Fucking trapped

I absolutely abhor my day job. It is seriously the shittiest environment and I DO NOT belong in it. I graduate this week cum laude from the honors college with a bachelors in chemistry, having won student of the year for organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and general chemistry as well as winning the ACS division of organic chemistry award... So, naturally, I have been looking for jobs this summer. Looks like I have a tutor position laid out which pays nice and I am excited about, but because the hours are sporadic, I can't quit my day job. The lab I was working in is low on money so I can't get paid there and nobody wants to pick up a chemistry graduate for only a summer it seems (I will be in graduate school in August). I am so frustrated. I am farrrrrr too overqualified to be working as a cashier at a grocery store. Looks like I am trapped for one more summer though :(

Sitting in class

Unfortunately, due to various levels of distraction from all parts of my life, including academia, my biomedical physics class is terribly uninteresting. However, I am here and should hopefully be able to absorb some information by a term my friends and I like to use called "diffusive" or "osmotic" learning. Regardless, my true focus lies on my thesis. I am writing my thesis to graduate this semester and it is going well, I just don't have a lot of time to finish it. I have to present it tomorrow, as well as write a non thesis paper, on my thesis, before the presentation...I think it is silly, but oh well. Good news is, today one of my hypotheses for my research class (separate from thesis) proved to be true and lends credit to my hypothesis for the catalytic nature of my reaction. I should have the data for this by tonight, which is good because I have a poster to present on Saturday haha. Honestly, I just want to hang out with Janine tonight. I am tired of writing, presentations, exams, etc. I am ready for a break and she always calms me down quite nicely. Notably, tomorrow is our 6 months and I really excited to see her. I just hope I can finish my work so I don't have to stress :/.

Okay, so this just happened:

AgCl —uv—> (Ag+)   +  (Cl-) Lecturer: Yes and the silver particles go to the pub to hang out with the other silver particle husbands, to form nano-particles of silver which gives the glasses that tint when in the sun. After you re-enter the shady areas, there is less UV so the silver particles go home to their chloride-wives, hence the loss of tint from the transition glasses. Using a husband going to the pub as an analogy for the temporary separation of AgCl. O_o

The video above shows vortex rings of smoke ejected from the burning tire of a moving truck. Without seeing the damaged tire, it’s tough to pinpoint the cause with certainty, but here are a couple of ideas. Typically vortex rings are formed with a burst of air through a narrow orifice; this is, for example, how humans, dolphins, vortex cannons, and volcanoes all make smoke rings. If air is escaping the tire through small holes, this could cause rings. Unlike in those situations, though, the tire is spinning, which means its motion is already imparting vorticity to the flow, so that any air escaping the tire forms a vortex ring. Personal care is big business: Americans spend close to $30 billion annually on shampoos, hair conditioners, skin care and other products to make us look, feel, and smell better. Of this total 40% goes for shampoos, conditioners, and styling gels.

The ingredients in shampoo can appear like hieroglyphics, even to a chemist. Here are some examples: sodium lauryl sulfate, glycol distearate, panthenol, methyl paraben and dimethicone (picture 2). It’s enough to make your scalp itch, but despite their exotic-sounding names, the active ingredients in a shampoo play three fundamental roles. Some ingredients wash away the substances that make hair “dirty”; others adhere to hair to impart a desirable feel and texture, and still others are emulsifiers that keep the mixture from separating into its components.

To accomplish these roles, the components of a hair product must have the right combinations of properties. Some need to have strong attractions to water (hydrophilic), while others must have weak attractions to water (hydrophobic).

Water can wash away hydrophilic substances but cannot remove hydrophilic dirt and grease. Shampoo contains molecules that are simultaneously hydrophilic and hydrophobic, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (picture 3). This molecule contains a hydrophilic sulfate group attached to a hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain. The chain is attracted to grease and dirt, whereas the anionic portion is attracted to water. Molecules like these associate with hydrophobic dirt particles to form hydrophilic clumps that water can wash away.

Another interesting hair products fact is that perms merely reduce the disulfide bonds in the structural proteins in hair, then re-oxidize them back, but to different thiols to make new disulfide bonds, which gives the structural proteins a new structure and thus, your hair a new structure. Eg. Curly.

I 100% disagree. This is only true for ppl who take those compliments and use them to inflate their ego. Rather, one should strive to understand what is difficult for them and use those compliments as self confidence that with appropriate time and work, they have the ability to learn that which they do not understand.

Proton Delivery, Removal Can Speed, Distract Common Catalyst Proton delivery and removal determines if a well-studied catalyst takes its highly productive form or twists into a less useful structure, according to scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The catalyst takes two protons and forms molecular hydrogen, or it can split the hydrogen. The team showed that the most productive isomer, endo/endo, has the key nitrogen-hydrogen bonds pushed close to the nickel center. If the catalyst is in the endo/endo form, the reaction occurs in a fraction of a second. If the catalyst is stuck in another form, the reaction takes days to complete. “When we started on the research, there was the belief that breaking or forming hydrogen was the crucial step,” says Simone Raugei, a PNNL theoretician. “It isn’t. It is putting protons in the right spot on the catalyst.
