I think it’s great that Roma / Romany continue to do this type of work, as long as we don’t exploit other people in the process. However, the commodification of fortune telling has a lot do with how people currently view it. Fortune telling is often categorized as a scam, which is incredibly frustrating, especially because most fortune tellers and (fortune teller) scam artists are not ethnic Roma / Romany. The fact that fortune telling itself is a “Gypsy” stereotype is less irritating to me than the fact that fortune telling is stereotyped as a scam because few Roma and numerous non-Roma abuse people’s good nature or beliefs. We used to be revered and respected for this profession until the Catholic Church fought a war against it. That is really important for all Roma & Romany to remember. I’d love to see fortune telling seen as a legitimate profession. I’d also love to see the profession placed back in the hands of the ethnic groups who traditionally practice it. Those are just my opinions and I certainly don’t speak for all Roma, but I think we need to take a step back and look at how racism and religion have shaped what used to be a very legitimate profession.
I can see both sides, I think there’s a fine line between being yourself, who just happens to be stereotypical, and actively abusing stereotypes to make yourself somehow more “real”
I think this is really valuable, especially looking back at my family's history. A lot of my family's culture and practices have been lost due to the enculturation, specifically marriage into a Catholic family. I definitely agree that there needs to be a line drawn between exploitation and celebration/participation. The other problem that we need to work against is the idea that fortune telling is the only part of Rromani culture
My little sister was in tears today because she was wearing her hair naturally to school. She told me that she didn’t want to because people at her school always made fun of her or laughed at her when she did (including her friends and teacher). She said that she hates her hair and that she wishes it wasnt like how it is. I tried telling her that people would kill to have hair like hers. She didn’t believe me and said that no one wants hair like hers and that she hates it. We live in a predominately white neighborhood, so shes used to seeing white girls with flowing hair. She feels as thought their hair is prettier than hers. I know this is a bit stupid and all but, could you guys reblog this and share some positivity so that I can show her that she is loved and that her hair is beautiful and she should never be ashamed?
Like or re blog if you're Romani or Sinti or some other tribe so I can follow you.
I consider you all like family and I just want a stronger community.

The idea of this “baddie” fashion trend in which popular white girls on instagram and tumblr wear what black girls in the hood have and were literally wearing since 1995 and getting paraded for it irks my fucking soul. Being bowed down to for being “thick” and wearing skintight leggings (that only seem to be in khaki or olive green?) with Adidas or Nikes and our bomber jackets that the little hood fashion boutique store on the corner loved to sell and overlined lips and overfilled faux thick browns and the big hoop earrings and our cornrows (boxer braids??) jesus christ? Black girls and Latinx girls too have been getting called ghetto for all of this for YEARS and somehow it managed to turn into 2015-2016′s top fashion trend without us getting an ounce of credit for it
today is the 3 year anniversary of ‘what to heck’. god bless
