I loveeeee how your art, especially how you incorporate traditional clothing into your designs. Can I ask where you usually find references for the clothing you draw and are there any sources you'd reccomend for someone interested in learning more about traditional clothing and textiles? Thank youuu!!
Hey! uhm.. i hope its okay to link some of my previous ask with similar question i replyed to in the past.
Link, link, link, link <-this one comes with a wonderful addition
my method didn't change and its not like there are specific link or sources that always include everything. not that it is what you ask anon. but a lot what i do is like... fact matching and checking. or watch tutorials on youtube by typing ing "how to get dressed as a buddhist monk in indonesia" and watch the video.
the steps are like: 1. wikipedia for base knowledge 2. find a museum who exihbits the item of clothing i am interested in or find a travel blog/forum/guide that shares the cluture. when it comes to indiginous people they do have their own websites more often (but some of my previous link's are now offline sorry. and tbh i never safe links i just... type in the search bar what i want and it spits out museums archives or travel blog information and such) 3. never underestimate the wast knowledge within reddit post when it comes to armor discussion. (please go the extra mailt o fact check just to be safe) 4. there are people on youtube that dedicate their freetime in educating and sharing their culture with the world link, link, link, link,
i want to emphasize... its not jut the item of clothing. but its the whole enviorment and history around it that should be looked at. because it all connects. which can make research sometimes a bit extensive. but its fun to me!
when it comes to atla characters redesign. good starting point is and will always remain @atlaculture. i owe them like... theoretically.... nearly everything i make so big thanks to them and all the time and effort they put in their blog!
hope this can help

The Love Triangle in LOK Was A Contradiction of Mako's Characterization
To all the Mako haters: Yes, I like Mako. Yes, I ship Makorra, at least in terms of both the 1st season and how it could have been written as a whole. I'm also not defending that Mako, in effect, did cheat on Asami. I may dislike Asami, but I will acknowledge that what Mako did was wrong.
But that brings me to my point. Because sure, a love triangle adds all this dramatic potential and such, especially since LOK was like the last time outside of Wolf King (please check it out, it's wonderful!) to do the original "two girls fighting for a guy" love triangle.
However, as the love triangle stands in LOK, there is one glaring problem.
Mako's main, overarching and core trait is his loyalty.
Mako is established to be intensely loyal to Bolin. Yes, he's his baby brother and needs to be protected, but Mako could've easily left him behind at any point before they became pro-benders. The fact that he didn't shows how much he cares for Bolin, and how he'll stay by his brother's side no matter what.
This loyalty is then extended to Korra in the third episode. Despite their quasi bonding moment in episode two, their bond only really solidifies in 3 when they go looking for Bolin. Korra's willingness to help him in spite of her cushy upbringing is what Mako respects and admires about her, and it's clear (both by his protective actions and the way they awkwardly dive away from each other upon waking up in the park - side note, in that time period, such a scene would have been seen as borderline scandalous) that Korra has earned Mako's respect and loyalty by the end.
So him suddenly swooning over Asami in episode 4 and having her back on everything....really stands against that, especially since Mako should be wondering why she's throwing money at him so readily. What makes it worse is that, if you "justify it" as Mako desperate for money, then that either makes him a gold digger (which he is not, as evidenced by how he doesn't even push Korra for money from the White Lotus, the Airbenders, or whomever else) or a leech. Mako is far from both, as he's shown to work hard to get himself and Bolin the money to keep their bellies full and the roof over their head, and there's no real benefit from hanging around the Avatar beyond star power in the ring that he clearly isn't interested in.
All of this is to say that the love triangle was not even well thought out, as the execution was just that - an execution.
If you hate Mako, that's fine. If you don't like Makorra, that's fine.
I just wanted to spell out why the love triangle didn't work, and how it actually broke Mako's established characterization in favor of drama.
So please, don't do what Book 1 did with a potential love triangle, and if you want to hate Mako, I hope I at least gave you something to think about for one aspect of him to not hate.
See you later, folks!
“She isn’t jealous because of other girls she’s just mad he’s the center of attention”
Me when I’m jealous someone else is the center of attention:
“That’s exactly what happened in canon”
I would love to see canonical proof of this! Oh wait, it doesn’t exist lmao.
“Katara was left just as the Avatar’s wife”
Not a single point is Katara ever referred to as the “avatar’s wife” in TLoK but go off.
“And a healer, without a statue or the world’s acknowledgment”
She is literally revered as the greatest waterbender and healer in the world. She is a member of the white lotus. She trained the next avatar in her 70’s. She rebuilt the SWT. She was a politician. Not only is Katara by word of mouth said to have done more and shown to have done more than any of the other gang members, but also, you do realize that The Legend of Korra is not about Katara, right?
She was never shown to have a statue because she, unlike the other members, was originally IN TLOK and relevant to the plot even if in a more minor way. The creative team behind Korra were not able to plot out a 4 season narrative like they did with ATLA, because the network jerked them around season by season. They originally planned to have 1 season only. Katara is very much alive and in season 1, and appears multiple times, hence why she didn’t have a statue shown. This only became complicated when Zuko and Toph randomly appeared in later seasons. Seasons that were not planned or thought out when s1 was created… lol. Could they have randomly shown a statue of Katara in season 4? I mean, sure I guess. Would it have been in any way relevant to what was going on? No!
“In the end she became just a forgotten lonely old woman”
The world literally does remember her and is shown to but go off queen! She is like 84 goddamn years old in TLoK. What do these people expect? For her to do crazy backflips and stab a man on screen or something? She lives in her damn tribe, with her daughter and is visited by her sons and grandchildren often. Lonely? Maybe, probably because the love of her life and husband is fucking dead and so is her brother. Because of how she’s viewed by the world? Not so much.
People have got to stop acting like TLoK is about Katara, or any of the other original characters. Like jfc, not every damn thing is about her and not every writing choice was maliciously made to slight her character either 😭🙏🏻
Katara has many regrets in life but giving her boy the Jinshi Haircut is not one of them.

