shreya- about wilson- about
for @k1tschs at penny park, midday
laying on a blanket in the park, shreya tosses her notebook aside and props herself up on her elbows to look at vada, "divorce is chic, right?" it's something she's been thinking about since her return to town, now as a young, beautiful divorced woman. and vada seems like the right person to talk to about this. despite shreya's flee from the town, her bond with vada has fallen right back into place seamlessly, “i mean, it doesn't make me less hot or anything. maybe it makes me sexier kinda.” not that she's looking to date anyone right now, but when she does, she needs to know how to highlight her strengths.
WITH: @creaturec0mfort + wilson holder. WHERE: shirley's diner, after wil's shift.
“i need you to be honest with me,” is how it starts, and him not evening greeting is slowly becoming a habit for rory — his dads will be cringing at the lack of manners here. “if y'could make your own thing for – the restaurant – ” obviously, rory, “what would it be? you look like you'd mak'a mean smashburger.” which, yum. “last time i tried to cook something that wasn't in the microwave, i think'i burned water on the stove.”
wil looks up as rory speaks, not surprised or bothered by his abrupt segue into conversation. he listens, humming, "well, glad i look like a smashburger pro. that's very important in this biz," he considers the question for a split second before replying, "but i'd go for a pot pie. it would fit the diner vibe, but it's also hearty and homey, y'know?" he's sure logistically it would be far too much work in the kitchen there. but maybe it's worth a suggestion in the future. at the mention of burning water, he snorts, “oh, c'mon, i'm sure you do a little better than that!” he boxes up some leftover fries, grinning, “i could always give you some cooking lessons, if ya wanted. or… i could just always keep your fridge stocked with diner food – family and friends discount, of course.”
the way shreya’s concerns seemed to land solely on his presence in cider point brought him back down to earth, feeling the familiar sidewalk beneath his shoes and the sea air in his sinuses. yes, that was why he had come here all those months ago, wasn’t it? for her. but she hadn’t been here, she’d left - again. ❛ i came here for you, to look for you, ❜ but nico doesn’t dare let the sentence linger, lest it be misunderstood, ❛ but i stayed because you weren’t here. ❜
his words took the breath from her lungs, a familiar ache settling in the middle of her chest. yes, she had been the one who left, but that wasn't something she had expected to face anytime soon, and certainly not standing in the rain outside the store. shreya shifted uncomfortably on her feet, at a very rare loss for words. "i... nico, this is the last thing i expected today..." or maybe ever. she shook her head, swallowing hard – her tongue felt like sandpaper, “where are you staying? what part of town?” she wasn't sure why that is what seems important to know. maybe for avoidance purposes, maybe so she can picture the life he's started to build here in her absence.
"Yes, thank you! I've seen so many cool videos of other people doing it and I have a few days off and I like crafting." Tabby agreed, thrilled that someone seemed to get it, instead of immediately questioning them. Like their parents, ugh. "My ultimate vision would be to do a rainbow gradient, but I don't know if I have the skillset for that. And I do like the color of my car, so I chose these purpley ones. I don't think I'll bedazzle the handles or anything, just because that might be dangerous. Plus the curve of it all my be too pronounced to make the gems lay smooth."
“A rainbow gradient would really hit during pride,” Shreya hummed, “but, trust, it would slay throughout the year too. Just saying… missed opportunity.” She studied the rhinestones for a moment, “But you're probably right. It would be soooo much work. Hours and hours.” Probably too long to be worth it. Shreya ran her fingers over the already stuck rhinestones, “Are you using glue? Or holding onto the hope that the adhesive on the back is strong enough?” Here she was acting like an engineer or something – as if she knew a single thing about cars or glue.

