i hate how the fandom for the black phone (1 and 2) is dying out. like why canโt this fandom stay alive, even after the movies were done? there are a lot of fandoms not dead yet tbp fandom isnโt? ๐ญ
because the sequel sucked tbh
My kingdom for a Black Phone sequel that actually focuses on Finney's trauma and recovery
itโs been a year since two years too late was posted!! iโm so proud of its growth and all the love me and my bestie ( @creepythingsfrom ) have received on it! thank yall so so much!! ๐ซถ๐ป

posting this on here bc idk if itโll blow up on tik tok :((
go show some love to this edit on my tik tok page @ lexiedits1031
While I liked the way this scene was shot, it also bothered me because it just felt like another half-baked way to force a targeted connection between two characters (by revealing that the Grabber killed Hope) that didn't need to be there in a way that seemed far too convenient while feeling forced and inorganic.
Likewise, I feel like if they were going to have a one-on-one flashback scene in the Grabber's van at all, it should have been with Finney for obvious reasons.
I'm also not sure why the Grabber would give a shit about doing Gwen "a kindness" after everything else's he's demonstrated in terms of vengeance and violence in both films.
A potential flashback scene in the van could have been used for something substantial, but overall, it came across like another attempt at forced let's-spell-it-out-for-you exposition for another hamfisted plot twist.
That scene gave me the biggest dose of cringe.
I just saw someone say that thinking gwen shouldn't have been the focal point of tbp2 is misogynistic, AND IM GOING TO LOSE MY MIND.
FORGIVE ME IF I WOULD RATHER FOCUS ON THE KID WHO GOT LOCKED IN A BASEMENT, WHO HAD TO KILL HIS KIDNAPPER, WHO HAD TO WATCH SOMEONE TAKE AN AXE TO THE HEAD, WHO WAS MOST DEFINITELY SA'D, WHO LOST HIS ONLY FRIEND, WHO ALSO HAD TO DEAL WITH THE AFTERMATH TRAUMA OF ALL OF THAT, AND ON TOP OF IT ALL WHO HAD TO WATCH HIS SISTER BE ALL LOVEY DOVEY WITH HIS DEAD BEST FRIENDS BROTHER.
but NOOOOO it's DEFINITELY 100% misogyny. Nothing else ๐ซฉ
I didnโt like the fact that the sequel focuses so much on Gwen either, and when I saw people posting stuff like โif you donโt like it, youโre just a misogynist,โ I honestly laughed out loud. Like, come on. Iโm literally a feminist, and Gwen has been one of my favorite characters since the first movie.
The thing is, itโs not about hating her; itโs about how the shift of focus onto her feels so forced and unnatural. It doesnโt really fit the story or the tone that made the original so powerful. Some people seem unwilling, or maybe just unable โ to look deeper and see that giving Gwen the spotlight wasnโt necessarily the best direction for the sequel, especially when you consider the world-building and the lore the first film established.
idk if itโll blow up on tik tok so iโm sharing it here! ๐ซถ๐ป
Bestie, your edits never miss!! ๐ฅ

My favourite hero vs villain dynamic in horror! Still a crime there wasn't more scenes between these two phenomenal actors in the sequel!
Totally!! Their dynamic was so dark and intense โ perfect for a horror movie.

It doesnโt bother me that Gwenโs psychic powers are the driving force of the plot and what gets them to Alpine Lake rather than Finneyโs, it does bother me a lot she got the call at the end. Getting calls is Finneyโs thing, dreams are hers - and more importantly heโs the one with Survivorโs Guilt who needed the reassurance that he did help the other victims. Gwen getting that message is so much less impactful. We couldโve had a scene or moment of closure about Gwenโs mom and dreams, but the final scene is the emotional end-note of the film and Finney shouldโve gotten that. He already didnโt get enough scenes in the movie and had his trauma sidelined by Gwen, the ending shouldโve at least been his closure. Gwen has her own trauma and that couldโve gotten some attention, I donโt agree with people who are acting like she has no trauma or right to be upset. But Finney was the one in the basement, he is the victim, and at points the movie almost seems to treat The Grabber as Gwenโs abuser instead of Finneyโs. She gets all these big moments but even Finneyโs scene of crying and telling his family how traumatized he is has little payoff. It feels disappointing how the movie didnโt seem willing to actually dive into Finneyโs trauma and went for a โsaferโ, more generic Freddy Kruger-type horror movie.
Ok last bit of Black Phone 2 disappointment posting
Having Finn and Gwen's mom killed by Shaw? Cheap and borderline disrespectful.
See guys? It's okay! She wasn't actually crazy or suicidal.
I doubt that was the intended message but...
They were trying so hard to establish that โshockingโ link between the Grabber and the Blake family that they got carried away and didnโt realize how lame it looked.

โ๐ฆe are taught as actors to always hunt for the dark side of a hero or the good side of a villain. But here, there was no โgoodโ side. Itโs a broken mind. A diseased animal.โ -Ethan Hawke on playing The Grabber (X)
