I have to interrupt my usual aesthetic posting because I just stumbled across this comic I did in college that is killingggg meeeee
girls in despair compilation
my OCs, the depressed loser and the haughty bitch. wanted to draw a moment where they're both happy but maybe not ready to admit it to themselves.
pattie boyd the luckiest girl alive. listening to her memoir, wonderful tonight, I kept thinking she led some kind of charmed life to put her in the path of glamor and modeling and rock stars and a pretty respected photography career. obviously it wasn't that simple and eric clapton was a piece of shit...but she became an icon and a muse by way of some kind of natural magnetism and one thing casually leading to another. would that we all could happen to find ourselves cozied up with a beatle or two.
the more I get back into drawing the more I shake awake parts of my inner childhood self. suddenly I can't stop drawing catgirls
The Ryoko Kui/Delicious in Dungeon exhibition in LA was cool!
I will admit the gallery was stiflingly hot and that caused us to speed through this faster than I'd usually like to. Wish I had more photos. But overall it was a thoughtfully curated exhibit! I really enjoyed seeing a lot of her early work I hadn't seen before on display (above). They also included a lot of thumbnail sketches next to her illustrations which is something I don't see often and makes it a little more fun to engage with digital artwork that has been printed out. Maybe this is going to sound anti-digital artist (I hope not) but it's infinitely more fun to look at traditional work in person...the thought occurred to me that this exhibit could theoretically be happening in multiple places at once, and it instantly made it feel less special. But small touches like the thumbnails + her commentary on why one sketch was chosen went a long way.
Then of course there was the Delicious in Dungeon section which had the food replicas I'd seen people posting online. Always fills my heart with joy to see Japanese fake food and these were just as weird and wonderful as I'd hoped. Such a shame there was no themed cafe to accompany the exhibit.
Finally was the gift shop, which we decided to skip as the heat was driving us insane, but the posted list of items was definitely impressive if you're a big fan. I especially liked that they were selling art board replicas of actual pages from the manga. I would kill for merch like that from my favorite mangakas!
Some lovely finds at the LA Central Library. Their teen section has the most overwhelmingly large collection of manga I've ever seen at a library, with sooo many fun gems new and old.
- I was really excited to find this Riyoko Ikeda book, I didn't even know this was in print. I will admit that I like looking at 70s shojo art more than I like reading it, but overall I feel like this is an important one to read for my ✨️education✨️
- Honestly don't know why I checked out this Boys Over Flowers book because I already reread it semi-recently. I was just so amazed it was on the shelves because you cannot find this series anywhere! They even had DVDs of the famous Kdrama version which I find hilarious.
- Elyse checked out the first two volumes of this series about a convenience store in limbo between life and death and I had to snap a pic. I'm really obsessed with this cat creature.
- Panpanya!! I couldn't believe they had this! My friend brought a book by them to our book club recently and I absolutely loved how eerie in a very dreamlike way it was. Panpanya is a completely anonymous mangaka (they/them pronouns for anonymity and possibly queerness as well) who draws themself in a very simplified chibi style in a dark, hyper detailed Japan full of strange contraptions and entities. Their other book I read, An Invitation From a Crab, reads like a dream journal, a lot of small disconnected observations that don't fully make sense. I have a feeling this book will be just like that.
I don't really have time nor the space on my towering pile on my bedside table but nonetheless super excited to read all of these!

Related: this rabbit hole sent me down another rabbit hole about this doujinshi collective called The Vampire Club. Looking for any and all information about them if anyone sees this. I was able to find scans of one of their doujins on a random NSFW site but not much info. Would love to know what their deal was and find these covers in hi-res. Why are they even called vampire club??