“i need you to draw something on this receipt.” she's already shoving a pen into his free hand, already flapping the receipt in front of his face. summer is already halfway over, and winnie's trying to save as much as possible. “rich couple on four. i'm tying to milk 'em.”
wilson doesn't hesitate to take the pen and paper before he even knows what his assignment is, eyebrows shooting up in interest, “somethin' cute or should i go silly?” he hunches over the counter slightly, looking up at winnie, “does the husband give golfer vibes? i think i got an idea.” he tells her, starting to draw a tiny body on the receipt.
"Cheese on one and sausage on the other." She said eyed the drinks he bought. "Ooh wine, perfect!" She turned as the timer went off for the oven. Dakota cheered slightly as the pizza came out great if not a little oval shaped. "Ok not going to lie, I fully expected to see a cheesy mess coming out of the oven."
“Incredible topping choice. You're a genius.” He grinned as he started to pour them both a little bit of wine. He took a sip, licking his lips, “A little drier than I like, but it'll do.” He set the bottle down, turning his attention to the not so messy food, “Okay! I was afraid I was gonna have to call in an order to Shirley's, this is definitely edible.” He told her with a laugh, “You're gonna put me outta a job if you keep this up.”

skin tightens across his chest and the chime from the harvey's market door rings in his ears. perhaps it was cliche to say time stood still, but he was certain he could spot each individual water droplet of the newly arriving rain, as if suspended in the air between them like glimmering jewels. she looked no different and entirely unknown all at once, a sight so disorientating that the carton of eggs slipped from between his fingers and hit the floor with a sickening crack. only then did he feel partially pulled from his stupor, enough to allow a messy ❛ what the fuck? ❜ to tumble from his lips. she had been approaching him – or, more accurately, where he was stood – and there was little time for either of them to divert. not that he would want to… though shrey likely thought different, he was sure.

shreya wasn't sure if she was hallucinating at first. because this simply could not be real. but it was. and he was. and now they were face-to-face for the first time in too long. the breaking of the eggs, the fall of the rain – none of it could have broken her gaze as she stilled, staring straight at her ex-husband. “what the fuck me?! what the fuck you! you're here! why?!” she tightened her hold on the twelve-pack of diet coke under her arm, swallowing hard. she stumbled forward a step as if to get a better look at him, “oh my god… oh my god!” she suddenly wished she had gone to the damn market in an outfit nicer than pilling bike shorts and an old band t-shirt she'd had since high school – not that nico hadn't seen her in worse, but still, she felt unprepared and underdressed. “this… you're in cider point..." restating the obvious, but it seemed her brain was incapable of forming any other thought.

maybe cleo had been stupid to trust shreya. their stories almost mirror each other, only difference being she and heath weren't quite married yet — and she had been the one left behind at their highest. she had barely survived the fall, but an empty room and another familiar face in a new town had been what she needed at the time. now, after watching her leave twice, it feels bittersweet seeing her around again. "thought it'd be a nice day to write, but I can't get anything on paper." she hums, tapping her pen against her surprisingly quickly half-filled notebook. she never did find her old one.
settling beside cleo, shreya nods, “yeah, i haven't written anything worth a damn in months.” and could that be because she left behind people she loved without thinking about the consequences? she's not going to even consider that right now. her own notebook sits almost empty in her bag beside a few gum wrappers and forgotten lip glosses. she clicks her tongue, eyes meeting cleo's, “it's good to see you, you know?” she doesn't say what she probably should say, which is sorry, but she doesn't know how to navigate the confusing situation they're in now, “i'm back for real this time.” but even shreya knows it may be an empty promise.