the (weirdly) popular notion that diaspro’s some poor misunderstood victim and sky’s the big bad villain is so tiring
i keep seeing so many comments on tiktok talking about how ‘oh, all this time we were hating diaspro while the real villain was sky!’ … 💀 are we deadass?
saw another one about how ‘diaspro being evil is bloom and sky’s fault’… brother. brother.
if you wanted someone to blame, blame it on her parents. they were the ones who raised her to be that way. they were the ones who failed her
but ok let’s talk about 1x17 a little. first of all we can very clearly see that diaspro was a bitch before anything even happened. bloom accidentally bumped into her and she started insulting her, calling her a “stupid clumsy girl” and a “peasant”. immediately insulting and belittling those who she perceive as lesser than her
bloom and sky certainly had nothing to do with her being the way she is. why are we blaming her actions on someone else?
now, could bloom have handled the situation better? yes, but she’s also a 16 year old who was constantly getting harassed by the trix and was at her limit. every time something bad happened they were the cause of it. excuse her for thinking this girl, who was acting a lot like one of the trix would act, was one of them.
and the one who most people blame for the situation - sky. could he have also handled the situation better? yup. he absolutely should’ve told bloom. but again. 16 year old. who was under a lot of pressure and was literally planning to tell her. though aside from that, he is not wrong for developing feelings for bloom and wanting to pursue her. he wasn’t ‘cheating’ on diaspro. him and diaspro weren’t in an actual romantic relationship. it was a business arrangement trying to disguise itself as a relationship. a fucking arranged marriage. he’s 100% justified for not wanting to be with diaspro. diaspro doesn’t own him, and he doesn’t owe her anything.
now in s1, diaspro wasn’t THAT much of a villain. she was just mean. and s2 she’s not really either (i mean we see her for one episode). and yeah, i could see myself feeling bad for her. in fact there’s moments where i do want to feel bad for her (but then i remember everything else and i’m like “yeahhhh. nevermind.” lol). her whole life she was groomed to essentially be sky’s wife. which is genuinely disgusting. and is absolutely horrible on her parents’ part. and yeah i would understand being upset when the engagement falls through. but again, the people who should be getting called out are her and sky’s parents, or the system as a whole. sky is not a villain in her story. he’s just a guy who didn’t wanna spend his life with someone he didn’t like and just wanted to be with the person he loved. and i don’t see how that would make him a bad person. he was never necessarily mean to her and the fact he was even SLIGHTLY okay with her post s3 is a miracle because i could NEVER.
so yeah, s3 and beyond i truly have no sympathy for her. in s3 she drugs sky and forces him to be with her against his will, s5 and on she keeps trying to homewreck him and bloom’s relationship and she basically attempts to kill bloom in s6…. even if sky and bloom were meaner to her in earlier seasons there is nothing that justifies this behavior.
so no. diaspro isn’t some misunderstood villain. you can like her and acknowledge the fact she’s not a good person, or say “in my mind, she got redeemed in s2” and stuff like that. but claiming that diaspro, in the show’s full canon, is anything but a villain is plain bullshit
diaspro is a victim of internalized misogyny and was 100% failed by her parents and the system as a whole. but she is in no way a victim in the sky/bloom situation. they have done NOTHING to her.

Some reference pictures of traditional arctic coats by region, for people who struggle with designing Water Tribe clothing (like myself). These are all female parkas.

Collage 2: Canada
Collage 3: Greenland
Collage 4: Various regions
The last collage is of beaded amauti (baby-carrying parkas), which are typically worn during special occasions due to how elaborate they are. In some areas, they’re given as wedding gifts.