there was something oddly comforting about places that still encouraged people to slow down. electric rhythm hadn't changed much since alessia was a teenager spending summers in cider point, ducking inside to escape the afternoon heat while her mother wandered neighboring shops. the walls were still lined with records she'd once pretended to know everything about, the turntable behind the counter still filling the room with music that somehow made silence feel less empty. she traced absentminded fingers along a row of worn vinyl sleeves before pulling one free, tilting it toward the light. whether she actually intended to buy it was another question entirely, she had always been better at collecting moments than possessions. a familiar melody drifted through the speakers, earning the faintest smile as she glanced toward the employee. "you know," she mused, turning the record over in her hands, "every town has one place that somehow survives every trend, every renovation, every attempt to modernize it." her gaze wandered around the shop before settling on whoever happened to be nearby. “i think this is ours.” she paused for a beat, studying the album in her hands. "now tell me..." she held it up with an amused tilt of her head. "am i about to discover a masterpiece i've somehow overlooked, or are we all just romantically attached to vinyl because it makes us feel more interesting than we actually are?"
inspiration. that was the reason shreya had told herself she was going to sift through vinyls. she'd hit a wall recently when it came to writing, she needed to do something about it. the other reason, one she wouldn't admit, is that the unchanging nature brought her comfort. it was one place in town that, as alessia had said, wasn't modernized. it reminded her of being a teenage, getting her record player from her brother for her sixteenth birthday. it brought a sense of comfort, of home. it was a relief in a life that was ever-changing. she hummed, “well, i am actually interesting, my vinyl selection provides the proof of that not the fact that i like vinyl," she insisted, glancing over at what alessia had in her hands, “but as far as an overlooked masterpiece goes… do you have a high bar for 'masterpiece?'” she did. part of her writer's block problem. “you might be setting yourself up for disappointment if you're looking for a masterpiece."

she's somehow made her way back into the forbidden space of the kitchen, having sweet-talked a path into it via party gossip and promises of stolen redbulls from grand royale – hitches herself up onto a nearby counter, legs kicking absent-mindedly as she addressed wil with a grin. ❛ and where were you last night? ❜ she queries, of course referring to one of their many barely-planned nights out. ❛ i had to entertain myself, and you know that never ends well. ❜
shirley's diner kitchen / any time
wil glances over from where he's refilling ketchup bottles, a crooked grin on his face as he deadpans, “so great to see you too, tommy, always a pleasure.” then he shrugs, waving it off as nothing, “i just had to go by my dad's place to help out with somethin', took longer than expected. sorry, shoulda texted you." he sets the final filled bottle on a tray and leans against the counter, “how'd ya entertain yourself? something illegal? horrible movie on netflix? summoning an ancient entity with dark magic?” he jokes.

"Hey, could you please pass that plastic box over? Don't kick it, just hand it to me. It has rhinestones in it." Tabby said, stomach down on the pavement. They had parked their car in a shady spot near no other cars to start their project. Hopefully the forecast was right and it wouldn't rain this week. They had been bedazzling their car for at least a day now and while they didn't want to do the whole sedan, doing the wheels and window outlines had taken more time than they thought. "Do you think I should just bite the bullet and bedazzle the whole thing?"
Shreya grabbed the box, walking over to Tabby and crouching beside them as she handed over the rhinestone box, “I mean, if it was my car, I'd do full rhinestone, but that's just me.” She grinned, looking at the already completed work, “What's your vision? What do you see for the car? Let the car speak to you.” Shreya didn't own a car. Not yet, anyway. But she had a bookmark on a set of those car headlight eyelashes for when she did make the purchase. She thought it'd be a pretty good bit.

Dakota smiled as she opened the door for Wilson. "Hey just in time. The pizza is almost done." She smiled as she headed back toward the kitchen to check on the food in the oven. Dakota had started up reality TV Sundays about a year ago after discovering a love for Hell's Kitchen. Honestly that show had everything, drama for her and cooking for Wilson. " You'll be proud. I actually tried my hand out at stuffed crust today." Dakota wasn't the best in the kitchen but she did make a really good pizza thanks to her one dad being obsessed with his pizza oven for an entire summer.
“What toppings did ya go with?” Wil asked as he slipped inside, toeing off his shoes and shrugging his tote bag off of his shoulders, “I brought drinks.” And by drinks, he meant incredibly cheap, twist-off cap wine. The best kind. “Stuffed crust? Damn! And did it turn out or… if there about to be cheese everywhere?” He teased as he slipped into the kitchen to find some glasses for the wine, “I'm interested to see what you've got cookin', Top Chef.”
